"The strings attached to government to bail out TFL was the reason for charges being reinstated and increased (30% increase from June) - madness when at the same time you are advising people to drive." I think this proves that the congestion charge is no longer about reducing traffic but about revenue raising. Same for the silly ULEZ too.

ULEZ is about forcing people to drive less polluting vehicles. But even this is another tax albeit targeting older vehicles. But ultimately if you wanted to do something about traffic you would ban all vehicles apart from the essential. Personally I was surprised that the C charge was not put up to £20. But traffic at the moment in the city is at an all time low for me.Journeys that used to take an hour or more are taking minutes and there is on street parking to be had on most streets now.So you could argue that its doing its job.

"Want to reduce the transfer rate? Encorage people who can, drive into work, leaving more space on the puplic transport for those eho carnt. Drop the congestion charges and the carparking fees. This will also help the small shop owners in the town centers. Simple really.....hang on goverment might lose money.. so never gunna happen.. Just remember this when it comes to voting next time 'money over lives'" Congestion charges in London are set by the mayor, not the government.

" The problem with ULEZ is that it hits the lower paid worst. They are the ones who can't afford to buy a newer vehicle (2015 onwards for diesels and 2007 for petrol generally) and are the ones who feel the financial squeeze most. Especially if they need their motor for work purposes (tradesmen and couriers for example, often self employed). And this brought in by a Labour mayor
