Until it's settled worldwide or you are prepared to cut yourself off from the rest of the world, there's no real 'elimination of this virus'. It's always going to be a case of isolating anyone that's ill and trying to keep it from spreading rapidly.

Can Britain cut itself off from the whole world? No.

No amount of money can change that.

nearly eradicated it yes.whats going to happen wen they open to the rest of the world again dobt forget tourism is big part of there income.only takes one person with it to slip through.if that happens would it spread quicker seems as they have barley been touched by it.genuine question by the way nit trying to be a doom merchant

Yes it could be done and it would have been a reasonable goal early on. I don't think the government is interested, as they now want to open the economy. I'd willingly sacrifice liberty and take an economic hit still, to get to it or very close to it. Complete focus on where it is, who has it, isolation and treatment, including those who may have been infected by them. Somewhat of a fantasy now I think, sadly

The UK is Europe’s travel hub to the world. I don’t think we’ll ever be free of it in the way New Zealand.

But I do think with some planning and competency we could manage infections. Sadly they’re in short supply

Yes they can survive on there own,one death and New Zealand closed its borders and they are still closed.We are not self sufficient.

The British ae also non law obiding ,law and order is weak, very weak.The greedy and the selfish demanding holidays going on protest make it very hard for us to get rid of the virus.

Borders should have been closed from day one and stay closed for a while yet.

Eliminating a virus takes far more than social distancing. We've only eradicated one virus before and that's smallpox (we got close with polio). And what Oz and NZ are talking about is no new cases which is different from eliminating.

It shows sparsely populated countries, and those with experience of SARS & MERS, have generally done better.

New Zealand have done it with measures that aren't going to be sustainable in the long term (cutting itself off from every other country). Australia are getting close but necessary imports have already threatened new outbreaks (I think it was in Fremantle).

The UK should have done a lot more a lot sooner to contain it. But for elimination, if we want to live in an interconnected world, an effective vaccine will be needed with likely near universal uptake. As others have said, the only disease we've managed to eradicate so far is smallpox.

I just wanted to say I never meant literal elimination. I just mean win theory we could live freely after a severe 4 to 6 week lockdown and closed borders.

Then you could have your life back for a bit of time till you get a vaccine or treatment which many are optimistic could be available in April 2021. Think of Christmas.

No country has elleminated the virus but some have surpressed it to a low level. We have to accept that until a vaccine is readily available throughout the world we will have to live with restrictions on our lives. This virus hasn't gone away and won't for the foreseeable future.

We still have cases which are mostly from people still entering Australia... which seem to be controlled and isolated successfully in hotel quarantine for two weeks upon arrival - there is minimal community transmission at the moment - I think the key was the lockdown timing.

Wishing you all the best in the UK. It seems NZ have done a wonderful job but I’m sure as we progress they too will also have outbreaks to manage. X
