I looked in to this slightly .from what I could gather ..... if you’d already purchased travel insurance then medical implications caused by coronavirus would be covered (with certain insurance companies) however I couldn’t find anything regarding purchasing at a future date

Our problem is we have a yearly policy but 2 holidays cancelled and rebooked so classed as new bookings this may well kill the travel industry off unless it’s sorted

Cheshire, Windermere ,Cumbria

Can’t see any providers giving cover on new policy’s but believe any that we’re in place before the lockdown should cover already booked trips but even then they will push you down the sort it with your airline route.

Do you mean if you catch covid and are ill on holiday? Or if holidays get cancelled due to countries locking down?

Martin Lewis usually has good advice on his Money Saving Expert site.

We were meant to have been in Spain the beginning of this month and we booked it just at the end of February.

When we took out insurance we were offered covid 19 cover then so guessing yes.

Depends on the provider, our annual cover will cover the virus and this cover will be maintained for existing bookings if the policy is extended due to expiring before the trip. New bookings will not be covered however.

Worth checking with your broker or provider.

Not here

Have a look at Avanti Travel Insurance. I received an email a couple of days ago which included the following paragraph.

Be covered for COVID-19 when abroad

We can cover you for medical expenses and repatriation if you become unwell as a result of COVID-19 whilst travelling abroad. Like other insurers, we can’t cover claims related to coronavirus before you travel or if you are positively diagnosed before you leave home. However, we think this will come as a relief for anyone who still hopes to travel outside the UK when restrictions are lifted.^

Central

The insurers generally dropped cover in about March for new policies. Cover purchased earlier may still have it, such as with an annual policy. It all depends on the terms and conditions of the contract.

Important also is what official advice the government is giving. If we travel in contravention of government advice, even with cover, then our insurance may be void.

I would think about potentially having to pay for my own health care and repatriation if needed and seriously ill.

I'm guessing that specialist cover may be available from somewhere but is now likely to be incredibly expensive. Not the best news

Reading

Although only one case, when the medical bill for a recent patient in Seattle came to over $11M, it's not surprising insurance companies are being a little cagey.

None are covering covid unfortunately if you purchased after the who declared it a pandemic in March. If you took out insurance before then the majority of insurance covers you unless it stipulates otherwise. Im not sure where you stand if you took out a policy before pandemic announcement and then changed holiday dates im not sure if they will issue you with a new policy and not cover you.

Its best to write (any) questions regarding your level of cover directly to the underwriting firm.

Bybass the broker if you have one...

Confirm in your email that their answer forms the basis of your indemnity.

If the insurance claim department tries to shaft on a claim after the fact just show the email from their own underwriting department confirming your level of cover.

Most insurance firms have really poor communication between their underwriters and claims departments. It and us and them mentality.

The underwriters are the horse and claims the cart.

If you have annual insurance any holidays booked after 24th March will not be covered as government advice is not to travel and covid19 will not be covered even after this pandemic. Insurance companies have also stopped selling new travel insurance.

Us too.

It was ridiculous last time.

£159 for 2 of us with basic cover for 10 day holiday in Spain

And that was before covid!

You won't get covid-19 insurance cover now, the company will definitely have to pay out. That is not good business for them, unless they make you pay through the nose.
