Travellers returning to the UK from Spain will have to quarantine for 14 days from Sunday, the BBC understands.

It is believed the measures will come into force in the early hours of Sunday.

The UK government is expected to announce the change imminently, due to a significant spike in coronavirus cases in Spain.

Spain has warned a second wave could be imminent as cities including Madrid and Barcelona have seen cases surge.

The freedom with which to move from country to country and hot spot to hotspot means you cannot effectively lockdown. Quarantining visitors who fly is one thing, quarantining visitors who have the ability to drive and take transport freely across borders and into hotspots is quite another.

"I wonder why this new spike is happening ? Is it air conditioning perhaps as spain has been experiencing some very high temperatures recently ?"

The rise in cases has been mainly in the younger age bracket, hence the closing down of clubs, etc., as view is that they've been partying in bars, clubs and on beaches without practising social distancing...

Had all our flights cancelled that we had booked even our end of August one cancelled the other day by Jet2 so we can’t even get out there let alone pass anything on Lol. The forum was relating to a place in Spain being locked down that as very few Brit visitors but we still get the blame, nothing to do with the Spanish that live inland now deciding to holiday and hit the clubs on the coast of course.

Spain removed from travel corridors exemption list

If you arrive in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland from Spain on or after 26 July 2020 you will need to self-isolate.

Published 25 July 2020

From:

Department for Transport and Foreign & Commonwealth Office

Federico García Lorca Airport, Granada, Spain

Spain no longer on travel corridor list, travellers arriving into England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from Spain from midnight tonight will need to self-isolate

people already in Spain can stay for the remainder of their holiday and will have to self-isolate upon return

FCO now advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain

People returning to the UK from Spain (including islands) from midnight tonight (25 July 2020) will need to self-isolate for 2 weeks, with the country removed from the travel corridors list.

Following a significant change over the last week in both the level and pace of change in confirmed cases, Spain has been removed from the list of countries where people do not have to self-isolate when arriving into to the UK.

People currently on holiday in Spain are encouraged to follow the local rules, return home as normal and check the FCO’s travel advice pages on GOV.UK for further information.

FCO is advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain – this does not cover the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands because travel advice is based on the risk to the individual traveller and COVID-19 infection rates are lower there than mainland Spain.

People will still need to self-isolate when returning from anywhere in Spain as well as the Canary and Balearic Islands because self-isolation arrangements are put in place on the basis of risk to the UK as a whole.

A government spokesperson said:

The Joint Biosecurity Centre together with Public Health England have updated their coronavirus assessments of Spain based on the latest data. As a result, Spain has been removed from the lists of countries from which passengers arriving in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are exempted from the need to self-isolate.

Protecting public health is our absolute priority and we have taken this decision to limit any potential spread to the UK.

We’ve always been clear that we would act immediately to remove a country where necessary. Both our list of quarantine exemptions and the FCO travel advice are being updated to reflect these latest risk assessments.

Changes to the exemption for people returning from Spain will take effect from midnight tonight, meaning anyone returning from midnight tonight will have to self-isolate.

The government has made consistently clear it will take decisive action if necessary to contain the virus, including if the public health risk of people returning from a particular country and not self-isolating becomes too high.

The devolved administrations have all taken the same decision today, so travellers arriving from Spain into all parts of the UK will need to self-isolate.

The government is urging employers to be understanding of those returning from Spain who now will need to self-isolate

I heard the initial outbreaks in Spain came from the care homes, slaughterhouses and the seasonal workers from Morocco who live in overcrowded houses in Spain which makes social distancing a little difficult, not sure how the brits fit into these three categories, cases are also rising in Spanish teenagers and from what I’ve seen teenagers don’t social distance at the best of times let alone when they get to go clubbing which appears to have been another contributing factor in Barcelona.

Not surprised us brits get the blame. So much easier than looking at there own population. Not so long ago they were asking to not be on the quarantine list as they wanted the tourists now they blame them. Maybe brevity will be blamed for it next

It's been commented on some news bulletins tonight that in Spain, the consensus of blame has been targeted towards younger people, but across all nationalities.

Those groupings behave as if they're invincible and the virus won't hit or affect them.

I'm Spanish and this is the very first time I learn that people in Spain blame the UK for the spikes.

In the Spanish media and in theconversations with friends and family about, the blame on UK is still to appear (if it, some time,

does it so).

I'd not regard that opinion as a majority's at all.

Is it a British thing ?

Why is there a need to apportion blame ?

We are in a pandemic, we have a new disease that we are struggling to understand and come to terms with.

We have locked down the world to try to slow the virus and give us a chance to understand and now we are unlocking the world and trying to deal with the consequences of doing so.

Mistakes have been made and more will doubtless be made but here is a other part of the learning process and it seems that some people again feel the need to blame someone else.

Grow up people, accept responsibility for your own actions, learn from your mistakes and from the inevitable mistakes of others and stop the blame game.

What a strange comment. I'm sure many more people in the uk have both got and has the virus than figures say.. but... we can't say x amount do.. all we can do is Give the results of those that have tested positive.

Also, regarding returning tourists being required to quarantine. How does the govt expect to check and enforce this? Plus, once thru customs how do they travel to their place of quarantine? Via public transport??

"Just been on a Spanish forum I use and they are blaming the Brit’s for Spain’s second wave, which is about the norm from the expats over there.

We are still getting 2800 new infections per day...so theres a good chance we play a big part in it. 2800, where are you getting your stats from..its been no higher than 800 per day last few weeks and we are testing more people than ever. More tests more cases.

So you didn't bother with link eh

no need. its wrong

Why ask then

i corrected you.

Ah I see you think the only people with Covid in the U.K. are the ones who take the test.

Gotcha

so you think guessing is a good way to get figures?? Gotcha!

It’s not a guess it’s the latest estimate from the ONS"

so they say 2800 new infections in UK in one day?? they dont say that.

2,800 will be an estimate. They estimate that only 1 in 5 cases are identified so the current 500-600 positive cases would give the 2,800 figure.

As posted above, enforcement by random spot checks...

....and if unable to travel privately to a nominated address, then quarantine will be at a government-designated place, at the person's (not public)... expense

In the Spanish media and in theconversations with friends and family about, the blame on UK is still to appear (if it, some time,

"Is it a British thing ?

Why is there a need to apportion blame ?

We are in a pandemic, we have a new disease that we are struggling to understand and come to terms with.

We have locked down the world to try to slow the virus and give us a chance to understand and now we are unlocking the world and trying to deal with the consequences of doing so.

Mistakes have been made and more will doubtless be made but here is a other part of the learning process and it seems that some people again feel the need to blame someone else.

Grow up people, accept responsibility for your own actions, learn from your mistakes and from the inevitable mistakes of others and stop the blame game.

I don't know where your father in law lives but I can assure you that is not the case where we are, nor in Benidorm where we have just spent a couple of days.

In the Torrevieja area it is almost 100% compliance and the very few who we see not wearing masks are mostly young Spanish. Ditto Benidorm.

We have been here 4 weeks and have yet to see anyone arguing about masking up.

Text message from jet2

Following the latest government advice regarding travel to the UK from Spain, we are advising customers to arrive for their flights as normal as we are continuing to operate our scheduled programme to the Balearics and the Canaries. Our usual terms and conditions apply. As always, please ensure you have the appropriate travel insurance before travelling. This is a fast-moving situation, and we are continuing to monitor the situation very closely. If anything changes, we ll be in touch. Thank you for your patience.

When you get home, its 2 week quarantine yet you CANNOT claim ssp UNLESS you show symptoms.

This leads me to wonder how many will falsely claim to have symptoms to get ssp, this leading to a spike powered by what are essentially false positives, this leading to more lockdowns over here.

Spot on.

I think the employer should pay them and maybe take 2 weeks off any further holidays...but I dont know how that could work for zero hour workers.

But if we are going down this route we need a plan...and enforcement of the plan.

Inevitable as people have lost the ability of taking responsibility for their actions. I'm going on holiday in the middle of a pandemic but you have to fly me back when I want: that's my right!

Unless they don't work, you tell your colleagues where you're going for holiday and you won't be able to return to work.

If people are genuinely so stupid to travel overseas in the middle of a global pandemic, where the situation in almost every country is changing on a daily basis, then there should be no surprises when situations change. Average person gets 5 to 6 weeks leave a year. So they want a fortnight's holiday but something goes wrong and they have to have 14 days of work to quarantine...employer shouldn't have to pay because they chose to go on holiday through a pandemic...so they lose a further 2 weeks from that 5-6 weeks annual leave. Now how the fuck is that fraud?

I hope that some will be able to work from home, if they remain healthy for the 2 weeks.

It's possible that some of those in Spain right now may return after the current restrictions are rescinded, for the areas that they have visited. It could be a permitted country by Friday.

why though? when the chance of being virus free is just as high as the chance of having the virus (actually probably more) and the chance or having the virus in your body not yet detectable from the holiday is just the same as having the virus in your body not yet detectable from asda

people keep going on about the science and yet entirely ignoring the maths ... why are we assuming every single person allowed out in the world poses an immediate risk when something ridiculous like 4% of people are infected? why would we assume a negative test is a false negative from someone that just hasn’t had the virus long enough to detect it ... these people are returning from a beach holiday ... not some virus centre where they were bathed daily in virus particles

we are totally ignoring probability and heading straight for worst case scenario because we have now been programmed into irrational fear

a test at airport returning, provide your contact details, stay home until you receive a negative result and then if you start to feel unwell self isolate and inform the test and trace people should be more than sufficient

"When Transport Secretary Grant Shapps returns from his holiday in Spain , I expect he will be given the choice of 14 days in quarantine , or , a 30 minute press conference in the Downing Street garden explaining why the quarantine rules do not apply to him "

As a politician isn't he exempt from quarantine anyways.

If I was in his shoes though, I'd honestly just stay over there until spain moves back into the quarantine free zone

"Instead of quarantining arrivals from Spain why not use some of the unused testing capacity the government says they have.

Test on arrival then again after a week etc.

But they'd still need to quarantine after testing due to delay between infection & being detectable.

why though? when the chance of being virus free is just as high as the chance of having the virus (actually probably more) and the chance or having the virus in your body not yet detectable from the holiday is just the same as having the virus in your body not yet detectable from asda

people keep going on about the science and yet entirely ignoring the maths ... why are we assuming every single person allowed out in the world poses an immediate risk when something ridiculous like 4% of people are infected? why would we assume a negative test is a false negative from someone that just hasn’t had the virus long enough to detect it ... these people are returning from a beach holiday ... not some virus centre where they were bathed daily in virus particles

we are totally ignoring probability and heading straight for worst case scenario because we have now been programmed into irrational fear

a test at airport returning, provide your contact details, stay home until you receive a negative result and then if you start to feel unwell self isolate and inform the test and trace people should be more than sufficient "

"You can circumvent the 14 day quarantine, by simply stating that you went to Spain to have your eyes tested!

Job Done!

are we still on this childish bs? "

Yes! We can't meet, play etc. So might as well have a bit of banter and chat!
