Think they were allowed to travel to Wellington on compassionate grounds but they are no longer allowing that now.

I must admit when I heard the headline I thought, great another black mark against the UK! But when you read about it they didn't test them after they had self-isolated for some strange reason and they had stopped off on the way so may not have brought it from here...

Yes a parent was dying, they are allowing it after a covid-19 test first

You saw the headlines and didn't read the story. They were given compassionate grounds to visit as a relative was dying and that person unfortunately died as they were on the way there. The two of them isolated with a relative and that relative is now isolating too. This minor spike should be contained.

I'm not entirely sure you're being fair. They flew to be with a dying relative, which was permitted, and NZ government officials say both women complied with everything that was asked of them and did nothing wrong. They were released after 6 days quarantine without being tested, despite the fact that those being held in quarantine were supposed to be tested on the 3rd and 12th day

My concern here and I might be wrong is that they traveled separately, not sure if that means the flight. Either way it suggests that there is either much more asymptomatic desease in the UK or flying is out of the question at the moment.

Which does ask questions in itself, if they caught it on the flight how many others did and if they had it before flying how many might now have it

I'm sure if you read beyond the headlines all your questions will be answered. If you still think they're selfish that's fine, I doubt anything anyone says here will convince you otherwise.

"A lot of very nasty people on here having read a lot of the above"

There's actually only one person being uneccesarily harsh.

I think the fault lies with the authorities as they were released from quarantine early due to the imminent death of their parent. I would hope due to the fact that they knew they hadn't completed their quarantine period that they avoided contact with other people on their travels, especially as one of them didn't feel well apparently, but it's a very long way from Aulkland to Wellington, 650kms I think, and involves a ferry journey too and you aren't usually allowed to stay in your vehicle on a ferry. Anyway it's blown it for anyone else who needs a compassionate exemption. I see Australia has extended their border closure now, I wonder if this incident in NZ had any bearing on that decision.

Some love a headline ...they read no further and dramatise what is in effect a very sad outcome.

Countries are still reviewing immigration rules and it's tougher for UK citizens to enter many of them, compared to neighbouring places. The NZ matter is a tragedy for all concerned and I hope doesn't result in major issues for them.

I think that we may face hard restrictions for some time but mainly due to our infection levels, not the NZ issue.

Would we have discovered a effective treatment if we had all followed the NZ path. It's all what ifs, whys and wherefores. New Zealand got lucky and dodged a Bullet for now. They will now have to isolate themselves from the rest of the world even more now and hope for a cure or vaccine. Talk about walking on egg shells.

What makes them so special to get compassionate leave. What about the rest of the world who've had loved ones die and couldn't go to be by there bedside or to their funeral. Like the woman here in Ireland who watched her mothers funeral on youtube or the mother who watched her down syndrome son on WhatsApp from a nurses phone as he died alone and scared and could understand why his devoted mother couldn't be with him.

They weren't special it was the NZ rules at the time and they followed them completely, those rules are now temporarily suspended until they ensure that testing happens before allowing it

I don’t get this.

You’re telling me that a parent would watch on a mobile phone their child die scared and alone, wanting their mummy or daddy?

I’m a parent.

No fucking way would I allow this to happen and I doubt very much that the vast majority of parents would either.

Not buying it sorry.

you can not buy it all you like but it factually happened

i know people personally who were not allowed to attend the funeral of grandparents because of lockdown restrictions

the OP was right, these people were selfish in that they have spread the disease to a country that had eradicated it, for something that many other people have not even been allowed to do in their own country ... they knew they had travelled through multiple airports, they knew they hadn’t completed quarantine, they knew they hadn't been tested ... shouldn’t really matter if they were allowed out, any sense of moral obligation would have told them it wasn’t right to do so

Anybody would think they have committed a Heinous crime. It beggars believe how hostile some people on here have become to simple acts of compassion. I just hope there are plenty of pedestals for all you puritanicals on here that never make mistakes. However if you put yourself on a pedestal there is always someone wanting to knock you off it when you do something wrong.

Unfortunately the OP is a prime example of another pandemic sweeping the world. Reads a sensationalised headline and makes up their mind on it, without reading the article or indeed researching it further. Two questions

"I have been talking to an old friend who lives in New Zealand and the truth is Yes it haa been traced back to 2 UK passport holders who left the UK in October last year on a years round the world trip. They arrived from another country which has not been disclosed. But it was a direct flight from that country.

Ah so JUST WHERE HAD THESE 2 PEOPLE COME FROM !

They flew from uk thro middle

East to brisbane then Auckland

3 flights 3 airports then travelled the length of the north island by car and met people on the way

Another question, why the fuck doesn't my phone correct obvious typos *political* but "corrects" others that it has no need to?
