Second wave

Apologies if this subject has been done to death, but I couldn't find it with a quick forum search.....

I'm not longer following the virus online, but am interested in what people believe about a second wave of infection.

Do you think there will be one?

When do you think it will be?

Also, how long do you think the people in the know will have the information before they let us know?

I don’t think a second wave but more of a steady trickle because we are aware of it now but until there is a vaccine it will keep going.

Deaths will diminish only because the most at risk will keep safer and treatments get more effective as time flies on.

I for one would not be booking any holidays abroad for a while because the chances are the R rate will increase and more holidays will get cancelled losing deposits

I've booked one for December so that was part of the reason for me asking.

I only paid what I could afford to lose though.

We already have all the information that we need, its what we do with this knowledge that will make the difference.

Goodness

Not exactly surprising though.

I was at my local bingo club on Saturday. It was packed out. The staff did their best with social distancing, but people kept forgetting and not following signage, rules etc.

I wondered then how long it would be til they closed that back down

No, I don't think it's going away

Looking at success rate of recent (15 years or so) vaccines , I am pretty certain there won't be one.

I also think it will be here for years to come AND believe that a second wave will come.

However that isnt what I asked in my op

Yep I agree with this. We have probably had the initial wave when the virus arrived, now it has changed to specific areas where population density dictactes the spread.

You could say Leicester are on a second wave however if you compare this to Scotland who are still on Lockdown the results are completely different.

I would say a second wave is when the virus rate matches or exceeds the confirmed cases documented.

I think the sooner we stop thinking in waves and just understand that its now in the population the better. With waves people look for opportunities of "normal" which will then trigger more infections. If we understand that its here and keep doing the right things infections will be minimised.

The continued spread of the virus in meat packing factories (low temperature, damp atmosphere) suggests that yeah there will be a second wave in winter.

Studies on tons of similar viruses show that cold damp conditions increase transmission of a virus for reasons not fully understood.

I just hope people don’t politicise it when it happens! Because if it happens it’ll be nothing to do with the government, it’s just nature.

I'm not looking for normal, I'm relatively unaffected by how things are now. I just want as much notice as possible of a future lockdown, which I suppose needs a chrystal ball.

Depending on the weather - October/November we’ll start seeing an uptick.

If we go into lockdown or not depends on the treatments we have by then. I’m pretty confident we’ll have at least one other drug by that point

I think it’s inevitable that there will be a second wave/spike, call it what you will. The virus wasn’t defeated, it was controlled because the public were not mixing as we used to. Now Pubs and Resturants are open then more people will be closer to more people and the virus will be passed again. What will be interesting is how much emphasis the Gvt will put on the Economy vs Health and which will come out on top.

As for holidays, I have a couple of hotels booked in The Canary’s but I’m not overly confident about going. Not sure what the Hotels snd Resorts will be like, and currently I’m not desperate to get in a tin can and breath the same air repeatedly for 4 hours or so.

They all made a conscious choice to go to the pub. If they catch it then they have nobody to blame but themselves.

There will be repetitive peaks and troughs in infection levels and calling any of them waves may or may not be helpful. We must do the right things as a society and individually to minimise the damages done to lives, whatever the label being put on the trend.

No, because there wasn't even a first wave.

The excess deaths occurred post lockdown, all deaths were recorded as C-19 deaths regardless, blankwt DNR notices and the withdrawal of treatment for those with serious illnesses make the C-19 death rate seem bad.

Second wave is all about thought control & conditioning.

There will always be a delay from catching to dieing and many didn't take lockdown seriously. However, you are talking about state sponsored murder...I assume you have proof.

Once winter comes round and the virus can remain viable in the environment for longer periods it might not be a wave but a tsunami

.

It seems only about 10% of the population have been infected and are showing antibodies which would mean 90% of the population are still susceptible. There is possibly some positive news though... recent evidence that some groups of people have immunity to this virus though other immune response mechanisms. It remains unclear what proportion of the population have this natural T cell immunity, it is much harder to identify than testing for antibodies.

It'll make a huge difference as the transmission is "occurring extensively" by human to human contact.

Indeed and studies suggest most have immunity from catching it again for 2-5 months so by the winter people could be re-infected

It all started in one pocket, now it’s spread across the globe. The virus still exists across the UK. We are a mobile population, even during lockdown virus was getting moved from region to region. What is going to contain the virus within pockets?

That doesn't stop it spreading due to deliveries, people moving around during and j before lockdown. I know someone who left Leicester just before the lockdown started. There is no guarantee they haven't been spreading the virus here in Bristol as they have no symptoms so far.

The first wave was exactly like that though. Pockets that popped up everywhere and then spread around local areas. It didn't hit everywhere so it will depend on how fast it's pickup up on. Hopefully as guidelines are already in place it will be easier to contain.

I know people that were convinced they had had covid the end of November. Both tested negative for anti bodies. One of them has subsequently come down with a mild case , thankfully, of covid and they have tested positive for it too. It is very unlikely that covid was in the uk much before the first confirmed uk case at the end of January as nothing, even RNA, has been picked up in historical samples from then. Other viruses can have similar symptoms as covid, yes even flu, pretty much all of these viruses are thankfully less deadly than covid.

We’ve also known of about 5 people who if you go by the symptoms most definitely had it around Christmas time, and another who had similar symptoms in October, and he ordered a test when they became available and yes it showed that antibodies where present.

There’ll be mini waves but it is true that the vast majority of people will only get minor symptoms not that different to a “normal” cold. So the question isn’t “will there be a second wave”, it is “what is the relevance of a second wave”.

We’ve also known of about 5 people who if you go by the symptoms most definitely had it around Christmas time, and another who had similar symptoms in October, and he ordered a test when they became available and yes it showed that antibodies where present. "

to arly anti body teatswere pretty useless and loads of false results especially mail order ones that weren't and still aren't approved so that unfortunately proves nothing

"There’ll be mini waves but it is true that the vast majority of people will only get minor symptoms not that different to a “normal” cold. So the question isn’t “will there be a second wave”, it is “what is the relevance of a second wave”. "

I'm glad you told me that because it's nice to know no more people will die

I don’t know why the government or anyone else bothers with experts and scientists - the people with the real facts, knowledge and expertise are all on here giving their up to the minute commentary on what will happen, won’t happen, didn’t happen, has happened. The Karens on Fab are just as ubiquitous as their Facebook counterparts.

What some random profile holder/armchair expert virus commentator thinks about a second wave on the infamous virus forum is about as relevant and reliable as your social media feed so if you are using this as the deciding factor as to whether or not you book a holiday...don’t.

"There won't be a second wave. "

No because the first wave isn't over an will not be as long as the fucking idiots keep getting together in bloody great groups and passing the fucking virus around.

Of course it is not going to go away, and if people think there is a miracle cure / vaccine imminent think again.

People have died, people are dying and more people will die.

I just hope all the idiots sharing this virus in pubs, clubs and shops dont loose close friends; but of course now you can go to their funeral in your masses and share the virus even more !

Ok let's all stay in and isolate till no one dies of anything, should only take a couple of years. But I'm sure they will keep my job open.

Some things to consider. For those who are "certain" that they had it 1, 2 or more years ago because they had some symptoms.

80 percent of positive tests are for people who are asymptomatic at the time of the test.

Of the tests that were done for people presenting in hospital and who were exhibiting symptoms and covid was suspected, less than 10% returned a positive covid test. So 90% who had 'symptoms" returned negative test results.

Sourced from that well known health site... BBC. Com

"I think the sooner we stop thinking in waves and just understand that its now in the population the better. With waves people look for opportunities of "normal" which will then trigger more infections. If we understand that its here and keep doing the right things infections will be minimised."

I agree ??

The first wave of the influenza virus in early 1918 killed approximately 900,000 people.

The second wave in late 1918 killed over 2.5 million

And during 1919 and 1920 a further 5-15 million are estimated to have died.

Not all from flu but with countries weakened by 4 years of war numbers have been hard to estimate accurately.

So yes it’s here! It’s not going away anytime soon!!

Just be sensible and wash sanitize and protect the people at risk.

Approved tests carried out properly will give a better indication but these only became available in May and samples taken by a phlebotomist and sent to a laboratory. Things are developing rapidly, for example, early tests for infection would give a positive result for any one of around 15 different viruses, today they are more specific.

Until scientists can prove that it existed in china before December 2019 then anyone claiming they had it at Christmas in the UK is most likely wrong.

And unless someone can prove why it took so long for people to start to die and then it suddenly became exponential then they probably didn't have it in January or possibly February either.

There was enough discussion that nobody could have missed it.

They’ve already proven it was in France in December 2019, so it’s likely it was here too.

Also it’s now widely accepted it was in China in November (at least), with many tests of old samples confirming that, including a British citizen who was in Wuhan and fell ill November 2019.

Wasn't it the guy from gang of four. Toured china til end of November came home and fell ill in December. They have detected RNA in french sewage water in december 2019 although there is quite a lot of doubt about that test. Just looking at the spike in deaths it seems likely it first hit the uk at the very earliest end of december.

China notified the WHO of a new Virus on December 31st 2019. China had spent much of November and October detaining Doctors or anyone who was trying to raise the alarm about the virus.

It's plausible that the virus was amongst the population of Wuhan as early as September. As the UK had its first confirmed case 3 months before the peak in April a similar pattern happened in China in January.

Factor in people walking through and connecting in Airports from China to the rest of the World and it's the ideal situation for a virus to spread.

The virus is thriving in currently hot and cold parts of the world. Texas where summer temperatures hit 30/40c has seen 10,000 new cases a day this week with southern warmer states also having massive outbreaks. While Brazil currently in Winter has 40,000 new cases a day this week.

Also it's not a flu or pneumonia, it gives the systems of the latter, however, Covid 19 is a blood virus that infects people through the respiratory systems. It's why in severe cases any number or organs have been attack by the virus.

Calculating what defines a wave most scientists even can't agree. The 1919 flu pandemic had 3 waves. The first didn't greatly affect the UK. The 2nd wave did and the so did the third wave.

The difference now is this is the first global pandemic in our very connected global world. Travelling in 1919 round the globe took weeks, now the longest of journeys by air take hours to 1 day.

So different waves hit different parts of the world at different times in quicker succession. The 3 waves took just over 1 year in 1919. In 2020 we've had 4 massive outbreaks on 4 continents within 6 months. Again the terminology on what counts as a wave is still highly debated.

"I heard yesterday from a health worker friend that there’s been a spike in COVID hospital admissions in the area over the last few days. "

Been looking at the official figures on hospitals for months and I haven't seen a spike in admissions in any region as of the latest figures yesterday. There's now just over 2,200 people in hospital in the UK being treated for the virus of which 177 are on ventilators. Those numbers are reducing by 50% every two weeks.

Fewer than 10 people are admitted to hospital in most regions each day.

There wasn't a vaccine for the 1919 pandemic and it didn't do endless waves. It did three waves in all. With effective control and effort it is possible to keep virus infections down.

Nothing lasts forever and the same applies to the virus. 1 year to 18 months is the average for a pandemic in recent times.

What part of the country is that? Bear in mind I follow this very closely. Leicestershire the only Part of the Uk put back on lockdown. They are 17.3% down on hospital admission than this time last year for the last 5 days.

So I must of missed the hospital spike that your friend works in

Agreed. Also worth noting had the full test results been available to local areas sooner, the Leicester outbreak could have been less severe and contained much sooner.

It will be interesting to see what happens in September when children are due to go back to school. Also, let's see what happens after 2-3 weeks of the pubs opening as there may be another spike. Personally I think a second wave is likely to be on the horizon and have started stocking up a bit in preparation.

Tbh, that was the original thinking behind my question... I just want to get organised and prepared incase we are locked down again.

Not bothered about a regional lockdown, just wondering if things get out of hand , will we be lockdown again.

Need to start prepping and filling my lock up

There has been about 20k additional deaths over the course of the spring over and above a normal bad flu year. 2000 and 2014 were bad years. This is a bit worse but not much. It could have become much worse but now that everyone has stopoed shaking hands and hugging etc it'll probably be minor stuff from now on.

I think it's been around for a lot longer than we know and we are already past the second wave. Without a cure its probably always going to be around like the flue.

"dont know about a second wave but watching the news this morning some pubs that opend at the weekend are know having to shut fown again as customers in some pubs have tested positive for covid.hopefully they havent infected anyone else.guess we will find out in a cpl of weeks if there are any more infections from these pubs customers

Which prevents a second wave

yea it does prevent a 2nd wave.not good news to those who may have been in those pubs though if they have picked it up

They all made a conscious choice to go to the pub. If they catch it then they have nobody to blame but themselves.

"

And what about all the other people they will infect? Do they only have themselves to blame?

People talking about the flu, can you imagine the amount of deaths if there wasn't a flu vaccine!! One has a vaccine and one doesn't so you can't put them in the same category.

There isnt going to be a second wave, there wasn't with VE day, there wasn't with the beaches and there wasn't with the protesting.

It seems like some people are wishing for a second wave sometimes.

I don't think people are wishing for it. Considering the last few months it's completely understandable why people are worried. No one can predict with absolute certainty if there will be a second wave, however, most pandemics do hit in waves.

It's a hope for the best but prepare for the worst situation.

"It will be interesting to see what happens in September when children are due to go back to school.

Need to start prepping and filling my lock up "

I think that's very sensible under the circumstances. If we look at what has happened in America, where there was a rush to open up the economy again, they're now regularly seeing 50000 new cases per day and are having to reintroduce lockdown measures. Whilst I don't think we'll see those levels of infection rates in the UK (nowhere near the population for starters) it's a strong possibility the infection rate will increase in the autumn. Fingers crossed for the best outcome, but no harm in making sure we've got the basics in the house.

Anyone who still thinks this is no worse than the flu, please consider, aside from the near 44000 people (recorded) who have lost their lives to this virus, there's also a growing number of people who have caught CV19 and are reporting having been left with long term symptoms from which they are struggling to recover from. Stay safe and well everyone x

"No, because there wasn't even a first wave.

The excess deaths occurred post lockdown, all deaths were recorded as C-19 deaths regardless, blankwt DNR notices and the withdrawal of treatment for those with serious illnesses make the C-19 death rate seem bad.

Second wave is all about thought control & conditioning. "

At last, someone with a critical thinking brain who realises what this really is.

"Or we could already have been in it. Has anyone looked at number of deaths from last 3 months of 2019 compared to previous years? "

Yes this is termed “ excess deaths “

During lockdown these were very high- they are now negative- ie fewer deaths than expected- this is because some of those who died in the past few weeks would have died soon anyway

I haven’t found figures for excess deaths broken down by age

This is a very new virus and we are learning all the time.

Swine flu was similar to other flu viruses so a vaccine was produced quickly which gives some protection to the most vulnerable. Flu circulates continually peaking in the winter when people congregate indoors even though we have vaccines

Even if we get a vaccine for Covid we would have to vaccinate nearly everyone to keep it out of circulation ( take recent outbreaks of measles and mumps as examples)

We don’t know how long people are immune after recovering from Covid so we will have to wait to see how long a vaccine is protective for.

HIV was a completely new virus and we still don’t have a vaccine - yes we have treatments but how long did that take?

The sad difference between Covid and HIV is that risk taking by a minority puts everyone at risk

Governments have to make policies based on a balance of risks on a population level- most people think the U.K. has made mistakes.

Yeah although presumably anyone 'brave' enough to go to the pub recently will have understood the risk and been OK with it? Which is why, despite the fact that I've been pining for any kind of social life these past months, I have swerved it thus far.

"People need to realise this is just the start

Please can you explain further...

This isn’t going to go away, we’re going to need a vaccine and to learn to live with it.

1919 was influenza - a different sort of virus. People got it then either died or didn’t. Either way they didn’t get it again- and flu hasn’t gone away it mutates and continues every winter.

Yeah this virus is different than the seasonal flu we catch annually. The rate of infection is much higher and study suggest that most don't become immune after catching it for longer than 2-3 months on average. Meaning that even people who have had coronavirus and were fine could catch it again in the winter.

Theyve never cured the common flu why would we be able to cure a stronger strain of it. The problem with the people looking for a so-called cure for any disease whether it be aids cancer flu whatever is there more money to be made treating things than curing them so expect a treatment that you need everyyear at least once big bucks for the pharmaceutical giants and back handers for the people in government

There's been no reports of anyone being infected twice. Also Coronaviruses are generally very stable viruses that are slow to mutate, so you'd expect immunity to last longer than 2-3 months, however with any new virus or condition, we won't know for sure for quite some time.

Covid 19 has mutated already with 2 different strains. The latest research shows it is becoming more contagious but not more fatal. This is similar to 1919 influenza pandemic. Think of it like this, if a virus becomes too fatal it will run out of hosts.

The NY Times podcast from July 6 is worth listening to.

A few folk on here seem to be confusing 'critical thinking' with 'not agreeing with my point of view'. Anyone who wants to go out and take risks, that's up to you, although by doing so you may be putting friends and family at risk. Those of us who are feeling very cautious and a bit nervous about what is happening and what is to come, please respect our point of view. Absolutely nobody, cautious or not, wants to be in this situation, I'm pretty sure of that.

Really interesting to hear how you come to work that out “Definitely“

I’ve heard this “Definitely“ before

8 weeks ago when everyone went to the beach

5 weeks ago when the protesters were on the streets

3 weeks ago when the beaches were rammed full

1 week ago when the pubs.

Few other issues I have with your “definitely“

Deaths going down

Infections going down

ICU and hospital admission going right down

5 year average going down

Real experts on the front line all saying the virus is getting weaker.

The country’s that are still getting a lot of infections seeing hospital admission dropping in big numbers.

Also keep hearing people going on about wait 2 weeks for the infection rate to go up after the pubs open. Err that’s not being seen in other EU country’s ( but no doubt the uk is different) yeah I’ve heard that as well 8 weeks ago.....

I hope you are right and infections keep going down and reopening pubs etc does cause a new spike. The government may start to see an effect after 2 weeks but is more likely to be 4 to 8 weeks when the infection spike will hit. Death rate spike would be 6 to 10 weeks.

"The odd thing about all this is that since Covid19, we haven't heard of anybody that has had influenza, man flu, or even a cold!"

In that case why have we not been advised previously to wera masks during cold and flu outbreaks to protect ourselves, the elderly and infirm, soounds selfish to me if that is the case.

Nobody seems to have died from anything else but covid-19 this year

Jack Charlton didn't die of covid. RIP wor Jack "

My dad used to drink with all 3 of the Charlton brothers. Jack used to visit his and my hometown quite regularly. Going to start a donation page on Facebook to raise money to have a memorial in Ashington in his honour.

I'm sick of hearing about a second wave, it's like some people don't want it to be over.

Well.. I suppose when you are getting paid for doing nothing, who would.

"Apologies if this subject has been done to death, but I couldn't find it with a quick forum search.....

I'm not longer following the virus online, but am interested in what people believe about a second wave of infection.

Do you think there will be one?

When do you think it will be?

Also, how long do you think the people in the know will have the information before they let us know?"

Couldn't have said it better.

Apparently even if there is a second wave we won't be locked down because of the damage to the economy. So nobody is going to be paid for doing nothing.

Apparently okay.

Has any other countries locked down because of a second wave yet?

I don't think so, yet all we are hearing here is that a second wave is coming.
