Not convinced the balearics or canaries are going to be much of a political bargaining chip but stand to be corrected.

It's because labour were pushing the govt for financial support for those that had to quarantine ....

They realized they fucked up by allowing non essential travel and quarantine ...

Nope it's seeing a government that has fucked up time and time again. But we will leave it there as it will make this too political and get the thread moved...and yes I brought it up first.

if this is true what a dumb move by labour ... by trying to be the “provider for all” they will push even more companies under ... not just on those islands but travel companies here

people were well aware they were booking with risk and were free to take that choice before and bear the consequences if they arose

If you book or go on holiday during a pandemic then you have to expect the rules to change with out notice. Its the high risk you take.

dont disagree with this... before i booked i planned for the possibility of having to quarantine on either end

but while you should be prepared for them to change without notice, you should be able to expect that those decisions would be taken for your safety and not because a bunch of overgrown children want to score points against each other in the hope of more seats at the next election

at the moment the spanish islands have lower rates of covid than the uk ... this decision was not taken for safety

It is true that the Spanish Islands have lower rates of covid than than the UK.

However, those islands are part of Spain and the Balearics are in close proximity to mainland Spain.

So if Spain is being excluded then that should include its Islands if they are close by.

I guess if any other country requests UK citizens to quarantine, then that would include the isle of Wight as well.

But like you say, the decision could be political; rather than geographical.

the canary islands are off the coast of africa so no proximity to spain and even the balearics have their own international airports meaning travel through mainland Spain isnt required ... so in those respects i dont think its comparable with isle of wight being part if uk

Where did you get the information that covid rates are lower in Spain than in the UK? the ones I saw stated Spain rate in the last week was... 35.1 per 100000 and the uks was 14.7 per 100000

that is mainland spain being driven by the spikes in Madrid and catelonia

the canary islands which are roughly the same distance to the uk as they are from spain currently (govt data updated as at 24th july) only have 144 cases in total across 5 islands and haven't had a single death in over a month

they had 162 deaths IN TOTAL across the 5 islands mainly so low because despite relying allost solely on tourism, these people sacraficed their business and complied with a 100% lockdown and just as they are getting back on their feet they are now being penalised for outbreaks 1000s of miles away

im watching people i know with family run businesses get back to work only 2 days or reopen their bar 5 days ago because tourists were finally returning then this has happened. will be very sad to watch if any of them go under

If it's a health-based decision, there must have been some incredibly large changes between Friday and Sunday and then onto Monday, for such substantial differences just hours apart.

It seems highly unlikely that things have altered like that. It's perhaps political posturing from them for some reason, as if their first restrictions weren't tough enough to make a big statement.

Not sure where Sweden fits in here but they look to have abotu 40 cases per 100000 at 26th July - higher than Spain - although falling.
