I dont think they should because I think that it is way to early for them to be opening as there really shouldnt be any gatherings going on as the consequences could be a 2nd wave comming quicker than previously thought.

It really is a tricky one, shag. Businesses need to start up again, that includes hospitality. Whether it's financially viable for them, they won't know until they see what their footfall is. We won't know the impact on infection rate for a while.

On the one hand businesses do need to get moving again and cant stay closed forever but at the same time, while we still have restrictions for the home it does seem kind of backwards but then that is what they have done the whole time during this.

Time will tell if it was a good idea, reports all this week that the virus is spreading again but yet still allowed to reopen.

Its all a mess really.

They have to open sometime, we need to start seeing people again, the economy needs us to start spending again

That said I’m in no rush to get back to a pub or restaurant while restrictions are in place, it’s seems crazy to me that 100+ people most from different households can go inside pubs today but I can’t have a dozen friends from 3/4 different households in my back garden

Economy cannot be brought to a standstill indefinitely, but people have to take ownership and behave responsibly!

Our 'entitlement' enriched society has always loved blaming everyone else, especially the 'institution' for everything! No one is forcing anyone to go to a pub. Those who will behave recklessly will do so whether pubs are open or not.

Most pubs will be closed again by the end of the month, booking tables and no socialising that's not how pubs work. But the people who make the rules don't use pubs so have no idea, watch pubs close and millions more on the dole. End lockdown or 10s of thousands are going to die, and the virus won't get a look in.

I don’t mean to sound disrespectful at all, but a lot of pubs and bars have worked on a booking basis for a while now (bars especially). and if you look at Wetherspoons, they’ve had ordering via app for years and it’s immensely popular.

Pubs have changed and I’m sure they’ll be fine. The process around booking and ordering Via apps has become so streamlined that it doesn’t really have any negative impact

I bet a lot of pub workers are happy to go back to work. People can make their own assessment as to what risk they want to take.

I agree! Fact is most will get covid. Iv had it, my mum who is in the serious risk group also had it same time. People seem to think they brought in lockdown to stop covid. They didnt, just to slow it so people will still get it. If your worried then stay in simple. "

The elephant in the room is that covid isn't killing anymore, death rates are down, hospital admissions are down, ICUs are down, even in Leicester. The lockdown was for the reasons above, not to stop everyone for ever catching covid, it's actually mutating and weakening.time to get back to normal, proper normal, you are always going to get the likes of Jones and Jarvis on their hot media salaries fearmongering for as long as possible,who from yesterday seems they where both wrong on hydroxychloroquine, just to look clever on TV.

It's not a case of a blanket "if they should or should not re-open" stance imo. It's a case of individual common sense. There's a big difference between re-opening a pub in London city center and re-opening a pub that's out in the sticks somewhere.

We all live somewhere different with different population densities and different risk factors.

If we travel 4 miles in one direction, we end up in a built up town center where the pubs where usually full of people. If we travel 4 miles in the other direction, we are out in the country side and we've never seen more than 10 people in that pub at any one time.

Point is, we wont be considering going anywhere near a town center for drinks for some time. Popping out into the countryside and seeing if the pub is empty on the other hand...we might (but probably wont) do.

I won't be going to a pub for a while yet want to see what happens. Eventually a lot of us are going to get it the longer we can post pone the inevitable the more chance of better treatments being found all be it a slim chance the main priority with lockdown was to give the NHS the best chance of coping, none of us want to see people dead in the streets cos they can't get into hospital. Lots more could be done to stop the rapid spread ie wearing face masks in public , anyone preparing food for public consumption should be legally bound to wear them, I noticed in KFC that the food is racked up only inches from the faces of people serving it up and they were taking no precautions at all probably the same in all fast food places it seems totally irresponsible to me I won't be giving them any business.

We’ve been out for lunch in a pub/restaurant local to us. It was perfectly fine only a handful of people in there, everyone was distanced. We ate, had a pint and left. What’s all the negativity about ? We visited a supermarket after and tbh was in much closer proximity to many more people than our trip to the pub.

Personally, I think it's a bit too soon. Especially considering the recent spike in infections in some parts of the country.

But I also understand that businesses can't close indefinitely and people want a bit of normality back.

I won't be going to pubs or restaurants for at least a couple more months. My plan is to stay indoors and watch what happens. Maybe it will all be fine... I hope so.

Greater Tokyo has a population of 37 million so density is not the answer.

I think pubs and restaurants should have opened on a weeknight but I think it's right that they are able to reopen, otherwise too many will go under. I just find it odd that pubs are able to open but gyms can't yet.

I would have preferred a beer garden only period, to have given the business income and trial things. It would have excluded pubs without gardens but could have prevented calamity.

People in Japan, South Korea etc are compliant with their authorities and guidelines given; and that helps in keeping infection rates and death down.

The pubs had a choice to open or not today

They could have started Monday or any day after today they could even have gone back to the old licensing hours if they chose to but many have opted to open today it was there choice not the governments as they just said they could open from today remember

The bars and restaurants have been open for weeks in France and no sign of problems. This is getting to be like crying wolf, every time something is relax everyone says we'll get a spike and guess what, we don't.

I get the impression you’re really wishing for another wave? It’s all you talk about.

The photos in the news are misleading, which is totally the intention of those publishers.

I went out last night - everywhere was quiet. There was one place with huge Socially distanced queues - out of hundreds bars. Everywhere else was calm, quiet and chilled.

But of course they won’t show that stuff because they want to cause hysteria.

Japan has only tested 300,000 people to date, so it’s hard to trust their figures fully.

But yeah compliance is a big part of it, and also there’s mounting evidence that Japanese people have a better immune response to the virus, which may either be genetic or caused by previous exposure to a similar virus

Locking the idiots away keeps the keyworkers safe.

The police, ambulance service, hospitals shouldn't have to deal with pissed up idiots. It puts them at risk of catching the virus.

The pissed up people causing trouble or so d*unk they can't walk, should just be thrown in big holding cells for 14 days. They can then infect each other and keep everyone else safe.
