Leicester has seen a spike

It was mentioned on the daily briefing earlier in the week that Leicester has seen a spike in positive cases. If (and that's a big if) the government introduce local lockdowns in specific areas do you think people would adhere to it or will people ignore the advice? It seems that here in Leicester people have gotten fed up of the lockdown and interpreted the easing of the lockdown as everything is back to normal.

Lockdown doesn't work unless its underpinned with large fines and a strong moral example from above.

A continuation of £30 fines and people at the top flaunting the rules they expect the rest of us to follow isn't the answer.

It will come down to how they enforce it. If they do it properly and close all the local stores and parks etc down and fine people breaking the lockdown then yes it may just work but if they just go into it hoping people will voluntarily lock down then you havent got a chance. The amount of the general public that we have had to deal with during the main lockdown who acted like spoilt children throwing their toys out of the pram because mummy said no was actually ridiculous.

I completely agree with you. If they have local lockdowns it would only work if the non essential shops were to close along with other businesses.

Central

People are fairly mobile in their general lives now, not always living within a couple of miles from where much of their lives happen. During the initial lockdown people only had cause to be home or to shop weekly for essentials. People are now back at work etc. (outside of key workers).

It will be much harder to engage a fuller lockdown in a restricted area. People would go and stay in an unrestricted place now, if there was heavy policing. Tracing, testing and isolation of contacts if the infected is the intelligent response to local outbreaks.

A box at end of your bed

I went to a local supermarket on Sunday and as far as I could tell, lockdown is well and truly over along with social distancing. The shop was heaving stood at bottom of isle I could not see top for the amount of people on it I have not seen it like that since March.

I think there's a lot that don't care or maybe just don't think

about it they just want to get back to a normal life again.

I work in the Leicestershire area. And frankly I've noticed the families of the people I care for are the ones not observing lock down.

Cleaners still coming in. Elderly not staying home. Family is visiting.

So there's me, working, in all this warm weather, in full ppe to protect my clients, but their own family put them at risk.

And who do you think will be to blame when their 93 year old frail parent dies from covid? It won't be the family. It'll be the carers. Cos all we hear is clients and family telling us they worry we will bring it in

Easier for you to just make believe nothing's actually a risk and no-one is really dying anyway like yourself. Eh?

For someone who's complaining about virtue signaling, you sure do spend the majority of your day virtue signalling to people.

Absolutely.i very much agree with you.

People are relaxing far too soon, the virus is still with us, just as active if allowed, therefore it is commonsense to isolate until able to monitor spikes, and provide cure...… never mind commerce, or certainly protests such as blm should cease, we all have a duty of care to each other ALM

It's when people say or do things in public (especially social media) for social approval, rather than any real principles.

I am confused at the outrage at this comment.

I think it means all of us who have done our bit over the last three months because we wanted to keep ourselves and others safe have now watched many other people breaking those rules.

We are still being told you can't see your family etc while others are breaking those rules then I am not surprised that people well bugger that, other people are not doing their bit, why should I type of thing.

And just to clarify. I did do my bit for a long time. I've also been wearing a mask in public for the whole lockdown and still will to continue to. But if the police are going to stand and watch a 15,000+ protest or a 6,000+ illegal rave then no I am not going to feel guilty about having a friend over for a cup of tea.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I like this one because it is spot on. MY ENTITLED OPINION.

All the younger kids protesting about every and anything just to go against the run of things, who think that they are bullet proof to this virus.

Bring on a vaccine so we can all go out to play again, as nothing Doing here until then, as we respect the safety of others, be it family or strangers. xxx

I think a lot of people will be thinking the same thing. I know I thought it after a couple of things, the first one the whole Cummings thing as that was a smack in the face to all of us who had stuck to it and now the protests / raves and people not sticking to 2 metres in shops

At least we know whether our families have stuck to it or not.

Well my take on it is this.. just because the covidiots protesting are risking theirs, their families and loved ones lives does not mean I will copy them. It's not a race to the bottom surely... But I imagine if it backfires and there is is a spike amongst the protestors then at least they can blame the government or racism.. not a jot of blame can be heaped upon them..

None of us is able to until levels of infection are far lower than current levels. There are still 1000 new reported infections in the UK every day.

My partner and my mum's partner are too vulnerable to risk it. They *will* die if the get COVID-19 due to lung conditions and immunodeficiency. Its not a case of a calculated risk.

People, stop being selfish and think of this as a collective act.

It's a term coopted by a lot of people, but is has essentially come to mean a person that tries to project their moral judgement onto others via some passive aggressive means, usually implying that they have some kind of superior moral stance by virtue of the fact they're pointing out nothing of any factual basisbut really just moralising.

And yes the very accusation of virtue signalling is itself virtue signalling. Which is why it's not a good idea to get into a habit of using the term too often.

Where is the next 'spike' going to be Liverpool ? Bournemouth ? or one of the cities where the people have been demonstrating in an 'unsafe manner'.

Sir Peter Soulsby, Mayor of Leicester, is questioning how a lockdown extension is going to help as the existing lockdown has obviously failed to work.

This from a man who was 'spoken to' by Leicestershire Police for visiting his girlfriend during the peak of lockdown on several occasions.

Leadership by example it seems...
