Eating out in restaurants and pubs

I just seen on the news about Government scheme trying to get people to eat out more. I love eating out but I really don't want to go to either if you can to sign in as I can't afford to take 14 days off work being self employed because someone else has covid and came in contact with me even though I had covid already but haven't had antibody test. Anyone else feel the same way?

I got to pubs or restaurants to enjoy a meal and relax. I can't enjoy that experience without feeling worried, anxious or stressed. So until levels of cases come further down I won't be visiting pubs and restaurants.

hmmm it's a tricky one I have to say as I'd be in the same boat as you regarding self employment but...

feel like we should be supporting local businesses so I guess yes we will,

but we'll be choosing the ones that have the most distance between tables as they're

trying their best and will need the income most as they can't fit as many in

Not really a fan of eating out (I can almost hear the Benny Hill music there... ) but have been buying food and building materials from local suppliers rather than the usual national ones, so I still feel I've been 'doing my bit' to support local businesses.

Yes, I feel the same. It will encourage more people to go out, which is a good thing, but puts me off even more even though I'd love to have a meal out again.

I also can't afford the ssp should i have to self isolate because someone tested positive!

We decided to let the guinea pigs in first and see what happens.

Leaving it until next month before going out to eat and that's while we are away.

If I do eat out, it will will in a pub garden, there's no way I'm sharing indoor space with people I don't know at the moment.

I feel the same. Though to be honest, I order from a cracking independent local Mexican takeaway at least twice a month so I'm still supporting a local business.

We have had a couple of takeaways when I can't be bothered to cook, slightly different to going out for a sit down meal tho

Yes we've done the same and that's not usually an option round here so was worth it just for the novelty value

I went to a restaurant in a garden centre last weekend, no booking required, but had to give details in case of covid breakout, the restaurant was well laid out, about 60% capacity to normal, plus had outdoor seating, i preferred it like that compared to pre-covid when it was a bit too packed.

But if i was self employed not sure if i would have risked it.

Very true. But I personally don't feel safe with eating out still so I'm doing the next best thing.

The financial support to start in August, is perhaps enough time to learn how infection rates are locally, why places are signed up for the scheme and what their layout etc is like. I think it will be chains more than smaller places that could do with the help.

For the savings, I'd prefer instead to eat where I want to, rather than the more limited range of places signed up.

I've not eaten out yet.

Its up to an order of £10... So just order 12 things off the menu 12 times :P

I'd like to go out, so long as the place isn't packed.

I don't like busy places when there isn't a plague, let alone now.

I went out for an Indian meal on Sunday.

The tables were set out in little booths, so ideal for social distancing.

No details were taken though.

Been to a toby carver today. Just us 2. Only one persons details were taken. People were sat well apart from each other. table service only until you paid then you went to the bar. And 1 way system round the pub. Cant see how it would work if it was a busy time though.

I’m sure if you try eating out at restaurants the security might chuck you out. Unless you sneak into the loos or find a very quiet corner.

It’s the same with blowjobs.

I order from some local places too. Very jealous I'd love a local Mexican restaurant to order from, sadly none near me.

as everyone has the track and trace app installed on their phone, can the government just use gps to show up who was near eachother?

It's almost impossible to find restaurant quality food from a takeaway. I'd actually say it's totally impossible as restaurant food dosnt travel. While being delivered it's continuing to cook. I was a chef and anything on the pass for more that 4 mins was binned and redone. Food is an art.

Restaurants doing social distanced and hygienic sittings should provide a break from the stress of this lockdown for a lot of people.

And if you have already had the virus you shouldn't have to worry if someone else shows positive in the place you were eating. There is no real evidence you can get it twice or be a carrier/spreader for the virus after you develop the antibodies you have after recovering from the infection.

**“..... And if you have already had the virus you shouldn't have to worry if someone else shows positive....”**

There is no proof to support that statement.

There is no conclusive scientific evidence (yet) on the issue of immunity.

There is no evidence yet that if you’ve had it once you won’t get it again. And even if you have any immunity at all, we don’t know how long that immunity lasts for.

The second issue is to do with track & trace. If there is an outbreak in a particular restaurant, some people could be asked to self isolate for 14 days.

For people who are self employed like myself & the OP, it will lead to a loss of income for us. So it’s not just a health risk we are concerned about, there is a financial risk too.

I’m not suggesting that people shouldn’t go to restaurants, just saying people have different circumstances which will in turn dictate the decisions they make.

In order to support my local restaurants, I’ll order takeaway for now as I said before. I know a takeaway doesn’t taste as good as eating in, but the taste of the food will certainly not be given priority over my health and wealth.

The Texas Medical Association has produced a chart of everyday activities and ranked them in terms of the risk of Covid-19 infection. Unfortunately restaurants are ranked pretty high up. You can see the list here:

Im in the same mind set as you, just done 12 weeks in isolation. Would love to go out for a meal with friends, but don't fancy having to go back in to lockdown. So will leave it for a few weeks.

Far too much panic on here

Went away for the weekend last weekend. 120 room hotel had only 20 rooms occupied and the pub and the restaurant that we ate in were only accepting pre booked diners. No standing drinking at the bar either. Both eating places had well spaced tables, one way systems and plenty of hand sanitizer available

Had to provide contact details - not a problem for me

The hotel in particular was really disappointed by the level of bookings given all the work they'd put in

The economy really needs our collective help at the moment - the risk really is minimal if you go to a well run establishment and not a rammed drinker

Oh....and the mini golf on Sunday was brilliant

Used to love going out to eat however I have seen how much money I can save by not doing this and cooking at home or grabbing a take away every now and then.

I'm still not 100 sure it I am ready to go back into that kind of environment, while I would like to think it's safe enough, I've also spent since march pretty much the whole time indoors avoiding this all so maybe I need to get over this fear.

We can't hide away forever. There would be nothing left if we don't get back to careful normal. We need exposure in controlled bursts or we will never ever be able to socialize. Now for some of us that's not an issue but we are a social species. It's how we reproduce and thrive. Those growing up shouldn't be expected to isolate forever. And do t think about relying on a vaccine. It's not comming. There has never been a vaccine for a Corona virus and the last virus we destroyed and almost eliminated world wide was polio. We need to build resistance to this so we should be looking at treating the symptoms not the virus itself. The common cold would be devastating without generations of adaptive resistance that we have had encoded into our genome offer countless generations and countless mutations of the original cold virus. Now it just makes you feel crap for a few days.

I'm not saying we should have covid parties and all get it over with at the same time but we do need to stop cowering in fear of something that is now part of our world. It's here and we will all get it at some point. It's how we pace the infection that matters

You need to accept that others have their fears regardless of yours! We may want to be carefree but our minds wont let us, for example I will definitely not be stepping foot inside a cinema!

I've been shopping online for years and will continue to do so, the high street has been declining for at least the last 10 years so you can't blame Covid for that, but people need to respect others and how they wish to emerge from all of this. You can't force or shame them we all have our own insecurities.
