Should England of locked down for longer?

Here in Wales we are still locked down and I think it's the same in Scotland.

Makes me think with such a big population in England it seems crazy that they have relaxed things earlier.

No one was ever actually locked down. And it's a delicate balancing act. I personally wanted a similar reaction as Sweden. Ironically I've been out less since we could go out a bit more than before.

Went for more very long walks/bike rides in country parks on the first lockdown than I do generally at any other time.

Everyone stay inside and destroy their immune system then go out when the economy is zero no pubs open shops boarded up. Coronovirus is still around like the common cold which is the same family of viruses btw. What is better living life now or dieing indoors bored senseless.

England drives a large part of the economy, so that might contribute to the reason why this is so.

Although saying that, Paris seems to have more restrictions in place compared to some other parts of the country.

Not surprising, as I guess you may have enjoyed it more this time compared to when you did it before with larger crowds around.

interesting that you bring up staying in and the immune system. Was having the same chat with a doctor friend of mine. She was saying she worries that its going to have a negative impact on peoples immune systems because we arent being exposed to anything.

My home schooled daughter was a good example of that. She has been home schooled for 2 years or more now ... and basically has barely been ill. She still mixes with others but not like she would if she were at school. She went to a school/ college programme for a week just before lockdown and she got a tummy bug.. followed by a cold. doctor said it was because she had been more isolated for thr past 2 years and hadnt been exposed to things

Would you like to explain how we go about destroying our immune system by staying inside? Or rather "home", which can include gardens.

See message above, if you are not exposed to germs viruses etc in small harmless doses which are around all the time you are less likely to cope with flu or covid.

Coronavirus family is only one type that make up the common cold. It was suggested on the Horizon programme that in years to come this too could become like that as it's believed that one of the CVs may have caused a pandemic in the late 1800s (1890 I think).

However, we have to react to what CV19 is doing now, not what it might be like in years to come.

Rubbish. What you become exposed to helps you fight re-exposure to THOSE pathogens. It doesn't help you fight different viruses. It simply means the adaptive part of the immune system is not getting the opportunity to adapt.

and that is bad for us. Apparently... I am not a viral specialist but it was what was told to me by a doctor.

It was also similar to the argument coming from when parents were cleaning everything with antibacterial wipes etc for kids... worrying about them picking up germs... and there was a lot of research that suggested that too clean and not exposed could lean to immune system issues

There is a great deal about immunology that is not yet known or needs expounding.

Long before I got into health care (and uni), I was advised my daughter's immune system would improve. I now understand how. But CV19 is new to all of us. We already know some sufferers have produced antibodies and some haven't. The way immune system works suggests those who haven't got antibodies should still have produced the memory cells that will aid the fight against a repeat exposure. I haven't (at least yet) read anything that amounts to an immune system being less efficient if it doesn't get to exercise its abilities to an x extent.

A government driven by ideology and pathological frauds, without care for the masses. You only have a place to be used for their ends. Compassion is absent. There's no transparency as citizens are not worthy of it. We must do their bidding, whatever the science, or lack of, that drives their orders to us.

Ending of lockdown was too early if we can't get the full SAGE advice and full political conversation.

So what's the options, stay at home until October and wait until the winter to end lockdown and saturate the NHS or give it a go now when viruses are least virulent ?

Scotland only continued lockdown as they were a couple of weeks behind England regarding infection rates. They are talking of easing lockdown measures now so it looks roughly the same timing as England

Away from that, we have to strike a balance at the moment. The public would probably not accept renewal of lockdown for several additional months at a time, nor to be deprived of the coming summer weather etc - especially millions of people without their own outdoors areas to use.

It's a really difficult situation to manage, where - just in England - different areas have varied infection density and changing rates of infection infection. Other countries imposed regional restrictions that varied but these would likely have been less tolerated by people in England imo. There's been a fair surge in demand for liberty here.

I am in Paris and everyone is making the most of the lovely weather. Sunbathing in the parks. They don't seem worried about going out like many in the UK. I love the new cycle lanes they've marked on the roads in to Paris. I rode 30km in and around the centre today. Most of the shops are open. Just the bars and restaurants to open now. I hope to be able to head to the South for my holiday at the end of June, fingers crossed.

What makes you think there will be no jobs left? A lot of companies are doing record business since lockdown started if they're in the right areas, and with everyone still getting paid a decent amount there will be pent up demand for many goods and services.

That's why the stock market rebounded so well after an initial dip, the people who know arent expecting a massive downturn like we had in 2008 and we survived that.

Nine thousand Rolls Royce workers would disagree with you. I know personally two people who have lost their jobs while on furlough. Lots of small businesses will find it hard if not impossible to ride this out. Will be lots of pubs that don’t survive. Think you got your head in the sand if you think the economy will be fine after this.

Shouldn't have locked down at all.

It is the first epidemic in history which is accompanied by another epidemic – the virus of the social networks. These new media have brainwashed entire populations. What you get is fear and anxiety, and an inability to look at real data. And therefore you have all the ingredients for hysteria.

It is what is known in science as positive feedback or a snowball effect. The government is afraid of its constituents. Therefore, it implements draconian measures. The constituents look at the draconian measures and become even more hysterical. They feed each other and the snowball becomes larger and larger until you reach irrational territory. This is nothing more than a severe flu epidemic if you care to look at the numbers and the data, but people who are in a state of anxiety are blind.

There was never any choice it was always going to happen.

People forget this was always Johnson's plan as he discussed at the start of the outbreak.

They said one of the options was to flatten the curve and push it into the summer, and then achieve his herd immunity over the summer to prevent the second wave in the winter. They want 60% of the population to get covid19 this summer.

They are loving the packed beaches. They wanted the congestion charge raised and extended to make sure people get back on public transport to help keep infection rates steady over the summer up to 60%.

I cannot dispute what you're saying as I've stated similar before the lockdown. There is a problem with this as not everybody who has had the virus has produced antibodies. They should still have produced the memory cells to fight another exposure and therefore theoretically have a shorter illness but will still be infectious. If there is immunity via antibodies we don't know length of immunity. To achieve population immunity we need to know the unknown. Until then it is conjecture.

Don’t want to be rude, but anyone who thinks we aren’t heading into a major recession after the Furlough ends is pissing in the wind.

Just because staff are having 80% of their wages paid by the government doesn’t mean that the businesses themselves have any income or turnover, we could have as many as 8 million unemployed this time next year according to predictions and that is scary stuff !

It would have made more sense to lock down earlier, to have quarantined anyone flying into the country, to have recognised the severity of the disease and not left Care Homes exposed.

In terms of differing strategies in the 4 home nations, it would have made more sense to recognise that different parts are affected in different ways. England should not have one response, London was the centre of the virus for a while, but is less affected than other areas in England, so relaxation rules could apply by region.

It makes no sense whatsoever to let people travel anywhere in England for excercise. It would have been better to allow limited travel from home, perhaps 10 miles and then 25 after seeing the impact.

Sadly, the Government didn’t have a plan going into this and they most certainly don’t have one coming out of it

Shut down will not be a option, has anyone else seen the borrowing figures?

A vaccine seems unlikely within 12months or even longer.

So our only choice is to use social distancing and keep the R rating between 0.8 and 1.2 to manage hospital admissions.

With the aim of achieving a herd immunity with in the productive part of the economy.

Or we accept being 50% poorer as a nation, give up all the benefits we enjoy from our countrt/economy, including the NHS, education, law and order etc etc. ...

Surely even the dimist can appreciate that? Lol.

"Here in Wales we are still locked down and I think it's the same in Scotland.

Makes me think with such a big population in England it seems crazy that they have relaxed things earlier.

Why ?

More chance of it spreading throughout England

So what's the options, stay at home until October and wait until the winter to end lockdown and saturate the NHS or give it a go now when viruses are least virulent ?

Could of waited a couple more weeks like the rest of the UK. I think it would of saved a lot of outbreaks.

What outbreaks ?

Where are they ?

Have you been living on another planet for the last few months

How can you save on outbreaks in the past by extending the lockdown?

I don't mean the past

"The last few months" is the past.

You are confusing me now lol

Which proves to me that you don't have a clue to the nonsense you spouted:

"Could of waited a couple more weeks like the rest of the UK. I think it would of saved a lot of outbreaks." "

I still stand by it and what I mean by that is.. I think it would of prevented more cases from occurring.

We would have had to lockdown before the Chinese did

If that was the case it was already here

I’m afraid

Plus I know lots of people who have never been in locked down at all kept going to work kept shopping kept selling and moving around the country as normal

So the lockdown was a shambles from day 1

"Everyone stay inside and destroy their immune system then go out when the economy is zero no pubs open shops boarded up. Coronovirus is still around like the common cold which is the same family of viruses btw. What is better living life now or dieing indoors bored senseless. interesting that you bring up staying in and the immune system.

She went to a school/ college programme for a week just before lockdown and she got a tummy bug.. followed by a cold. doctor said it was because she had been more isolated for thr past 2 years and hadnt been exposed to things "

Of course it will you need to be outside especially in the sun getting your Vitamin D to boost your immune system

Would you like to explain how we go about destroying our immune system by staying inside? Or rather "home", which can include gardens. "

Because your not being exposed to sunlight and fresh air your cooped up inside with the same stale air .....

Cases were still occurring before some of the restrictions were lifted, so you're still wrong, it would not HAVE prevented more cases occurring. However, there may have been less cases and only a rise in numbers will suggest that in time to come.

Does it matter what the government says, the idiots are taking no notice now !

Even if the pubs open tomorrow I am not going, not going on holiday and keeping away from everyone anyway; this bloody virus is not going away anytime soon, and as for the miracle of a vaccine, if and when it is found do you think the normal people will get it anytime before 2021 ?

That's why I included gardens (they tend to be outside ). I wanted to know whether the poster was confusing the stay home mantra with stay inside.

Professor Paul Moynagh, Immunologist, National University of Ireland, speaking on RTE Radio One 2020-05-02:

"When I look at the effects of lockdown – I’m surprised and disappointed in terms of the relatively small effect that lockdown has had ... So in terms of the effectiveness of lockdown, and it being justified to close down the entire economy – I think there has to be a discussion."

Johan Giesecke Professor at the Karolinska Institute Medical University in Stockholm, former Swedish State Epidemiologist and author of a standard epidemiology text book, writing in the Lancet on 2020-05-05:

"It has become clear that a hard lockdown does not protect old and frail people living in care homes — a population the lockdown was designed to protect.

Neither does it decrease mortality from COVID-19, which is evident when comparing the UK's experience with that of other European countries."

Dr Gérard Krause head of Department for Epidemiology at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection in Braunschweig

"We have to keep these serious social measures as short and as low as possible, because they could potentially cause more illnesses and deaths than the coronavirus itself."

Professor Dr. Frank Ulrich Montgomery is former President of the German Medical Association and Deputy Chairman of the World Medical Association.

"I’m not a fan of lockdown. Anyone who imposes something like this must also say when and how to pick it up again. ...

Italy has imposed a lockdown and has the opposite effect. They quickly reached their capacity limits, but did not slow down the virus spread within the lockdown."

Dr Eran Bendavid and Dr Jay Bhattacharya are professors of medicine and public health at Stanford University:

"A universal quarantine may not be worth the costs it imposes on the economy, community and individual mental and physical health"

Dr Richard Schabas is the former Chief Medical Officer of Ontario, Medical Officer of Hastings and Prince Edward Public Health and Chief of Staff at York Central Hospital.

"I am not preaching complacency. This disease is not going away any time soon; we should expect more cases and more local outbreaks...

but we also need to be sensible. Quarantine belongs back in the Middle Ages. Save your masks for robbing banks. Stay calm and carry on. Let’s not make our attempted cures worse than the disease."

The German Network for Evidence-Based Medicine is an association of about 1000 German scientists, researchers and medical professionals founded to promote evidence-based and patient-oriented medicine

"A Cochrane Review from 2011 found no robust evidence for the effectiveness of border control screenings or social distancing.

...A systematic review from 2015 found moderate evidence that school closures delay the spread of an influenza epidemic, but at high cost.

Isolation at home slows down the spread of influenza but leads to increased infection of family members"

Dr Anders Tegnell is a Swedish physician and State Epidemiologist of the Public Health Agency of Sweden since 2013.

"Older people or people with previous health problems should be isolated as much as possible. ... That is the one rule. The other is:

Anyone with symptoms should stay at home immediately, even with the slightest cough.

If you follow these two rules, you don’t need any further measures, the effect of which is only very marginal anyway"

Dr Sucharit Bhakdi is a specialist in microbiology and infection epidemiology. He is emeritus professor at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz.

(The German government’s anti-COVID19 measures) ...

"are grotesque, absurd and very dangerous...The life expectancy of millions is being shortened. The horrifying impact on the world economy threatens the existence of countless people."

Professor Gupta the Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at Oxford University

"Remaining in a state of lockdown is extremely dangerous from the point of view of the vulnerability of the entire population to new pathogens..... I think it is very dangerous to talk about lockdown without recognising the enormous costs that it has on other vulnerable sectors in the population"

etc etc. etc.

"It would have made more sense to lock down earlier, to have quarantined anyone flying into the country, to have recognised the severity of the disease and not left Care Homes exposed.

Sadly, the Government didn’t have a plan going into this and they most certainly don’t have one coming out of it "

I'm communicating in the same tense as you. You state "would of" instead of "would have" and I'm responding with "would not have" alongside a rationale as to why. However, if you are correct, we have yet to see the evidence (as cases are continuing at a low rate).

My opinion on lockdown

The Economy needs to Re-open as soon as possible and the government plan is to do that..their isn’t a vaccine coming in the next 6 month and they are not going to keep shuffling shut that long...

So point I’m making is all those in the Very High risk should stay home and the rest carry on

Coz if boris said tomorrow lockdown over what’s changed from the first day nothing only that he said...we will all get it and the strong will survive
