Unfortunately some people think it’s just in the streets, appears they are in competition with the McDonalds rubbish now. Probably best to pop them in your bin at home. We have the ones you can boil wash so don’t have the worry.

The OP has asked a sensible question. Alot of the general public do not have a clue about how to take off a face mask correctly, let alone gloves, therefore contaminating themselves.

So come on then educate us all!

How to remove a face mask

Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer before touching the mask.Avoid touching the front of the mask. The front of the mask is contaminated. Only touch the ear loops/ties/band.Follow the instructions below for the type of mask you are using.

Face Mask with Ear loops: Hold both of the ear loops and gently lift and remove the mask.

Face Mask with Ties: Untie the bottom bow first then untie the top bow and pull the mask away from you as the ties are loosened.

Face Mask with Bands: Lift the bottom strap over your head first then pull the top strap over your head.

Throw the mask in the trash. Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

Does that cover it

The point is.

If we have to wear masks .so be it.

But thay are not fashion items.

Thay are to protect us ,so we are told.

Ask a NHS worker how long thay can wear the same mask ??.

The point I'm trying to make is.

If we have to wear a mask.

Let's not fuck it up how we despose of them.

The government say wear a mask to trap and contain the virus as to stop it spreading in a confined space. If so it then has to be classed as a bio hazard waste and bins need to be provided, putting in your pocket and using it again just shows what bullshit this is. I was in the pharmacy earlier and a lady came in with her mask only covering her mouth, pulled it down to talk to the pharmacist, sat down on a chair, took her masks off and put it on the chair next to her. When she stood up to leave I asked her if she was going to just leave it there or take her rubbish with her, she huffed and puffed about how the pharmacy can get rid of it and that they have gloves so they can pick up for her, I pointedly stared at her until she took it with her. That is for people who have the virus ,

For masks specifically the World Health Organisation (WHO) says you should dispose of a mask as soon as it is damp. To remove the mask: clean your hands first; remove it from behind with the ear or head strap (do not touch the front of the mask); pull the mask away from your face; discard immediately in a closed bin; wash hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

When removing a face covering:

wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser before removing

only handle the straps, ties or clips

do not share with someone else to use

if single-use, dispose of it carefully in a residual waste bin and do not recycle

wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitiser once removed

Wash them according to laundry advice or, if home made, according to the fabric.

If you have disposables, consider the harm in the environment and think about getting a reusable one.

Plastic masks are already in the oceans and will be for centuries.

"Do we have to be told how to do every bloody thing these days ffs. What happened to people's brains & common sense?

The OP has asked a sensible question. Alot of the general public do not have a clue about how to take off a face mask correctly, let alone gloves, therefore contaminating themselves.

So come on then educate us all!"

OK...

Dressing:

Sterilise hands

Bring face mask up to the face with the blue side facing outwards and the metal strip at the top of the mask. Place loops behind ears, adjust mask so the top of the mask is on the bridge of your nose and the base is under your chin. Find the metal bar at the top of the mask with your two index fingers and then move them apart applying pressure so the strip fits a good seal/fit around the nose.

Put gloves on.

Avoid touching your face or mask as this may introduce infectious material and/or reduce the masks fit and effectiveness.

Removal:

Place 2 fingers inside the wrist of glove 1... roll it back on itself so it’s inside out in your gloved hand... repeat the process with glove 2 and turn it inside out over the original glove... carefully place in bin.

Sterilise hands!

Place fingers behind the ear elastics of the face mask, lift over ears and bring the mask directly forward and drop in a bin.

Preferably wash hands with soap and water, if not... sterilise

There you go x

You take of your mask, throw it in a bin , then wash your hands "

Actually... the last thing you ever do is throw. If PPE is potentially contaminated then ‘GENTLY’ is a very key word... otherwise you risk infectious particles in your immediate atmosphere.

Also you’re (or Wikipedia is) wrong on tied masks... you don’t untie as this again agitates the mask whilst it’s on your face posing and infection risk. instead place two fingers under each side of the mask and push outwards away from the face. The ties are designed to snap and you effectively ‘flick’ the mask into the bin.

And yes... my specialist subject is Doffing x

"Unfortunately in the real world, and not the cyber perfect world, I've seen plenty of folks in town with same filthy snot ridden scarfs wrapped around their heads. "
Have you ever wondered if your visceral assumtions about other people's cleanliness are an issue you should discuss with a professional? I try not to suggets people are obsessional, but in your case you might want to ask yourself why this matters so much to you, and why your comments are so full of hyperbolic language.

I’ve seen loads at the roadside, along with surgical gloves. So I guess they have the same instructions that you have on the side of Red Bull cans - once finished this beverage, simply throw away through the car window.

Place in a bag (nappy bags work) and place in your bin at home. However if your business collection is due in the next 72 hours you should not put them in the bin but hold them until it’s emptied

I have wondered this too. You only need four masks and can keep wearing them in rotation.

Mine is washable, so washed after use at 60 degrees.

There's no study that proves this and it could be dangerous to tell people to do it.

Maybe there should be a study of a masked shopper touching the mask 30+ times during a shopping afternoon, of mask to hand to object germ trail around the shops.

Fabric ones can be washed, but paper ones cannot be reused.

Paper mouth & nose covers should be disposed of when they get damp or are touched to pull down from the face because of contamination

Why, it's better they touch a mask than pick their nose or sneeze on the veggies

"Just a thought

Considering thay could be full of covid.

Just chuck them in the recycling.

"

Dispose of in a closed bin. If your looking for advice please check the World Health Organisation (WHO) website which will guide you on all types of face masks, how to wear, wash and dispose of correctly.

I've seen plenty of them in the gutters, in bushes and hanging from trees in the past week.

The scum of the earth will dispose of them where ever they want.

Nearly as bad as people picking up their dog's dirt in a plastic bag and then launching it into the undergrowth.

If you have coronavirus the mask you wear will be full of the virus from the moisture in your breath when you breath out. If you put them in your bin you open up a risk to a whole raft of people. A lot of waste, including paper has to be sorted by hand by people on minimum wage. There are also the bin collectors and the maintenance and cleaning crews at waste recycling centres as well as the sorters all put at increased risk because of paper face masks put in the bin.

I think the OP has raised a very good point. We need to consider the implications of our actions on other people.

Studies and scientific evidence...do me a favour. If I had waited for that I wouldn't have been wearing one for the last 4 months...and I'm saying what I do out of my informed research for myself...and not telling others to do it as it's up to them with all the expertise on here
