Imperial College London Research 'Covid Tests'

I received an invitation to take two Covid tests (through the post) to compare the current 'nose and throat' with a 'saliva' test to see which has better results.

Did the online bit and now wait for the tests to arrive in one week. Delivered by a Royal Mail and collected by a courier.

I will get the results of the 'nose and throat' but not the 'saliva' as it's research to test clinical effectiveness of that particular test (the letter notes).

It won't say if I have had it - only if I have it now. If I have it now, they will inform Test and Trace for further action.

The selection of subjects is random but ranged through ages. (FAQ pages) They will not test for DNA.

They will be targeting certain areas and age groups.

Seems like a bit of a last ditch attempt at test and trace.

Anyway if your happy to do it then go for it.

I'm okay with it - My friend said her Doctor said if they can make the saliva test work it can be done so much quicker than the invasive stick in the nose and throat

I'm happy to do it - actually I think we have already had it just after Xmas - so would have like to do the antigen one.

I thought i had it not long after xmas too, all the symptoms but i have now had the antibody test and have no antibodies so it seems it wasn't covid 19 going around at that time.I was convinced it was until i was tested the other day.

Throat and nose swab to indicate if you currently have it, antibody blood test to see if you have developed antibodies to the virus after having been exposed to it.

Influenza A and RSV were rampant in the UK in December - it may have been one of those

And the antigen/swab/saliva test is have I got it now/had it in the last few days/probably week at most

The blood/antibody test is have I had it more than 28 days ago

I was one of the few that was absolutely fine all winter!

Then got covid in April! I’ve had the blood test and got antibodies and have been invited to donate plasma so it’s worth having these things if it helps others and helps planning for the future etc

The power of suggestion... If we've all been locked down for 3 months for fear of catching this thing.... With a non stop diet of fear in the media... There's a good chance we will talk ourselves into having some of the symptoms when we feel under the weather.

306k cases out of over 5 million tests... And they only for those who feel they are exhibiting symptoms and merit testing.

It's great that we now are refining our abilities to test more comprehensively, as well as possibly quicker and with highly reliable results. Possibly saving money is a bonus, though it will probably be for the private companies that are now making £millions out of services formerly run by employees in the NHS. Just the app development cost us millions and it failed

I'm assuming that the original Chinese alerts from the poor Dr who finally got informed and died, was a delayed culmination of ongoing infection that had existed for a longer period than we'd been thinking. If it perhaps hadn't been far his alerts and promotion of it, maybe it could have been overlooked for much longer. Small symptoms differencea from other conditions scattered thinly could be very easily confused and missed. If it hsd been around for longer, it would have needed carriers to bring a to here or other countries, if it started there.

They'd tracked many of the earlier points of first infection points in the chains of infection here, many coming from Italy, France and Spain. The almost ridiculous immigration 14 days quarantine brought in in June should have had a similar move in March, if it was going to be much value.

The only known 2019 infection was 1 at the very end of December 2019, in France. I'm assuming that if if other countries from China had had infections being passed around last year, more evidence would have come to light, more than 6 months later.

There is no conclusive proof that we develop anti bodies that survive for a long period of time for covid-19, studies are still ongoing with nhs personnel

I thought I'd had it in January, been to be a ginnea pig to test the tests. Got my results...I've not had it and haven't got it. Was a bit disappointed as I was sure I had it as I suffered a very weird flu type illness back in January.

Many people have flu like illnesses every year - you can see the graph for their incidence on the net - usually a big spike in the UK in January and August in Australia - although this year they and us were a month earlier than normal

So it’s really common to have these sort of things and they happened even before covid

This is true but only a small percentage develop antibodies by the looks. Not even all those testing negative are actually negative . So who will ever really know. Pretty sureI had it in december. I've never felt so poorly and when my mum came down with what the drs think was covid I didn't catch it and I was around her for ages , and my little boy because she coulsnt even dress herself or stay awake to eat anything .

The large majority of people who test positive for covid develop antibodies - even those who have mild illness and don’t get admitted - there’s been studies into this including in french healthcare workers who had mild covid

So the antibody test negative is almost certainly a negative for having had it

A swab negative can be just a timing thing I’d done too late or a technique thing if not done properly (I can vouch if done properly they’re not nice!)

The issue away from the NHS antibody tests and possibly all of them, is that tests too early don't show them. The commercial providers have been very selective in the research results that they select to claim almost 100% success. Radio 4 'More Or Less' show included this amongst its coverage of covid-19 statistics being used atm.

The bigger issue for me is what effect multiple infections could have upon people, should immunity contemplate. not be full, nor particularly long-term. Successive organ damage, including to the brain, is not a good thing to contemplate

So now I know 11 people that have received and invitation to take part in the test.

The fact that I personally know of 11 speaks of just how big the Research Programme is.

There is a fair chance that you will receive one in the post quite soon.
