I’ve been keeping myself busy since the start of lockdown and I have been taking the dogs for really long walks so they’re tired....... only thing is I don’t. I’m awake most of the night and it’s starting to get to me.

Has anyone got any ideas about how to relax..... serious ones please x I’m not a big fan of tablets either.

TIA you lovely peeps xxxx

Manchester (she/her)

High intensity cardio to wear you out.

Meditation.

A night time routine. Look into sleep hygiene.

Low adrenaline things towards the end of the evening, and dim lights, that help slow your thinking down.

I’ve been using a soothing white noise kind of thing that has helped a little; not been drinking and has a hot shower too x

I read (actually listened on audible) to Limmys book last week, he suffers from mental health issues that he quite open about. He found meditating really works for him and dealing with his own issues. His advice just find a quiet room, sit comfortably and try and just breathe and concentrate on the breathing. Obviously you should try to empty your thoughts etc... but he said with practice it really helped him calm down and get rid of negative thoughts.

I’m still practicing myself but I have found just before bedtime, it does help clear out some negativity I’ve been feeling and helped me to sleep.

Stop using your phone an hour before bed. Turn off all electronics, and read or meditate about 30 minutes before bed.

If you aren't asleep within 30 minutes of being in bed, get up and go back into another room.

Ideally your bedroom should be for sleeping only.

This came up in Google

It works for me .....

Immerse your face in cold water

Just when you thought splashing cold water on your face would wake you up, it actually can put you to sleep! Known as the Mammalian Reflex or Response[2], immersing your face in cold water for 30 seconds will lower your heart rate and narrow your blood vessels, causing reduced blood flow to the limbs and reserving more for the brain and heart. It basically signals your body into a relaxed hibernation mode. The colder the water, the faster the heart rate will slow. Brrrr

I’ll check that too; might try with earphones though........ the dogs tend to start barking and growling at everything and nothing

Interesting view on a swingers site - your bedroom is for sleeping only

Suggest you cut out caffeine - tea and coffee - in the evening. Helped me overcome my insomnia.

I find thinking up a scenario before falling asleep really helps. Nothing to do with work or anything. A project or a hobby you’d think of doing. Maybe it’s rebuilding the house. Something that’ll take your mind of daily stresses.

ASMR

Thousands of ASMR "artists" videos on YouTube using dozens of different triggers that can relax and send you off to sleep. All you need are a set of good quality headphones and flick through various videos, shut your eyes, recline back and see if you get the tingles from any of the trigger sounds.

I use ASMR most days after a nightshift and I rarely last 10 minutes before I'm asleep.

Thanks everyone for some good suggestions; I’ve been trying the soothing white noise/ASMR and it’s varying success.

I don’t do caffeine or drink booze on a ‘school night’ .

I’ll try the yoga and cold water trick

kildare

Take up a physically demanding hobby or craft

Get an anvil hammer and steel or leather and leather working tools or woodworking or sheet of copper and copper working tools

YouTube will show you how to do everything

Brain occupied plus hard work equals sleeping like a baby

I've found that listening to some soothing or classical music while reading a book helps. Hope you get things sorted OP. Xx
