Today celebrities have started a campaign to urge people who think they have cancer symptoms to see their GP. Mine referred me for an urgent biopsy but the hospital phoned me yesterday to say they are still not doing any biopsies and have no idea when they will restart.

Thank you. When diagnosis and treatment starts again there will be such a backlog I am sure it will be too late for some.

That's not good enough, needs to be immediately.

I'm sure if you were in France they would not mess around!!

IF it's skin cancer then CBD oil has been proven to eliminate cancer

There have been numerous claims that CBD oil is the answer to just about everything, which in itself should raise alarm bells...

That is awful. Do you have another hospital near you, private or otherwise? If so, enquire if they are doing biopsies? Rationale: aren't hospitals supposed to be getting back to normal? They may befailing NICE (cancer) guidelines.

The CQC may be able to help you.

My GP is emailing the hospital to explain why she thinks I should be seen urgently. I now also have a phone call with a consultant on 1st September where I can plead my case. If that is fruitless I will go private.

How come they keep popping up to say the nhs is open?

They seem to be putting the blame on the patients for not going to get the tests/treatments.

It's a fucking disgrace.

I really do hope you take some of the advice given on here op and report the fuckers. I would go to your local press or radio station to highlight this.

Good luck

i know money doesn't equate to life but reading this it feels to me that they are storing up a situation where they will end up having to pay out compensation to families of lost loved ones when an enquiry later says they were denying people live saving medical treatment unnecessarily

it was understandable when the hospitals were in fire fight mode and we thought we were going to need the nightingales etc but thats not where we are at anymore and particularly if they anticipate a second wave they should be getting as many peoples bau treatments and screenings through now before they get hit again

Medical research doesn't work like that. Gold standard research will be double blind placebo and any evidence peer reviewed and published in reputable journals. Whilst it's great to have hope, treatment results will vary by each individual and there's unlikely to be anything new that's got significant weight of evidence behind it that approaches what a layperson may think of as proof, akin to a guarantee.

So we had a 14 day rule in England, to be seen by a consultant if suspected cancer.

Anyone know if this has been adjusted?

There will have been caveats due to the pandemic. However, if DHSC has stated a return to normality for NHS services then surely plans must be public knowledge. Not doing or knowing when biopsy procedures are being returned is not acceptable and needs to be enquired upon. In the past, private hospitals have been utilised by the NHS and should be again. Hence why I suggested enquiries to other hospitals local to the OP. Also, the cqc may have knowledge in this area.

God forbid Trusts are delaying services due to the expense of the pandemic - I wouldn't put it past the number crunchers.

Yes. I got diagnosed with prostate cancer 2 1/2 years ago. My last appointment was in October last year. My 6 monthly visit in April never happened for obvious reasons but I’m due a phone call next Wednesday morning.

This is bonkers. I've just recently had gynae surgery that I've been waiting over a year on the list for. The NHS sent me to the local private hospital to have it done. Now, I needed it doing because of the issues it caused me, however, it wasn't life saving - pelvic organ prolapse doesn't c death. Cancer can. I can't fathom how they can be doing gynae surgery in one place but cancelling biopsies in another. Complain, Sally! Write to your local CCG and ask to be sent to the private hospital for it. My stepdad is having hernia surgery on the NHS but in private hospital soon, again, he's waited over a year but its not life saving stuff.

It's more to find out whether other places are doing it, giving you ammunition to fight with. Your GP has to go by the local CCG but having stated that, they can make allowances.

Seems to be a much greater reliance on private healthcare?

I suppose you could argue this is borne out of necessity, but I think this is where we are heading in the next few years.

NHS is open but is still restricted by govt restrictions. My team are only allowed half in the base at a time which means half the number of appointments seen which in turn impacts on waiting times. It's not for the want of willingness from the workforce.

Health Service ! What Health Service? Our Government appears to have closed the NHS under the pretext of the Virus and largely closed down the private sector too! It is utterly disgraceful. I am no fan of private medicine but if the NHS isn't doing it's job, let's be rid of it and save the fortune it costs us all. Enough said. Sorry, rant over. Pete.

It still sounds wrong to me, especially when I see hospital consultants popping up on tv.

Then to hear the other side of the story here.

What is cutting the patient limits down due to Gov restrictions may I ask?

a longer waiting time while still not ideal is it least a better result and has an explanation behind it rather than sorry we just dont book biopsies at the moment

There was a Panorama programme aired around 1st week of July regarding the effects of Cancer treatments during Covid which I found quite interesting.

I myself have been investigated, diagnosed and treated for Cancer - all since April, so at the peak of all this. I was one of the luckier patients, and although delayed and passed around a bit.. it has still been dealt with. There will be so many missed though unfortunately, and I honestly don’t know the answer/solution

Sadly this is just 1 of the many areas that the extended lockdown and subsequent current restrictions to tackle covid19 has directly effected leading to unnecessary loss of life.

Whole industries are still shut down and many businesses on the brink with furlough winding down yet daily covid19 death rates are now in single figures and lower than the daily excess suicide rates.

Look at the global pandemic responses impact to food shortages worldwide, many scientists are predicting serious famines in the next 12 months due to the pandemic response.

Going back to just the UKs Cancer effect the London-based Institute for Public Policy Research wrote that Britons missed more than 200,000 cancer screenings each week of the lockdown, and the backlog remains.

In fact in certain trusts the backlogs are still building due the heavy restrictions NHS are still having to work under.

My Dad's stage 4 terminal prostrate cancer treatment was stopped completely in March and has only just had elements of it started again. The rise in his PSA readings have been frightening.

We hope you get sorted Sally and wish you the best.

KJ

This must be either very unlikely cases or a few select hospitals.

I had a test that showed up with precancerous cells. Got my biopsy and cells removed 2 weeks later.

This was in the hight of lockdown and the only problem covid caused for me was that I couldn't have a chaperone.

I've also had a lump checked in my breast but nothing was done because it was simply a cyst.

I'm sure if your doctors are concerned they'll rush you through no matter what.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this.
