I think contactless payments in shops or supermarkets are currently preferred but I dont think it's a legal requirement

Yep, there is no requirement for contactless. Most places round me are still happy to do cash, only found 2 shops that insisted on card only and even that didn't need to be contactless.

Banking group say up to 20% of people in the uk do not have access to cards, so can't ban cash they must have rights.

Cash is legal tender & not everyone has a card. And not all shops have a card machine.

Electronic is subject to failure, so any shop would be stupid to not be able to take cash. My local Tesco was cash only for a few hours recently due to card transaction access failure
