Face masks compulsory

So is it true what I am hearing on social media about having to wear a mask compulsory when people in sports and not wearing masks 22 footballers running around close to one another ? At the end of the day day if you've got it you'll get it a horrible way to look at it but surely.

The reason it is going to be compulsory in shops and public transport, Hospitals ect is because a lot of people don't have a choice but to use these places.

Nobody needs to go to the pub or play football if they don't feel safe but you do need to be able to access basic goods and medical treatment.

Lots of people on the buses and trams still do not wear one

This is very true it's not being enforced on public at all and I noticed even the staff at the tube stations aren't all wearing them.

I think the hope is that it will become socially unacceptable to not ware one.

And there in lies the problem...the mental spike of self harm etc is already through the roof..this will push it higher...and I am already having to face my own future...one that may well be much shorter than I thought.

I think we need to realise that countries like Malta only lost 10 people over covid-19 I know what people will say it's a small country but even so so only those 10 people is quite an achievement

Maybe they were sensible and stopped everyone coming into the country? Unlike ours who allowed people to come in and not even get tested or quarantined

Masks only prevent you from passing it on, not from catching it. Most people touch their faces more wearing masks, and wear the same mask over and over, touching it regularly. So you pick up the virus on your hands, touch your mask repeatedly, then touch your face.

What it does do is stop you breathing and coughing the virus all over others, but it still can't stop you touching ever surface.

The problem is this.

Who's going to enforce it? Not enough police, and for whatever reasons, many, probably the most likely to ignore rules, have no respect for police.

So how much time and effort would enforcing it take police away from their normal jobs? Plus the amount of kick offs leading to use of force and lick ups.

Bus drivers ain't enforcing it neither will ship staff.

Private security have the same problem as police but with out the tazer, gas and flickomatichittingsticks.

True, but I do think face nappies can give people a false sense of security. I've seen people wearing them coughing and sneezing into them instead of putting a hand or elbow in the way. Surely this isn't a good thing

Masks reduce transmission.

Just cover your face. Be considerate of others. It's not hard.

I'm all for it, but I don't know how it will be policed. On the underground in the last few weeks, I've seen loads of people take their masks off as soon as they're through the barriers, and the police seem to be exempt from wearing masks down there too. I'm not sure they're exempt from getting the virus though

I can’t get my head round why people don’t want to wear a mask?

It helps stop transmission that’s a good thing. So why not wear a mask?

Yes, such oppression in attempting to limit transmission of a virus. This is exactly the same as 1984...

I had my first experience of wearing a mask the other day (broken ankle so a lovely trip to A&E was taken). I suffer with bad PTSD and I will fully hold my hands up and say wearing a mask gave me a huge panic attack (PTSD for a lot of reasons, but one being closely linked to almost being suffocated)

Not sure how this is going to work for people like me that run the risk of finding it nearly impossible to put one on

Talk to your GP about it xx

We should protect each other, including anyone with genuine medical need to not wear a mask.

I’ve been free to choose to help protect others by wearing a face mask since it became clear it helped reduce transmission. I made that decision 8 weeks ago. I’ve gradually seen more people choose to do the same. The government making it mandatory only helps that process. We have been free to choose to help reduce transmission and protect others, now those who don’t wish to choose to do so might get a fine. I feel freer based on the belated government decision to go into shops or on public transport with reduced risk.

Yes the first time I wore it I saw two other shoppers wearing one. I wore it because it was right for me to do so. I bought some really nice masks - 3 layers - made by a local woman. Easily washable at 60 degrees and feel ok to wear. They aren’t a muzzle to me.

I make my choices based on what I feel is right to do.

I bought masks ten weeks ago, although until last week was housebound with Covid throughout that time.

I get plenty of dirty looks and people crossing the street to avoid me

I'm quite happy for idiots to think I'm an idiot, to suffer a bit of stigma, and to deal with the icky feeling wearing a mask brings, if I can do my bit to stop the spread of an illness we know very little about, including long term consequences.

I'm such a coward, enduring minor discomfort to protect people around me

If you think the government is unfairly infringing your civil liberties during the pandemic then you have every right to take the government to court, and possibly the European Court of Human Rights, to argue your case.

Laws, in the UK anyway, are not set in stone and can be challenged through judicial procedure. That is your right.

These arguments remind me somewhat of the debate surrounding face coverings for religious reasons.

Is there a difference because one comes from governemnt and the other from religion?

Both seem to say you must cover your face, not to protect yourself but to keep others safe.

Yes a deliberately confrontational post and not necessarily one I believe. Just food for thought.

I look at this like vaccination. Everyone who can be vaccinated should, to protect those who can't. (I'm not interested in anyone's anti vax stuff right now, let me have my analogy)

I fully sympathise. In my old career we would have to periodically wear and qualify on respirators and one of my oppos would point black refuse to have it over their face. It would cause complete panic.

I'd love a quid for every time you've pasted that bollocks in a thread. That’s just your opinion but if muzzles where any good they would have bought them in from the start , seems people don’t like others options which are the overwhelming majority opinion otherwise when shopping most would already be wearing there muzzle "

If the majority jumped off a cliff without a bungee cord, would you do it too?

The science and global supply chain has changed. Masks are now recognised as effective. The position changed as evidence grows.

I'll happily muzzle my germs and protect my community.

"Well 1984 has finally arrived Government must be so pleased that the people so easily give up there civil liberties

I feel freer based on the belated government decision to go into shops or on public transport with reduced risk. well you have definitely been in the minority wearing the muzzle , went shopping yesterday less than 10 per cent wearing a muzzle and out of those 40 percent did not even have them over there nose

Why does putting cloth over your face scare you?

Why are you so happy to when the overwhelming majority of people don’t want a muzzle on there faces

First of all, it's not a muzzle, it's a mask. There's a difference.

Scientific opinion has changed and the advice has followed. Many countries have high percentage figures for people wearing masks and reopened way before us and are further forward with getting back to normal.

If you don’t want to wear one then don’t - stay at home

I'll quite happily take the reframing on.

I'll have my liberty to spew germs muzzled. I'll wear my face nappy. I consider it my duty to do so. If that makes me a liberal snowflake, then let's have more liberal snowflakes. Let's beat this thing.

What's just my opinion, I haven't voiced one.

So, to masks. Now that's not an opinion, it's a scientific fact.

And the great thing about science, it's doesn't care about your opinion or frankly daft rhetoric about civil liberties.

It'll just kill you.

What exactly is your arguement for not wearing a mask (logical and coherent please) ? And why call them a muzzle which implies it is being used to shut people up?

People probably aren't wearing masks so much because they are not used to doing or thinking about doing it. It will, in time, become second nature to wear a mask like making sure you've got your phone and wallet before you leave the house.

IMO citing 1984 is like citing the Nazis - lazy trolling

Other small sacrifices that help protect people. Obey the road rules and the law.

Democracy doesn't mean "I can do whatever I like". It means the laws are set by people elected by the people.

Public health requires everyone to pitch in. Wear a mask or stay home. The science is clear.

what

If you genuinely don't want to or won't wear a mask or face covering in shops and anywhere else required by regulation, then don't. We are in a democracy and it is your right to choose not to wear one but it is also your responsibility when the consequences for doing so are applied to you.

When seat belt wearing first became mandatory a lot of the same arguments were made. Most people only wore them because you could be fined if you didn't.

You have a choice - wear a mask as instructed by the government in order to protect lives or don’t wear one and stay away from people in order to protect lives. How you want to protect other people is up to you

The majority of the world drive on the right side of the road. Most people think that's the right thing to do.

Go ahead and drive on the right side of the road in the UK...

Or maybe consider that in the unusual circumstances here, you shouldn't do that because you'd cause harm.

I think they are giving time for resistance to making the behavioural change to reduce and more people to voluntarily start using them before that date. At least that’s why I would do it if I was making the decision.

Our government are a bit slow on the up take and only make the tougher decisions when they feel there is enough popular support. The scientific evidence was available weeks ago. There were concerns about impact on PPE supplies but this decision would not have impacted PPE as we are just expected to wear a face covering. Having said that, the job of educating the public that the mask is to protect others rather than yourself is a challenge as we can see from these threads.

I got mine from a company called The Big Bloomers Company. They're not much to look at but they've got an antimicrobial patch. Lady V London do cotton ones (what most people seem to have) in vintage patterns. Etsy have lots. I'm sure plenty of others do too.

Look for at least cotton and a double layer, elasticated edges so you can fit it around your mouth and nose securely.

They feel icky to wear but it's safe in the overwhelming majority of circumstances.

"So is it true what I am hearing on social media about having to wear a mask compulsory when people in sports and not wearing masks 22 footballers running around close to one another ? At the end of the day day if you've got it you'll get it a horrible way to look at it but surely. I dont get why they have to pick a certain day to make it compulsory. Why not from today or even better from the begining are we at more risk from next week? Strange government

Because not everyone has masks at home id imagine... yeah fair point there but I still dont get why it wasnt compulsory in the begining. Guaranteed there will be yet another shortage cos everyones gonna rush out and grab all they can. I best get dressed and get some lol. X

Before washable masks became a thing. Lots of places do washable masks now, usually £5-10 each. Do you know who sells the washable ones? Xx

Ebay "

Shop staff have no choice but to be surrounded by lots of people every day. Mask wearing public can give them a little reassurance and I'd hope, retain their health.

You can get washable masks for a couple of pounds and putting them on is minor effort. It may help to keep infections lower than they were, at a time when so many things are being opened up, with increasing risk levels.

"Well 1984 has finally arrived Government must be so pleased that the people so easily give up there civil liberties

I feel freer based on the belated government decision to go into shops or on public transport with reduced risk. well you have definitely been in the minority wearing the muzzle , went shopping yesterday less than 10 per cent wearing a muzzle and out of those 40 percent did not even have them over there nose

Why does putting cloth over your face scare you? Why are you so happy to when the overwhelming majority of people don’t want a muzzle on there faces "

Because I am a responsible citizen who wants to limit the spread rather than feel I'm better than everyone else and the rules don't apply to me.

I think it’s just to give people sufficient time to get face coverings. If they had made it tomorrow, lots of people might not have them. It was the same here in Scotland. Everyone in my local Tesco were wearing one apart from people wearing lanyards that said they were exempt for medical reasons. I don’t believe it’s a “muzzle”, nor does it dehumanise you? It’s quite fun wondering what guys look like under the masks

I think it's because there needs to be time for people and businesses to buy them.

Also shielding stops at the end of July, I heard an interview with someone from the sage group on the radio and its also been done to help protect those who will no longer be shielding.

"Masks only prevent you from passing it on, not from catching it.

True, but I do think face nappies can give people a false sense of security. I've seen people wearing them coughing and sneezing into them instead of putting a hand or elbow in the way. Surely this isn't a good thing"

Judging by the last person to be interviewed on the local TV station, he said he is not going to wear a face mask, as he doesn't believe in COVID. I know there are always a few that think this way, not sure why he was added to the back of the report though.

Sorry has anyone here actually worn a mask for a prolonged period of time doing any form of manual work? If you have then you’d know that it is in fact dangerous to undertake sport or physical exertion with a mask as it restricts your ability to breathe properly, hence why people who wear them a lot are regulated, and have restrictions on how long they can wear them before they have to change masks/ change filters.

Wearing a mask is incredibly draining and massively slows down your ability to function ‘normally’ as it is.

If anyone disputes that feel free to dm me to discuss why your social media generated opinion is more correct that actual real world experience

Not really .

Severe asthma sufferers would be high risk.

But other asthma sufferers not so much.

In fact my mrs sailed though the virus while I struggled with it fof 3 weeks.

She has asthma.

But when if comes to wearing a mask she cant breath and gets a panic attack.

She is exempt from wearing one at work.

Hate to say it but asthma sufferers arent affected by medical grade masks and having a panic attack wesring one is not an excuse to not wear one. This is bigger than individual liberty and choice. People need to find a way to get over a face mask fear. Any therapist would advise the way through it is to actually wear one. CBT.

Excuse me? Are you in the shoes of asthma sufferers? Ristrict my breathing for too long by covering my mouth and I'll go in to a panic attack, can't even wear a scarf in winter, so that's a ridiculous statement to say people need to get over it.

Can tell you've never suffered with asthma at all. It's not the air getting through at all, it's the feeling of being restricted with having your mouth covered, can set off an asthma attack.

Thats simply nonsense. What you are describing has nothing to do with asthma and is patronising to people who suffer with asthma. Asthma isnt a psychological condition. If stress is a trigger fine but the fact you are panicking because a medical grade mask is over your mouth even though you know it has 0 affect on your ability to breath isnt justification for spraying covid19 all around you. Practice wearing one at home and get over it. People are dying.

Never heard of online shopping or people getting food for you? If you can't follow the rules of wearing a mask then find alternatives. It's harsh I know it is. But it's for everyone's safety not just the individuals with asthma.

The guidelines state I'm exempt with asthma, so I am following the rules as you put it

Xx

Ebay cheers x"

If you're going to pay £10 for a piece of cloth from ebay, you may as well spend £20 and get a virustatic shield (remove space and add .com for their website)

They're a company in Manchester who have spent the last 10 years developing it for 10 years, since sars, and it's a biotech coating that replicates the throat lining and captures viruses, well 96% of them... It's been tested as effective against covid in a independent lab. Good for 50 hours before hand washing up to 3 times giving 200 hours of use. It's a snood more than a mask.

They're actually now testing the protein they're using for use in humans as a inhaler to protect the lungs from covid.

Just googled it a bit and there seems to be pages of results from other places on the success of the protein so far.

I've got one, been forgetting to wear it as often as I've been wearing it, I have worn it to the shop the last few times I've been since lockdown has been relaxed. If we wear them and they work, it's a bonus, if we wear them and they don't work, we've lost a few £, if we don't wear them when we could and it's proved they worked, we're going to look like utter cnuts...

Children under 11 and those with certain disabilities will be exempt.

The list of exemptions has not yet been published, but the rules for face masks on public transport exempt anyone who cannot wear one "because of any physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability", who would experience "severe distress" from doing so, or relies on lip reading, among other reasons.

From BBC.co.uk

Ive had 2 panic attacks in my life. They were horrid. They werent irrational phobia driven though. Severe mental health issue is unlikely to be "oh no a mask". Its a simple phobia to tackle. If i was told hold a spider or people woukd die then id get on with the spider holding.

"Sorry has anyone here actually worn a mask for a prolonged period of time doing any form of manual work? If you have then you’d know that it is in fact dangerous to undertake sport or physical exertion with a mask as it restricts your ability to breathe properly, hence why people who wear them a lot are regulated, and have restrictions on how long they can wear them before they have to change masks/ change filters.

Wearing a mask is incredibly draining and massively slows down your ability to function ‘normally’ as it is.

If anyone disputes that feel free to dm me to discuss why your social media generated opinion is more correct that actual real world experience"

Absolute rubbish! I have tested this out by way of a face covering and saturation monitor. Saturation’s of oxygen in the blood remained the same with and without the face covering on. It’s just another excuse people are using to get out of wearing one.

End of the day as adults we have the mental capacity to make our own choices I don’t buy excuses or reasoning for not wearing them they are a dam site more comfy than a ventilator.

"Thats simply nonsense.

Wow, ignorance is bliss. Think you need to gen up on asthma mate, seriously misguided views. "

Asthma suffers are not exempt unless your GP has advised you not to wear one so if you chose not to you get fined.

No it doesn't you need to look it up.

It has to be severe asthma and you are going to need a letter from your doctor. If you do not wear one you are risking a fine.

I do a manual job in a hospital. As do the porters and the cleaning staff. I have wear a mask all day. They reckon your breathing is restricted by 30%. They make you hot and tired.

People have been fired for not wearing a mask while in the hospital. I've seen people abusing security staff because they have to wear a mask. In the hospital.

I'm not happy wearing a mask but I understand the nessecity. So I do it without complaint.

At some points I'm so used to it that I forget it's on.

Not wearing a mask is like fucking a stranger without a condom. Aids is also a virus.

If this is true, I imagine more people than just those actually exempt, saying they are.

I would just like to say that I have worked in operating theatres for 37 years so have worn face masks regularly. You do not restrict your breathing or breath in carbon dioxide if you are wearing a cloth or simple face mask. We have had to wear FPP3 respirator masks during the crisis and yes these are horrible to wear but these are only recommended in a clinical setting when aerosol generating procedures are happening. Members of the public should not be using these as they will make you feel claustrophobic. Please if everyone wears a face covering it will reduce the spread of this awful virus massively.

This is now reaching the point of being a farce. Hancock has just said no plans for offices as you spend a long time with people and masks don't work the way they do for a quick contact in a shop. Despite the fact that this contradicts the science that proximity v time increases risk and is the basis for all other advice and mitigations.

Just so I have this right:

Needed in a shop, but not in a bar, restaurant, gym or cinema where I spend far longer and now no need in the workplace.

Following the science?

"The reason it is going to be compulsory in shops and public transport, Hospitals ect is because a lot of people don't have a choice but to use these places.

Nobody needs to go to the pub or play football if they don't feel safe but you do need to be able to access basic goods and medical treatment."
