£100 billion cost - which is probably an underestimate, as the capabilities don't exist yet. We'd get better results from a much tinier amount, by paying people full wage levels to stay in quarantine and not work, when they are identified as needing to isolate and not work.

To be workable it needs to be a simple to administer test that doesn't require a lab for processing - there is no way on earth we can build lab capacity for that level of testing in a year, never mind in a few months. Right now there is one possibile candidate - a new antigen test manufactured by LumiraDx. It fits the bill for a workable 'moonshot' test because :- The test is simple to do, needing no special skill & minimal training. It doesn't rely on central labs to process the tests. It produces results quickly (around 12 minutes) It appears to be reasonably specific and accurate (going by the published information at least) It does still require a machine to process the result but they are easily portable, making rapid local testing a reality. It's not too far fetched to imagine that, with sufficient investment, a network of local test stations could be created, allowing people to get tested at will and opening the way to truly 'covid safe' events. So while Borris is without doubt the biggest buffoon this side of the atlantic there may actually be some merit in the idea itself..." Jesus the time it took to type that out

Also, who's to say the public purse needs to foot the bill for the ongoing testing. I don't really see why the cost of the test can't be included in admission/ticket prices for events - after all, people will pay over £100 for a concert ticket so what's an extra tenner for the covid test... We're going to have to live with covid so if getting tested is the price of socializing normally we need to start thinking about who should pay. | |||
