Family Member who is in BBC Radio has been on London Oxford Street since early today and she says: 'Not seen a shop where people are not wearing them yet'.

She also saw a woman going into 'a famous chain' and was told by a doorman wear one or you are not going in'. She said that she had not had time to buy one. 'You have had two weeks'. Said he. She hrrrrmphd and left.

Also: Same chain. All the staff are wearing masks - she asked why and they said they had all agreed to set a 'Good Example'.

There's always going to be a section of the population that think they don't need to comply. It's funny when they come up against someone who won't let them get away with it

It was like a mask fashion show in tesco today, lots of bright colours and patterns, one lady had a mild anxiety with her scarf, but that was it

There are forms on the government Website that people can print out for exemption certs that shops will accept if they cannot wear a mask x

I went up to Makro today, they are wholesales shop for those who do not know. I had my mask but many others did not, found out it is not compulsory to wear masks in wholesales shops.

The staff also said its crazy as we do the same things as Tesco, and that sort of shop

If you are not wearing a mask because of health reasons, you do not have to produce a card or certificate to prove this, and you do not have to disclose the medical reason you do not have to wear a mask. This may cause confusion, and anger for some

I've been wearing a mask since COVID-19 started in the UK in January/February. And did I get some looks!

We have a box of disposable masks. I have a fabric one that I keep in my car. 2 more on the way as well. Its The New Normal.

Coronavirus: Major supermarkets refuse to enforce face mask rules despite police pleas

Sky news.

I see some folks are trying to push the narrative of heavy handed security playing the no mask no entry game on shop doors, that's not what sky are reporting and it's not what I experienced this morning.

To anyone who is getting worried I would advise you go to the gov Web site and download or print a mask exempt badge, just to be clear, you don't need to, and it's not law for you to, it covers everything from asthma to anxiety,

Nobody should be challenging folks on doors or in shops, however in these crazy times any thing can happen and having the badge is a good way to put an end any confrontation and politely and move on.

There are badges people can get if they are exempt from wearing a mask in public places. A visible badge to let people know.

I wouldn't judge someone who wasn't wearing a mask, there might be a non-visible reason why. As long as I've got mine on and I avoid as best I can, crack on. Its not MY job to police mask wearing.

Local corner shop chain had the mask sign up and had mine on but other people came in didn't even tho lots of old people on street outside wearing one.. A regular came in, said to assistant.. Forgot my mask and she said don't worry.. I'm not wearing one.. Even tho ice seen her wear one before

Masks have been compulsory in shops in Scotland for a couple of weeks and at first it was sporadic and non-mask wearers were pretty common, but now people largely all mask up. I imagine it'll end up the same south of the border as people realise its not a big deal.

I've switched to a once weekly grocery delivery I decided to do that when the compulsory masks was announced.

It's not right that my children who are exempt could face questioning so we just won't go near shops for the foreseeable.

They are readily available online now the madness has died down. No need to leave your house.

An alternative can be a scarf/shawl to wear over your nose and mouth to buy a mask(s) from a shop.

I suffer from asthma and when I feel it coming on always wear a mask for a couple of hours helps a lot, cant say I have found it makes it more difficult to breathe.

We can't stop morons being morons, but we can do our part and encourage others to do the same.

I'm masking, staying away from people, etc. I'm not helping the economy by sitting at home, but if we all distance hard where we can, we'll help the economy long term by being able to get back to normal sooner.

Went to my local shop and Asda earlier and the vast majority were wearing face coverings of some sort.

However, there's very few people who in reality couldn't wear a face covering of some sort. I work with a woman with severe asthma who has no problem with a mask, she just needed the right kind. Failing that you could use a face shield.

The are people who will have a very real problem with face coverings, such those with certain mental health problems.

She is exempt from wearing one at work in a nursing home.

So please stop making assumptions about her asthma.

She wears a face shield at work.

But it's not a problem as asda and sainsbury's are not enforcing the rule.

During my 7 hour shift in a retail environment we only had 2 customers who had forgotten to bring a mask with them. We have them a disposable one.

Staff wise, we all tried but after half an hour it was very, very hot, it actually made me feel sick. We don't have the luxury of air con or loads of fridges like grocery stores. Our company have said it's up to us if we wear one or not although they encourage us to do so.

We have carried out these studies for several common fabrics including cotton, silk, chiffon, flannel, various synthetics, and their combinations. Although the filtration efficiencies for various fabrics when a single layer was used ranged from 5 to 80% and 5 to 95% for particle sizes of 300 nm and 300 nm, respectively, the efficiencies improved when multiple layers were used and when using a specific combination of different fabrics. Filtration efficiencies of the hybrids (such as cotton–silk, cotton–chiffon, cotton–flannel) was 80% (for particles 300 nm) and 90% (for particles 300 nm). We speculate that the enhanced performance of the hybrids is likely due to the combined effect of mechanical and electrostatic-based filtration. Cotton, the most widely used material for cloth masks performs better at higher weave densities (i.e., thread count) and can make a significant difference in filtration efficiencies. Our studies also imply that gaps (as caused by an improper fit of the mask) can result in over a 60% decrease in the filtration efficiency, implying the need for future cloth mask design studies to take into account issues of “fit” and leakage, while allowing the exhaled air to vent efficiently. Overall, we find that combinations of various commonly available fabrics used in cloth masks can potentially provide significant protection against the transmission of aerosol particles.

However, there's very few people who in reality couldn't wear a face covering of some sort. I work with a woman with severe asthma who has no problem with a mask, she just needed the right kind. Failing that you could use a face shield.

The are people who will have a very real problem with face coverings, such those with certain mental health problems."

Different styles make a big difference I found. I made a few types and found which works OK for me.

I also saw shop customers with face shields and no mask. Seemed to work well.

Yep. I bought a fancy washable one with removable filters.

It was shit. Far to hot when on and the nose piece has removed most of the skin from the bridge of my nose.

The disposible white ones seem to work better.

I got one of the thin stretchy poundshop masks as a back up and they are good too. Need better ones for some closer scenarios. Agree about the nose bridge.

That is a loophole which no doubt will be exploited.

My medical requirements are none of your business. I went into lockdown over a week before it was enforced. I didn't leave my house for 2 months. Then only went out if I had to. Still I don't go out that often

I can't say anymore regarding the asthma I i don't suffer from it.

I agree the wearing a mask is just common sense however there are so many variables that can negate the use of one.

Just went into town to pick up a prescription and everybody in shops was wearing a face covering.

On the walk back to the car I saw a notice on a shop door,

‘ If you enter this shop not wearing a face covering we will have to take your temperature, unfortunately we only have rectal thermometers ‘

You make a fair point, there seems to be a cottage industry of people trying to find the many loopholes and inconsistencies in the rules that are there for yours and mine protection and health. (not saying there are some situations or individuals who are unable to) but some of the "reasons" are very much in the dog ate my homework mould.

You don't have to look very hard to find excuses if you want to. Well done to you if that makes you feel better. But equally you don't have to try very hard to wear one either.

This is what I did, wandering around at home to get used to it, I went through a fair few styles of facemask to find one I was comfortable in, a few made me feel quite suffocated as when I breathed in the were sucked towards my mouth but found I style I'm happy with and feel do much more comfortable shopping when wearing one.

I really do think it's trial and error to find what works, ultimately,the best thing you can do for yourself and others.

Being asthmatic is not an automatic exemption for not wearing a face mask which is probably why people are being challenged about it.

3. When you do not need to wear a face covering

In settings where face coverings are required in England, there are some circumstances, for health, age or equality reasons, where people are not expected to wear face coverings. She is under no obligation to tell you the reason why she doesn't wear a mask.

She can do what she likes with her own body.
