There’s probably a few years in this

Most pandemics historically have lasted for a couple of years at least, and come to an end almost as quickly as they started. We are probably around 9 months into the current covid-19 pandemic. There’s a choice between minimising economic damage or new cases of covid-19, but I don’t believe we can do both. There’s around 300 different vaccines being developed across the world, and should one of them work, it will take a while to manufacture and distribute them to at least 60 percent of the world’s population, and that’s if they’ll willingly have this vaccine. The UK government already said it would not be mandatory to have this vaccine if they find one. Many people are saying they won’t have the vaccine because of how quickly it will have been developed with no data on long term effects, so herd immunity will probably come from a combination of vaccine immunity and natural immunity. I just think we will end up arriving at a point where governments around the world weigh up how many more would die from the economic fallout vs the disease itself, and I suspect the economic fallout would kill many more than the disease. There are difficult times ahead, but we will get through it I’m pretty sure. It’s just a shame this pandemic arrived when there was already growing political instability in many western countries, partially caused by Chinese and Russian disinformation campaigns on the internet, and also by massive debts in many countries. The UK’s debt to GDP has increased from 85% in January to more than 105% now, and add in a 20% reduction in our economy this year that figure is surely expected to go up even further. I suppose we can be glad that interest rates are at an all time low or we’d already be up shit creek. Anyway, let’s keep our fingers crossed that this pandemic comes to an end sooner rather than later.
