Over 300,000 volunteers tested across England between 24 July and 7 September, as part of the country’s largest study into coronavirus

Findings from Imperial College London and Ipsos MORI show the virus is now doubling every 7 to 8 days

Findings reinforce the need for the ‘rule of 6’ for social gatherings

The third report from the country’s largest study on coronavirus rates of infection has been published today showing that cases are increasing steadily across the country.

The study examines levels of infection in the general population in England. The latest findings for the period between 22 August and 7 September – testing more than 150,000 volunteers – indicate cases were doubling every 7 to 8 days. It is estimated 13 people per 10,000 were infected in England, compared with 4 people per 10,000 between 24 July and 11 August 2020.

These findings reinforce the need for continued vigilance from the public.

Okay, that's it, I'm just off out to look for a railway bridge,

Cases or no cases, folks need to get a grip.

We now have therapeutics for early and late stage covid, we now know NOT to throw everyone on a ventalator and blow their lungs up like the Dunlop blimp, and we now know NOT to send cov+folks into care homes.

Flu and influenza is currently killing more folks than covid.

We can expect more collateral damage until we have vaccines ready. Until then, cue the talk of 'sensible actions' and 'unnecessary hysteria'......

Some people thrive on imagining they are being controlled, it seems to give them purpose because they don't have the ability to distinguish sense and nonsense

Central

I think many of us became more relaxed as things opened up again, seemingly each indicating that things were better than they were. That infections are doubling in just over a week should be a good enough prompt for people to reinstate stricter rigidity on how they are behaving.

We must support the key group who are infected to fully isolate at home. I noted that France has reduced the 2 weeks isolation down to 1 week, which would mean people not losing as much money, by not working. We shouldn't expect that the poorer amongst us can afford to lose pay for 2 weeks, as well as risk losing their jobs - that's too much anxiety for people in jobs with no security. This epidemic has highlighted how the gig economy works against the public interest.

The figures are being made to show what people in power want them to show. How can we compare data that is based on different parameters. It is just hysteria and I am being careful but intend to still live my life to the full.

Tell me about it .

I totally get why people think covid19 is another flu, due to it being a respiratory disease (and let's face it, people get a cold and think it's flu). Also the fact that different viruses cause colds and also cause influenza. The present corona virus, hopefully, will be relegated to a status of being another bloody cold . However, while it's new, as it still is, we have to follow public health advice. It's just a shame we have a govt, who has given us reason to distrust them, is the orator

I agree that any data can be manipulated.

Common sense tells you if you test more people (for anything)you will find more cases.

That reflects increased testing as much as increased infection.

Depends what spin you want to put on it, and why.

"How is asking people to socially distance from other, wear masks, wash their hands and so seriously limit the amount of people they come into contact with mass hysteria?

"

It's not the mass hysteria comes from those who demand further full lockdowns to further protect the vulnerable from something that will never go away now until herd immunity is reached via infections and possibly a vaccine.

The hysterical demand these full lockdowns without a thought to the wide spread damage it does to the economy, people's jobs, mental health, rise in domestic abuse with support services in effect switched off, huge rise in suicides and countless deaths due to cancel NHS treatments.

The first national lockdown was for 1 reason to ensure the NHS wasn't swamped. It did its job and was the right measure for that time but if won't be done again.

All the things you mentioned like hand washing go in the sensible measures section not the hysteria one.

As a pragmatist, yes. As an empathetic human, no.
