Anyone who has whinged about the Oxford vaccine being produced too speedily should be positively running in the opposite direction of the Russian one. Do you really think Mr Putin has gone through the proper regulatory processes, however compressed? Or do you think he wants Mother Russia to look like the saviour of the world? The same Mr Putin who denied the existence of Covid in Russia for a long time and who continues to deny the scale of it there. Forgive my Putin related skepticism

I suspect Mr Putin is doing some dick waving, but the proof of tbe pudding is in the eating.

It'll not be rolled out here until it's been peer reviewed and tested.

It's looking like there are a number of potential contenders on this side of tbe horizon now, so excellent news.

Infact I think there should be an unbiased news report once a month and that's it.

There are a lot of vaccines under development and the Russian 1 would still be at that stage, if it was being developed here. It's had approval there when it couldn't get it here, as it's not been through its stage 3 trials, tested on large numbers of people, to more fully check its safety and effectiveness levels.

It may be great and if it can help to save lives, with availability for poorer and other societies, it could be a game changer. Russia have likely approved it at such an early stage to help boost some egos.

I'd not take it at this point

I suspect the Russian vaccine is in fact at a similar stage to the others - it's completed safety trials & been shown to produce an antibody response.

From there, there are two ways to prove it works - the way we're doing which is to give it to thousands of high risk people and see if they get covid naturally or to conduct a 'challenge trial' where a group are vaccinated, tested for antibodies, then deliberately exposed to the disease to see if they get ill.

The second is much quicker but much more risky (you could, in theory, kill a healthy person if the vaccine doesn't work) which is why we aren't (yet) doing it and it won't tell you how long the protection lasts. It will however allow you to distribute a protective, working vaccine much more quickly. In a heavily state controlled country like Russia it would be much easier to carry out challenge trials than in the more open west.

It's also worth remebering the Russians have very significant experience in virology (State Centre for Virology - VECTOR), during the cold war years they were widely considered to be far in advance of western scientists in the development of biological weaponary & countermeasures. Those skills won't have disappeared and are exactly the same skills you need to develop a vaccine.

So in short, I think there is a very good chance Russia's vaccine works & is safe BUT we can't know if it will provide effective protection long enough without boosters to be viable.
