So I was in town last weekend and came across a group of protesters. They seem to imply everything the government asks is infringing their rights. They're against social distancing, testing, tracing and vaccines.

The protesters were not wearing masks and pretty close to one another ... one was even saying that covid is a hoax and a conspiracy.

I've also come across teenagers/20-somethings who are taking it lightly and feel it's not serious even if they catch the virus.

Sad to see so many deluded people, says something about the quality of our science education.

It's a conspiracy until they catch it. Good reason to keep out of town centres and pubs IMO

It's just people reacting to too exaggerated claims by the government no bearing on education today...

The Young today far more educated than ever before and more aware the world issues.

I am not a government spokesman, but certainly I'd say anyone who thinks covid is a hoax is deluded. I might even use stronger language than that.

And a knee jerk reaction against any vaccination period is equally deluded.

Tin town

I'm surprised that the govt have not yet worked out the double bluff... Tell everyone to ensure they stand on top of each other when ever possible... Make sure you go and visit your old mum and her elderly mates and make sure you sneeze over them and share a glass with them... Literally... Never ever wear any form of face covering and whatever you do... Don't wash your hands.....

One of the most common things to occur before adolescents mature into adulthood, is to rebel against (some form of) authority. It says nothing about education but rites of passage.

I wouldn't say far more educated but through the Internet, they definitely are more aware of world issues.

I'd say the majority of people rejecting the science are older people, my experience is that people crying hoax are more likely to be in the over 40 or over 50 age range. It's not modern science education we need to question - it's education from a few decades ago.

Having said that, as a science educator, I'd say the curriculum at the moment is too focused on fact regurgitation and not enough on critical analysis and problem solving. The minute practical examinations are removed from assessments, you dumbed down science education. To get a Biology A level now, you only need carry out 12 practical activities over two years, so 6 per year. In context, for the 39 weeks of the school term, that's one practical activity every six weeks, approx. Practical science should be taught every single week.

As someone who went through their rebellious adolescent phase fairly recently, let me tell you that there is still a line you don't cross, and putting your family and vulnerable members of society at risk for the sake of getting d*unk with your mates in a park for sure counts as a big ass line.

But then again, I went to school in Europe for part of my childhood where the education system is far more advanced.

Some will cross the line, some won't. Possibly related to presence of empathy or non-dysfunctional family.

Re education better elsewhere - no surprise.

Education is not better elsewhere universally. The students I teach from China and the Middle East, who have been educated in the didactical style, dependent entirely on textbooks (with selective content) and a culture of never questioning the teacher, are very poor at critical thinking. They struggle to evaluate information and make their own assessments of it, e.g. when doing practical work. They come to be educated in the UK because their families (and Governments, in many cases) believe British education is superior. They could go to the US, Australia, Canada etc, but instead they come here.

LOL that might be the first time someone has referred to my family as "non-dysfunctional" . I did have a lot of discipline growing up though, something I think these teens are most likely severely lacking! My peers and I - even as chainsmoking, park-drinking, sex-having rebellious teens - would never have DREAMED of doing things like attacking police at illegal street raves. Pure disrespectful little shits that obviously didn't get threatened with the wooden spoon enough as kids

It reflects on gullible people open to manipulation of their minds by poor influences. There's an enormous amount of trash that's being regurgitated for the pliable of thought, typically not from any credible, reputable sources.
