Covid testing

Folks,

Yesterday I went for a covid test. I wanted to share the process in case others are considering it. I have a chance to visit my elderly mother this week and whilst symptom free I wanted to make sure I didn't give anything to her. So.. Having heard the advert on the radio that testing is now open to everyone....

It took me a while to find what I needed on the Internet.. Completed the online form, pain free, was sent my confirmation qr code. I got offered a time slot in 15 minutes of me completing the online form. Raced along but arrived at 20.05 and was told it was closed. But the friendly chap told me I could return any time the next day with the same qr code. Which I did.

I arrived and was guided by someone in a high Viz jacket about every 20m...was offered the chance to do it myself or have someone else do it for me. The test itself is one q tip in the throat and one up the nose. I was processed and sent away all in less than 10 minutes. I got the results (negative) in less than 8 hours.

Now there are many things to be critical of our govt for... But have to say my experience of the testing process was first rate.

When I chose the test centre it said there were over 6000 test spaces available that day at that centre. When I was there I was one of only 2 cars being tested.

Good to see someone share their experience

I hope it encourages others to get tested if they are unsure if they have it.

I've given the govt a kicking over most of their choices and I stand by that.

But those employed by the govt engaged in providing services related to covid have for the most part been first rate.

Have you had advice upon the period from getting infected to when a test will show positive for having it? I know that symptoms can lag after getting infected, if people actually get any symptoms, but I can't remember how quickly after getting the infection a test can conclusively indicate whether you have it or not.

I've never used the drive thru's, in and out within ten minutes after gagging

The manager gets the email and I get the text result

On the gov website it gives 1 to 5 days after symptoms start. Of course that's no help for the 80 per cent of tests that are asymptomatic. Not sure if that answers your question though. Below is an extract from the notification mail I was sent though...

"Your coronavirus test result is negative. You did not have the virus when the test was done.

You may return to work if you’ve not had a fever for 48 hours and feel well. Talk to your employer first."

Mine was done just over a week ago.(It came back negative.) I wasn't given the choice of doing it myself as it was part of the pre-op process.

Swab around the back of the throat, absolutely fine. Swab up one nostril, not the most comfortable thing I've had done, especially as she went straight up the other nostril with it immediately after.

The nurse gave me a nosebleed with the swab.

I read, unfortunately I can't remember where, that some self-administered tests are coming back as negative as they're not being done correctly but who knows what's what with the info we're given at the moment.

I do know that nurses are asking you to sit on your hands as it's not a pleasant experience having that test..

There is a fairly good chance you would test negative when you are in fact infected. There have been cases of people in ICU having several negative tests and 1 positive just before they die. The tests are not as reliable as you may think.

The same is not true of positive tests. If they detect viral DNA then you are definitely infected.

You mean 2 separate q tips? I work on an nhs Mental Health ward and have had the inconvenient pleasure of the nose/throat assault, the instructions the nurses got is that it’s to be done with the same qtip - back of the throat and then up the nose. Apparently that’s the best chance of accurate result..

Have others had it done with 2 separate swabs? Hmm

Had a home test delivered 2 weeks ago, didn't even have a CE mark on it so i binned it, think it came from poundland

Well I didn't check to see if the kit they used on me was CE marked, and when I've been to be bandaged up for various injuries in the past, haven't checked the supplies used were CE marked... Kind of trust what they are using is good for me. End of the day its a sterile cotton bud swab.

Came via work as we're tested regularly. All the other kits I've had have had CE marks on them, think it may have been one of these kits the government have now stopped using today.

I've been having regular tests as part of a research projext5.. and I've yet to have to wait long. Always got same day tests.

So like you I've found it positive but omg I prefer to administer the test myself.... x

Thanks. I was just concerned for you to as fully understand the implications for any just acquired infection, as possible. Caring for someone, or visiting someone who is vulnerable or more at risk, carries a lot of potential concern. Hope all stays good
