Testing is a shambles

I had a mate who has symptoms of covid and went online for a test yesterday.

First 2 attempts were to travel between 150 to 200 miles.

He cancelled both and went back later to get one around 20 miles away...which he accepted.

Now I though it was just a blip on the system until I've seen the news today and it seems rife across the country.

I just think everything our gvmt seems to do is just a massive shambles.

What you think?

I heard that earlier on the radio. My initial thought was the people running it or the computer program just has no sense of geography?

I would think that’s an easy thing to arrange and worrying that it’s getting it wrong.

I think the govt have done a poor job with a lot of this.

I think the population have done a worse job with a lot of this.

I think having to try twice to get a test is not a great problem. It's not a perfect world and sometimes things don't work. If your mobile phone loses signal or drops a text and says please try again you wouldn't say its a shambles.

And i think it's good that more people are being tested.

I have heard of the occasional cockup but then you may get that I have heard a lot have had prompt local testing too. There are thousands of people getting tested daily so the occasional incident may occur.

But the process of getting a test is putting people off from getting one.

Surely if you are not online savvy like my mate is...it will seem too much.

Oh and the 3 attempts were spread over 3 hours.

I think if you have symptoms and we are all supposed to believe this is as bad as they like to make out then traveling anywhere with the risk of transmitting infection is to far. We as a nation have the capacity to do home testing on all. Would work out cheaper in the long run to stop all these stupid furlough schemes and get back out there incentives and just say hey back to normal for all and Inforce and pay for actual home testing for whole house holds of anyone with symptoms.

Around where we live testing has gone smoothly, over the last few weeks I know quite a few people who have had to get a test done and they havent had a bad word to say about the process so could just be down to how busy certain areas might be. Also the whole process has had to be rushed out and mistakes happen when people are rushing. The other thing ofcourse is you'll always hear when 1 person has recieved bad service but the 100 that recieved good service never mention it so you can often get a 1 sided view if you only look at complaints and dont compare that to the numbers through the door

the drop in centres are a good idea, aslong as you dont pop into the shops on the way the risk is low, they are also quick and convenient for many and the results are next day,no waiting for delivery/collections. So if anything they keep things moving quicker.

We had to go for a test, went on the gov website, put my postcode in, found a test centre 10 minutes away and could have had an appointment 40 minutes from booking it, but had to get one a couple of hours later. Our results were back 1½ days later. So in our experience, quite good.

Ii is the result of taking a centralised and privatised approach to what should be at local level. This government is ideologically opposed to local government and seeks to control everything centrally. The Tories obsession with private is good and public is bad has meant they have not used the expertise of Local Authorities’ Directors of Public Health and the local GPs to carry out local testing. They think it more appropriate to spend vast amounts of taxpayers money to their private sector friends and party donors. If they had allocated the support staff in a local basis with walk in test centres in high streets an GP practices it would work better. It is not just a shambles it’s a scandal. Test and trace is not world beating, it’s not fit for purpose.

We woke up with mild symptoms early yesterday morning, so booked tests through our local Council site.

We had our tests done by 9am 1 mile away from home.

Now, this was via our local Council In Gtr Manchester, am I right in thinking this is organised locally & not by the national system?

I’m not sure but I thought I heard on the news that they are rationing tests at some testing stations. So if the cases are low in an area, they are not having so many testers stationed at the testing station and hence the number of available testing slots will be reduced. This could then lead to another testing centre being suggested to the public and in some instances being miles away (over 200 in some cases). Additionally they are trying to have more tests performed in areas where there have been local lockdowns.

We as a nation are having the lowest infection rates in Europe dispite Scotland failing badly at containing the virus due to wonder failure Sturgeon.

We are winning so we must be doing a lot right dispite all the sad negative attitudes of so many in the media and here.

It is the U turns and decisions on the hoof that will win for us these are positives.

I admit have only realised this in the last few days

All's well that ends well then - if you look at the covid testing sites map I doubt that there is any test center more than 10/20 miles away for the next one.

The Map doesn't show Wales however.

When I try to buy something online from Currys for some reason it keeps placing me in Scotland (I'm in Staffordshire) but that is automated systems for you I guess.

Testing station is about 2 miles away, always empty.

Before it opened loads of people moaning there was no local testing facilities, it opens to great fanfare and nobody shows up.

Couldn't write it.

After this virus think I understand why politicians treat the public with contempt, we deserve it.

Its opened my eyes this last 6 months.

Probably too much time working from home, time to get back to work, can't wait.

I'll never complain about long hours and working away from home again or at least until next time.

One of the major problems too is that many people cannot be contacted because they have given the wrong details (on purpose) on slips of paper in restaurants/pubs etc.

They simply don't want to fill it in right or don't want to be told to isolate should they be contacted by Track and Trace.

Central

We've had a fairly shockingly bad testing as well as tracing systems in place, whilst some fortunate businesses who got the outsourced contracts have done very nicely from our imposed catastrophe. Much of it was formerly NHS and public state work, so we need to remember that privatisation by stealth does not automatically improve quality levels, nor save the public purse.

The simple tracing tasks of just making contact with known people who could have been infected, run by the Tory MPs wife Dido, is utterly shambolic. She's now been placed in control of more of our health services

It's really upsetting that so many of our great citizens who are vulnerable have been thrown to the wolves.

The uptake of Track and Trace by end-users (us) has been pretty abysmal in most countries per-head-of-populaton (the data is easy to find through google).

Figures in July reported that a full 33% of track and trace subjects had given false information or did not answer phones to track and trace staff - that's assuming they had given the correct number to start with.

Even Germany can only report that 12.2 million people downloaded the app - from a population of 84 Million people (adjust for Adults)

While it's easy to criticise what each goverment did or didn't do, we also have 'ourselves' to blame too.

Booked a test for an elderly relative with symptoms, had to make 3 calls as kept getting cut-off, on 3rd attempt speaking to different operators( it was obvious working from home),asked everything bar inside leg measurements, finally bar-code issued and test arranged.

I would think any poor old person without a smart-phone or not pc-savvy would have given up -oh-then it would be possible they could go home and die of it without being tested and wouldnt show up on the books-thats not the reason surely

Or get a friend or relative to help them with it. Just like they do with anything else they struggle with. Only a drama if you choose to make it so. Or could have booked it for them online.

Fact people are struggling to get tests whether they are savvy or not!

As I'm typing this it's just been on the local BBC news that people from teesside that has a few testing sites of it's own...are being sent 70 miles to bradford.

Yeah the same bradford that has a far higher r rate then teesside.

No drama

I've known plenty of people get tests easily and quickly, either delivered to their house or visited a test site. If you keep looking for bad news you'll find it.

Someone recently complained that the closest test site was miles away, a very quick search showed this wasn't the case at all, they just hadn't bothered trying to find out. We do have a certain amount of responsibility for ourselves.

You do know that the test needs to be processed in a lab, by a trained lab tech on a machine that costs thousands of pounds?

It's not a question of capacity at the test sites, it's a lack of lab capacity that's the problem. No point in taking swabs if there isn't the capacity to process them, is there?

There are very few labs equipped & staffed for mass rt-pcr testing as it just wasn't needed pre-covid. Yes, some local health authorities have limited local capacity but it's exactly that, limited and completely unsuitable for bulk testing.

The real question has to be why it seems to take forever and a mountain of red tape to approve any sort of new test. There's several I know of from 90 minute doctors office tests to 12 minute instant tests and even the potential for a home test, all stuck in red tape.

Why?

I think you're lucky. In Newcastle areas they've struggled, having to cross to the opposite side of the country - not great if you're unwell, nor when getting tested quickly is vital, to help to limit the spread of infection. If someone had no private transport, they'd potentially be spreading it along 70 odd miles of public transport trips and passengers

Then there's the processing of the tests, when some people are waiting over a week for results

Why?"

Tests and other medically-related products, that would have life-or-death impacts from their use, need to be screened to not just rely on manufacturer given success and failure details. As the UK made substantial cuts to state employee and services over the last 10 years, it's also likely that we have limited our potential for doing such things as effectively as we could have. We also failed to respond and resource our epidemic readiness, after the failures we had in our testing for an easier to cope with epidemic trial a couple of years ago. We get in some respects what is obviously the likely outcomes from much that we do.

A lot of test facilities have been offered by businesses but many have had very different quality of results from those claimed. Johnson even trumpeted rapid tests via Amazon etc back in the spring but they were failures and wasted a lot of money.

I think all government messages having been gently trying to persuade people to do the right thing, there is no serious consequences and I think alot of people need some actual harsh reality checks in their lives.

Also the government claim one thing but the truth is another matter, why claim to be able to carry out as many tests as they say and then get nowhere near that level in reality.

There also seems to be no transparency, different ministers say different things, and choices don't always seem science based.

There's a lot of reasons that people have stopped caring and most of those reasons come from the governments lack of decisive action.

Testing is an absolute mess and we weren't even near the capacity the government claimed....

"Around where we live testing has gone smoothly, over the last few weeks I know quite a few people who have had to get a test done and they havent had a bad word to say about the process so could just be down to how busy certain areas might be. Also the whole process has had to be rushed out and mistakes happen when people are rushing. The other thing ofcourse is you'll always hear when 1 person has recieved bad service but the 100 that recieved good service never mention it so you can often get a 1 sided view if you only look at complaints and dont compare that to the numbers through the door "

Quite agree, was going to say something similar then read this.

The BBC use this method to judge public concern over programs, theirs however is 1 in 1000 not 1 in 100.

The testing is rather hit n miss and as someone earlier rightly said if the millions that has been wasted in various schemes had been channelled into national testing then our figures and stats would be be far more accurate than they are. This would have helped a lot more in giving the public the confidence that is much needed and much better use of resources to tackle this issue.

I said SOME responsibility. It's impossible to book a test online without seeing the message to only book a test if you are displaying symptoms. The same message is displayed on most GP websites. It's the advice given wherever you look. Yet some people choose to ignore it, book a test they aren't eligible for and in doing so exacerbate the problem. And that cannot be blamed on the government however much you might want to. There are things we are all personally accountable for

There are things we are all personally accountable for "

Well, everyone is enjoying blaming the government for the public's fuck ups. Plus, he has a point, people have booked tests when they were unnecessary, it's a waste of limited resources and people are paying the price. We have responsibility to act in a sensible manner and follow the guidelines. We cannot expect to have someone holding our hand for every second of every day.

You say we can't expect someone to hold our hands but what do you suggest the answer is to get people to actually follow the rules.

If people don't listen then the government needs to bring in stricter rules surely?

A proportion of people couldn't give a shit what the rules are, they don't listen or care and use a pathetic excuse as to why they feel they can do whatever they want!

Exactly, how is people not following the rules the governments fault? What stricter rules do you suggest?

We shouldn't have to be threatened into submission, we should have just done what was asked of us, people being spoiled brats has got feck all to do with the government.

Testing is a mess because people are misusing the service, only people with symptoms or those advised by a medical professional should be going for tests for anyone that just fancies one. "

The problem is not who's doing the tests...their is no shortage on kits either. It's the lab capacity.

Wonder why that was never foreseen

hiding from cock pics.

Someone I chatted to recently was also under the impression that if you are swabbed in multiple places each one can be counted as a separate positive.

So one person on one particular day might be counted as more than one person testing positive. And then also if they are positive again a few days later they are again counted as at least one more positive test.

HIV is spread by transferring bodily fluids if that’s how you shake hands you’re doing it wrong.

This was March.... maybe if he had been to a Cobra meeting he may have been more clued up to how infectious it was as the rest of the country knew.

We won't stop the spread, it's about minimising the impact of the spread. The only solution to the covid problem will be a vaccine or natural immunity with the long term goal being herd immunity to protect the people unable to have the vaccine. We need to keep the spread at a manageable level with low deaths and low hospitalisations. As the country opens back up we will get more cases, it makes perfect sense that we are getting a rise in cases now. The local lockdowns will help keep the spread at a level where we still have some control.

We know that people still have antibodies a few months after infection, so if the less vulnerable get it now they will have at least some immunity over the winter period which will lower the chance of the hospitals being over run during flu season and leave beds for more vulnerable members of society that may need critical care.

Before anyone dives on me, these are my personal opinions.

After looking about a little I think a lot is down to were companies who have had a lot of kits to test their staff...are now testing more and the labs can't cope with it.

Now if I can find that out surely the government can tell the truth and say what the problem is.

"It seems Hancock has been reading this thread, as he is passing the blame back on to the public.

Apparently the lack of available tests is down to people asking for a test for frivolous reasons.

I wonder how long it would take "

From what I see he might just be right tho.

Someone sneezes they want a test.

Problem is that the people that should be tested aren't being tested because they don't have symptoms.

Apart from testing everyone every day what's to do ?

Better triage ?

Insist those with symptoms isolate rather than get tested as it's a bit of a waste ?

Only test those who thrown up by track and trace ?

What's the answers ?

So are we suggesting that people who don’t need testing are being tested hmm how do we decide who needs and who does not need testing???? If you show any symptoms get tested, work

Send you home cause they don’t feel you are well get tested, someone you know has tested positive get tested, you are found by track and trace get tested ofcourse there is people being tested that don’t actually need testing that’s why there are negative results lol what a fucking joke. It’s all fucking bollox to be honest. Right now if no one was being tested no one would even know corona existed.

What a shambles it is how can you say people who don’t need testing are being tested lol what’s the means test for that. Bunch of absolute cunts that have ruined the lives of millions of people in this country with a pointless lock down and now try to blame them for their in incompetence too

"Shocking & shambolic testing - And for him to turn it on the public, teeth and lying come to mind just like this whole .Gov

After looking about a little I think a lot is down to were companies who have had a lot of kits to test their staff...are now testing more and the labs can't cope with it.

Now if I can find that out surely the government can tell the truth and say what the problem is.

But no...divide and rule blame the frivolous public for it "

It's how you spin it, and they have masters of spin employed by them.

I've asked before but there are thousands who show no signs of Covid and have it but are not going for tests, simply because they don't feel they need too.

Do they need too? If so how do you persuade them to get tested?

Germany went door to door testing each house hold months and months ago, yet we can't even get the chain organised let alone sufficient testing.

Don't know if the lock down was a waste of time but then I had to work anyway. Think it might have saved more lives then it has ruined?

. Pointless . Deaths and hospitalisations where doubling every 4 days. On that trajectory we would have filled even the nightingale beds within a matter of weeks and then what? There are big issues with the testing system that need resolved fast but it’s not just MPs who are incompetent, there are layers of dumbnuts in the system

The government says if you haven't been asked to get a test and are showing no signs then you shouldn't be tested.

"Went online last night at 8pm. Went for a test 5 miles away at 0930 this morning.

I’m happy for you. Mobile or PC?

I’ve had two pop up with slots available but all filled whilst I was booking. "

Using mobile to access the website. I’ve just done it again as my first test from Monday has been resulted as “unclear “. New slots are supposed to be loaded onto the online portal at 8pm, I had to keep refreshing for 30 minutes before anything came up but again I have an appointment for 8am tomorrow, 2 miles away.

If our experience this week is anything to go by then schools Outside of major conurbations will be shut in a month! We kept one off as they & I have colds/coughs. No temperature, no symptoms. The school sent the other child home & don’t want either back until they’ve been tested.

Two days now, postal testing not available, no walk ins or drive through testing either. Hours & hours wasted putting in all our details only to get “Sorry busy, try again later” so now I won’t bother & they can stay home for two more weeks.

They go to a small school of approx 300-320. There are now 15 kids off who cannot get tests booked & we are not even in cold/flu season yet!

In a month or so schools will have run out of pupils!

It’s a complete shambles..

If you live in a town or city you should be ok, our nearest test centre is 24 miles away the next is about 35 miles & they are massively over subscribed. It seems as though Public Health Wales & the Welsh Assy seem you think Wales stops 20 miles north of the M4!

I just don't get it, at the start of this the World Health Organisation stated the way forward and to save life was Test Test Test. So by now we need to be testing about 1million or more a day even at that rate is would take 3 months to test everyone.

With the money spent on furlough & eat out to help out. Why has more not gone on testing?

"I had a mate who has symptoms of covid and went online for a test yesterday.

What you think?"

I think he's lucky I know of people this week that have been trying to get a test since Saturday via the gov.uk site but getting the site is busy try again later messages.

That’s one of the most annoying parts, spend ten mins (if more than one of you) putting in details to get “Busy try later” The system should ask for name & postcode then tell you if there’s slots, you can fill the rest in after..

Don’t close the page when you get to “busy” just refresh every minute or so until it loads the next page.

Cheers, got a bit further but test site too far away, especially when I know there are three nearer ones so I’ll try again in the early morning.

hi all,

hope you’re keeping well. I just wanted to share some info on testing as it seems people are struggling to get a hold of tests.

At the moment, the current way to book a test is to call 119 or go to the nhs.uk website

Tests are in high demand but the website is updated fairly frequently. Please remember you will need to self isolate for a minimum of 10 days from the day your symptoms started. Do not assume you have a cold! get tested!

Mart needed to be tested last Monday, got online at 1030, had a test 12 miles away at 1pm, results back 48 hours later.

Seems ok to us.

At the moment it’s 10 days from when your symptoms started or 10 days starting from the day you receive a positive test result if you’re asymptomatic

You can shot all the question Mark's in that you wish.

The simple reply is we should never have got to this stage.

We have had 6 months to get this sorted

But now after we have sent the kids back to school with all the huffing and puffing about how safe it was to do so..we find ourselves in the position that we do not have enough test capacity to do this.

Poorly planned on every footing and has made it a total shambles.
