There are more and more people getting diagnosed with the virus now and this is to be expected since things have slowly been getting back to normal or do we know that more people have the virus now because more tests are being done?

Looks like it probably will be and last time we learned that we did it too late. Use what we know and have learned.

Patchwork partial measures aren't cutting it, so the full deal is probably needed.

Who knows?

What I do know is that lots of people won't adhere to it if we do. From what I've seen many can't stick to hands, face, space, especially space. It's unlikely they'll stick to tighter regulations.

I'm increasingly of the thinking that the only way forward is to restart shielding.

This would affect our lives greatly but I don't see a way out this other than herd immunity, having said that if that happens the rest of society have a duty to stick to the rules so that people like me dont have to make that sacrifice for any longer than necessary.

"Simple answer - no.

Lockdowns don't solve the problem."

A PROPPER lockdown most certainly would solve the problem, but it would need to be literally "nobody leaves their house for a month", which is obviously unworkable.

If you look at the infection figures, the graph shows how the number of new infections dropped massively a few days after the lockdown started. It would have been even more effective if the borders had been completely closed.

Unfortunately, we will always need that collection of "key workers" to keep the country running, and as long as those people are moving around, there are holes in any "lockdown".

Lockdown was never about "solving the problem" and would never stop a virus totally.

It's designed to keep infection rates at a level the health services can cope with while we work towards herd immunity. The idea of lockdown is to save lives by flattening the rate of infection and ensure the NHS are not overwhelmed.

The last pandemic was the Spanish Flu in 1918, which took four waves and over two years to finally work through enough of society to burn itself out. We haven't learned from that pandemic and are making a lot of the same mistakes, including not taking lockdown seriously.

A true lockdown would be nobody leaving their house or country for two weeks and the virus should disapeer as it wouldn't be able to live without a host.

As soon as a select few people in our case key workers go outside that's it, it cannot work. The only option is to have carnage for two weeks and everyone stay at home which people would refuse to do anyway or herd immunity and just accept that it's now part of life and get on with it.

I personally think we should ditch the masks and distancing and just get on with life as normal and whatever happens happens.

" I personally think we should ditch the masks and distancing and just get on with life as normal and whatever happens happens."

As someone who is shielding, I'd prefer it if you accepted a few minor inconveniences to help reduce the spread, which will help save the lives of vulnerable people.

It's similar to the idea of 'don't drink and drive,' a minor inconvenience to your fun to reduce the risk you pose to others.

If it's really as bad and infectious as the media says (which it is not) then you will get it shielding or not? There's risks everyday people have to take, I could fall over and die shall I just stay in bed all day?

The longer it takes to catch it, the more medical knowledge and experience there will be.

Yes, there is a lot of value in lockdown, taking basic precautions and slowing the rates of infections for everyone.

It's not about removing risk, it's about reducing it.

And yes, everything is a risk. But you still put on a seat belt when driving. Lockdown, social distancing, and all these rules are about reducing the rates of infection and protecting others.

So, for those who do try to stick to the rules - thank you! It does matter.

Those who are shielding are classed as very high risk if I'm correct? Now if your very high risk in terms of covid then your very high risk in terms of other similar viruses and diseases which go around all year every year? So being on a swinging site kind of spoils your argument?

If I was that high risk I wouldn't be meeting anyone I didn't know for sex whether covid was a thing or not.

Not having a go just my perspective

How long is this new lockdown going to last. All a lockdown does is push it back. We aren't even in October yet. A lockdown now of two weeks means you are going to lift it in the height of autumn with winter still to come.

As Carl Heneghan suggested to the commons select committee on Thursday. A better way would be to reduce the cycles of the PCR test so you are only picking up those who are infected and infectious and concentrate on isolating those and their close contacts, instead of the current test that is picking up people who were infected up to three months ago and are no longer infectious.

If we'd scaled up testing and tracing capacity, paying people who were notified to quarantine, we'd have limited the issue of infection increases to a great extent. As soon as world beating or a collection of businesses with no or very limited relevant experience, take over some of the NHS work, typically without tendering, it goes wrong.

The worst government move for public trust and confidence was not sacking Cummings. They should now make this a cross-party management job, with devolved nations fully involved, to restore some public faith. Johnson hasn't spoken with Sturgeon etc for months, to any relevant extent. This shouldn't be about politics but they are making it so. I'd prefer to see the leaders say what they have all worked on and agreed to.

If we don't rebuild public trust, it's going to be harder, worse and more costly in every sense.

We know the level of success from the various lockdown type measures we've had - the original and the regional. We also understand the costs of delaying lockdown when infections are rising. I'm very inclined to think we should lockdown as before quickly, potentially lowering the requirements for test volumes as people interact less, as experience is showing that autumn and winter is going to be much worse, with our current lifestyles.

Exactly this. If I thought a lockdown would eradicate the virus I would be all for it, but it won't, so the lockdowns are pointless. All you're doing is kicking the can down the road and racking up a whole lot of other problems in the process.

Agreed, it'll just pause things for how ever long the lockdown is on for. Like it did last time.

Have localised lockdowns in areas where the rate of infections is high.

To be honest a lockdown will make absolutely no difference to my life so whatever is decided, my life will continue as it always has.

We don't want it too soon either. It is possible a mutation to a less severe infection, hence advisable to watch hospital admissions. Hopefully still a decent lag between hospital admission and icu admission. Giving the powers that be time to monitor, NOT just case numbers.

Hoping for a less severe disease is not scientific, but we do have treatments that work (for some).

I know watching and waiting for the appropriate time, but my worry would be in the govt is competent WHEN to make the RIGHT call.

The first lockdown was very successful, the virus was highly prevalent across the country and had been growing exponentially since Dec/Jan in the country. The lockdown did a fantastic job of suppressing the transmission of the virus.

Sadly, all it did was kick the can down the road, the virus was always going to come back eventually, it’s what viruses do.

Herd immunity or a vaccination are the only two options to get us out of this mess, neither are coming any time soon.

Lockdown 2.0 is inevitable sadly.

Absolutely right

Most hospitals are functioning normally and have a plan in place for if/when it all kicks off again. Then there are the nightingale hospitals to fall back on.

Lockdown 2.0 is bollocks, but when we’ve got this clown show running the country, god help us, it’s coming.9

4000 cases per day now is not compatible with 4000 cases per day back in April when we were only testing in primary care settings.

Hospitals were empty up and down the country with the exception of some in London during the first lockdown. The nightingale hospitals were also empty for the most part. I'd like to know how many people die as a result of not getting checked out by their GPs as the drop in cancer and other urgent referrals is alarming. I bet the knock on effect of poor economy and the referrals will kill more anyway.

Spot on and exactly what I've been saying all along.

I don’t think we will go back into lock down. All the media are talking about how many people have got coronavirus, but we didn’t know how many people had it to start off with, so we have no idea if the number is going up or down.

"People assumed that the 1st lock down would kill off the virus, all it did was delay it. "

People who didn't listen to science might have.

Scientists knew it was a measure to reduce the spread to a point where it was manageable, and to protect the most vulnerable.

" I personally think we should ditch the masks and distancing and just get on with life as normal and whatever happens happens.

As someone who is shielding, I'd prefer it if you accepted a few minor inconveniences to help reduce the spread, which will help save the lives of vulnerable people.

...

Not having a go just my perspective "

I'd prefer it if you didn't make widely inaccurate assumptions about my situation, thanks.

Covid has been particularly dangerous for people with certain issues. That doesn't automatically read across to other viruses or diseases.

And shielding means someone in your household is at higher risk of complications should they catch it.

But even then, me chatting on forums on a swinging site does not spoil my argument.

I've made it clear on my profile I'm not doing any meets at present and only here for the forums.

Please don't use someone's personal circumstances to try to justify poor behaviours during the pandemic.

The virus will never go away as long as there's people spreading it only way to irradicate it is to lock everyone in their homes including key workers and this won't happen

To get a large enough herd immunity we need to contract it sadly its not the best idea especially for the vulnerable

Lock downs only postpone the inevitable as soon as there relaxed rates will rise

At the height of the virus the hospitals were only at 42% capacity that had been allocated

It was inevitable a rise in cases was gonna happen as soon as more testing became available even though many positive cases show no or very mild symptoms

Really don't know what answer is but economy and the lower paid can't keep being bashed

Absolutely not.

In the months of August there were more deaths from suicide than Covid. The country needs to get back to normality and let the virus run its course.

That depends on your definition of 'life', and something scientist have been arguing about for a long time.

Either way, it's use here 'is' valid in the English language as one definition is to "put and end to something".

Such as "kill the engine"

Our mental health services can't afford another lock down. They were already stretched before covid. Now, it's even worse. Another lockdown and all the associated issues that brings will likely cause more deaths both now and in the future than covid will as we continue to pick up the pieces for years to come

"The health service isn't even closed to stretched unless there's evidence it will be we shouldn't be even thinking about another lockdown that will have huge financial implications, we need the money to pay for the health service and many many other benefits we all enjoy and the vulnerable absolutely depend on.

But it will if we cant slow the spread.

Every winter the NHS is in crisis, its not going to take too much covid to tip it over the edge. Then more and more people will start losing people they love.

That is when people will start taking this seriously, when it starts killing the people they love.

Which country was this?

There are very few that don't have restrictions or mandatory face coverings.

The difference is their citizens get in with it rather than kicking up a fuss.

Professor Woolhouse from Edinburgh University is a member of the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group and advises the government.

He recently said that Trying to control Covid-19 through a lockdown as a monumental mistake. Look it up if you don't believe me.

90 doctors and scientists in Israel, including a Nobel prize winner, recently concluded 'A closure is thus a strategic mistake, based on a lack of basic understanding of the mechanisms of a pandemic'.

A letter signed by 394 medical doctors and 1343 health professionals in Belgium has just been sent to the Belgium Government where they argue that there is no medical justification for any further Covid restrictions – the medical evidence just doesn’t support them.

As I keep repeating these types of measures do nothing other than alter the rate of transmission (and trash the economy). Seems the medical profession is now coming out to say this as well.

We can’t go back into full lockdown the original one was for everybody to isolate to stop the spread of covi, unfortunately people did still keep meeting up in certain parts of brum for example you would not think there was lockdown, if people thought mass gatherings was a bad idea thy should of stayed home, ideally we should close out boarders request all U.K. nationals return home in 5 working days after that no entry we are an island and only allow essential trade, after all we are an island a green island so get these farmers using there fields utilise local industry to make things .... if we keep not touching our mouths washing our hands wiping door handles light switches your steering wheel your phone and other things we touch on a regular basis then we should beat this it’s basic hygene wipe surfaces touched on regular basis inc your phone screen.... wash hands and don’t touch your mouth.....

"

London nightingale was dismantled, no?

Testing in primary care is obviously not what you think. Testing was hospital admissions, ie acute trusts. Primary care is GP, for example.

"Absolutely not.

In the months of August there were more deaths from suicide than Covid. The country needs to get back to normality and let the virus run its course.

And whats your source for this and where is evidence this is a result of covid?

I didn't say it was a result of Covid. Please re-read.

I have already pointed this out

"You could Lockdown for a year but Covid will still be there , need to make sure those that are most at risk are looked after "
exactly look after the vulnerable and let the majority get on with life. This government is a joke. Lancashire due to go into lockdown on tuesday all except Blackpool. What's, that all about. Oh yes, it's the illuminations I forgot . We, must have those. That's far more important than any covid.

Another point we would like to make is the country couldn't financially cope with another lockdown. Businesses are really struggling. So many people are going to be facing redundancies.

The government can't afford to extend furlough or pay more out in SEISS.

" I personally think we should ditch the masks and distancing and just get on with life as normal and whatever happens happens.

As someone who is shielding, I'd prefer it if you accepted a few minor inconveniences to help reduce the spread, which will help save the lives of vulnerable people.

Can you prove that the virus is not as infectious as the media claim it to be??

I’ve got it sussed

If you get symptoms, keep your mouth shut, tell nobody, don’t get tested, have a few days off to recover and carry on as normal.

Don’t wear masks

Wear masks

Asymptomatic are spreading it

Asymptomstic aren’t spreading it

Stay home

Eat out

Who knows what’s next

Just got back from abroad no social distancing, just face masks in certain places - one of lowest rates in Europe.... Stop believing the media

As long as there are people around that think this virus is not serious; is a government ploy to break the country; is part of a Chinese conspiracy, or any other excuse they come up with NOTHING and that includes lockdown will work !

The only thing that will stop the virus spreading and therefor eventually die out is no person to person contact between people who have it and people that do not.

There are way too many people who have no concept of this for anything to be affective.

Yes I am biased, I have lost two good friends to this thing, and yesterday a relative was admitted to hospital with it, we believe contracted from a work colleague in his 20s who has it after being on the town in Leeds all weekend !

so stay safe people, you cant protect the fools .... just protect yourselves IF YOU CAN. (or do what they say, and catch it and hope the fools are right and teh science is wrong) !

There are probably more people with COVID but they can't get a test as the testing system is a shambles! Plus the kids have gone back to school and picked up the usual back to school cold that happens every year but parents are told the kids need a negative COVID test before they are allowed back to school (teachers too)

I'm not to worried about myself catching it but for people at risk it is a worry. I just don't want another lockdown though because its not good for people's mental health and I can't afford to do it again. Maybe it would be best if older and people at risk isolated and the rest of us got on with it.

This is where i have an issue.

So if people want the old and at risk to put our lives on hold so they can just get on with theirs how is that fair. You are asking people to sacrifice their work and social life so that you can have one.

If everyone stuck to the rules we could all have some kind of life. And what about there mental health?

The reality is until the government put enough money in place for everyone to still pay their bills etc, people will be forced to choose if they isolate or not.

The reality is they don't have the money to do that and people are loosing their jobs.

The protection of vulnerable people or relieving pressure put on the NHS is not something anyone can argue against, however people have to risk assess their own circumstances too

Well it's either that or we all sacrifice our work and social life and nobody can have one as you said. No matter how much people stick to the rules the virus will still be around and probably forever.. and as for mental health that's terrible but do we all have to suffer the same?

No because people aren't sticking to rules.

If society wants the most vulnerable to make massive sacrifices for them them the least they can do is stick to the rules.

"I'm not to worried about myself catching it but for people at risk it is a worry.

Well it's either that or we all sacrifice our work and social life and nobody can have one as you said. No matter how much people stick to the rules the virus will still be around and probably forever.. and as for mental health that's terrible but do we all have to suffer the same?

But you want the most vulnerable in society to make the biggest sacrifice?

So why should I sacrifice my job and mental health so you can have yours?

I think you will find that in countries where people have stuck to the rules things are much better.

Italy for example.

Why do you think people who are not at risk should have to sacrifice their jobs and mental health for other people who are at high risk?

And why should those of us who through no fault of own who also have jobs, families and futures just be shut away?

What I'm saying is there is a middle ground and that is that everyone follows the rules.

It's isn't working though is it

No because people aren't sticking to rules.

No! Only if the rest do everything they can to limit the spread, if they don't then they only have themselves to blame and the country should go back into lockdown.

Central

If the only way to reduce the le it's vels enough, the quicker lockdown starts, the shorter it will need to be.

Our levels and hospital capacities are nothing like in late March, so we'd not had to lockdown for anything like that duration.

But surely when we come out of lockdown again we are going to be back in the same situation sooner or later?

"People assumed that the 1st lock down would kill off the virus, all it did was delay it. "

That was never the point, it was always going to return, you can slow the spread, viruses need vessel's for moving ie us, less contact less spread, but with or without a vaccine it'll probably always have an asymptomatic reservoir in humans.

As someone working on an ICU In Manchester I’ll just remind you that lockdown was to enable units like mine to be able to operate under the pressure that this virus absolutely does deliver to the care system.

We are currently seeing more people through the doors, we are also heading towards the point of the year where we are near capacity regardless of covid.

If another lockdown is announced it will be again to allow us the breathing room to ensure that those fighting for their lives can get the care they need... simple as that.

It’s not really a choice if it needs to happen unless we are suggesting it would be better to allow people to die in the streets whilst seeking care.

Nobody wants a second lock down, including the Government. Local lock downs of 2 weeks would be the way forward. It would curb infection rates, and give the NHS breathing space.

People keep going on about lock down the UK has never been in lock down we only partially lock down

Factories Construction sites and other places remained open people who couldn't work from home had to go into work

We were all allowed out to supermarkets and for exercise so everyone had a part in spreading it because we never locked the country down we only put in small restrictions

So just because the public is more ready to accept more deaths we should give up on trying to control it?

We shouldn't need to lock down

Unfortunately too many thick cnuts in the country can't understand the simple concept of wash your fkn hands and don't beath and sneeze over people.

We live in a place where people complain because they got a speeding tickets when they were only 5mph over the limit. Says it all really.
