We are no different to other countries. American states all do their own things. German states as well and French regions came out of lockdown at different rates. Scotland was two weeks behind so why would they come out of lockdown at the same time as England?

So if they want to go it alone maybe they should and see how long they last as a country on there own

It’s been looked into by the welsh and the scotch and is not viable

Maybe you should run the country as you seem to know way more than everyone else

2 weeks behind what? we went into lockdown at the same time , the split of strategy came after

also america run a proper federal government system ... we don’t

Germany they may be taking a regional approach but its because some areas have a higher risk not because they have a different leader making the decisions

Aye this.

When you mean England is it or London? This isn’t having a go; the mayors of Manchester and Liverpool were arguing that they should be allowed to open schools in their own time. The R rate is completely different from the SW of England than the SW of Scotland. Don’t worry; it’s not a ploy to upset Boris, we just have different rates of infection and the devolved governments are doing what they can to keep people alive.

And has been quoted in another post, Scotland and Wales have their own devolved health strategy. When Boris announced his strategy on 9th May Scotland still had an R value greater than 1. Should they not take a different approach like the German federal states have done?

It's been disunited for years - and not just politically and nationally.

The fact that a virus that affects us all, irrespective of any of that, hasn't made us more united in the face of a common threat, speaks volumes.

Certainly, it shows up all the harking back to WW II talk for the bollocks it is.

As its a devolved matter its not that surprising. Could be an advantage to as each country can do what's right for it at the time rather than a 1 fits all approach

COVID 19 is the worst disease process I’ve ever worked with in my 8 years as an ICU nurse.

When they say “recovered” they don’t tell you that that means you may need a lung transplant. Or that you may come back after d/c with a massive heart attack or stroke bc COVID makes

I don't think Boris has actually tried to work together. He's tried to do it his way for the whole of the UK but, thankfully, the devolved governments haven't been prepared to just go along with it when they disagree with his decisions.

I am certainly not Nicola Sturgeon's biggest fan but, in my opinion, she has been far more clear and concise in her decisions & conveying them to the public. She has not rushed things, openly admitting she would far rather exercise caution than risk this virus getting out of control again.

As for the whole Dominic Cummings fiasco, that has truly shown just how inept Boris is as a leader.

Several posts on this thread sound quite bitter about the devolved governments making their own decisions, like they are naughty rebellious children. Perhaps, instead of pointing the finger at them for going it alone, people ought to consider why they are.

i would agree with NS being much clearer in the way she conveys messages and she comes across as more willing to be candid in saying in interviews I am not the expert and I don't know that answer off the top of my head but will find out ... that approach gets much more respect from me than people on the UK daily briefing who will waffle an answer around the question rather than just put their hands up and admit its been a developing situation and we dont have all the answers on day 1

she handled FM questions about her lockdown easing plan like a pro aswel!

in terms of what we have actually done though... i dint see that we are much different to englands rules just a week behind so i don't think we can take huge amounts of credit for a different strategy... just much clearer confident communication to go with it

Worst, second worst or third worst is not really important. Our stats are shocking. And as we are on an island, it was much easier to contain the disease than on the continent.

We also had two or three weeks more to make the right decisions.

Checks at airports and Saint Pancras as well as ports and that was the end of it. No instead, blondie the rock star carried on shaking hands and let the Cheltenham festival take place and locked down much later than needed.

To be fair he started well and that's where it sort of ended. As for bashing the other countries in the Union for having their own strategies (whilst still conferring with each other) fair play to them devolved govts have that entitlement. At least they stood their ground instead of waffling and blustering through each news conference like Boris has done a lot of lately

Boris and his cabinet chums refuse to speak to the devolved governments. The First Minister in Wales has expressed frustration because he believes there should be a UK wide plan. Meanwhile R in Wales is 0.7 and falling but just below 1 in England. Also deaths per head of population in Wales is half of that in England.

For a unified approach you need all to agree.

Devolved governments wont do this as they are trying to show they are in charge not Westminster.

In my opinion it's time for Westminster to say "follow our guidelines, or we stop providing money for the furlough of the jobs that England has allowed to go back but you havent" they cant have it all ways.

Westminster is the problem. The last 4 nations plus London mayor discussion was the 20th May. Westminster refuses to talk. The First Minister in Wales has expressed concerns over this approach as he believes a UK plan is necessary. Grave concerns that Westminster implements changes without planning and causes chaos.
