Dogs are being trained to sniff out people with the virus, this could really help the situation, they need 30,000 t shirts to train the dogs.

They sniff them. But they'd need to know if you had the virus or not first to see how accurate the dogs are.

I've just looked into this and although I can't find a mention of t-shirts, they are looking to train dogs to detect covid in people, they think it will be helpful at airports etc

I've worked with sniffer dogs - they are incredible.

I see they have now trained them to warn diabetics if their blood sugar is falling.

They need t-shirts of people with active infection because they will train the dogs to detect the smell. It would seem lots of disease/health problems cause a person's normal odour to change in a way that is imperceptible to humans, but is detectable by dogs (and other animals). Hence dogs who detect diabetes hypos, breast cancer and other things. Seizure detecting dogs are trained to spot the very early twitches or minor signs of fitting rather than a smell and are trained to get the person into a safe position so they don't fall off a bed or hit their head as they have the seizure.

It also says they can be trained to detect changes in temperature which could detect an early fever.

Would be a great help I think in areas such as airports, train stations etc.

Central

They could be a fantastic resource to identify people who don't know their have it, due to early days or those who get no symptoms. People could then get a test, isolating and having their contacts traced.

Any rool that can identify the many people who don't know they have a problem is valuable.

Then the dog gets infected..

Passes it on to its kennel mates, handlers and everyone it snorts all over.

Great for cancers, but for a disease that appears to infect any mammal.

I'm out...

Dogs have been used for all sorts of things and have been shown to be able to detect cancers and other illnesses. If they can do that then it's logical to see if they can do this too.

If they can, it's then about whether they'll be able to train enough dogs quickly enough to actually make a difference. A sniffer dog can't work for that long before it becomes unreliable.

The press seem to be reporting every idea put forward for trial as if it's going to be the next big thing that unlocks the covid cure, when it's just an idea that needs trialing to test it's effectiveness.
