We have the new mantra which has been explained and been in existence for nearly week but is it clear? Could you explain it to someone else?

Masked and Distant

1. Stay alert.

Remember to stay 2m away from others not in your house.

Remember to keep your hands clean.

Dont forget theres a virus about.

Think about what you can and can't do.

2. Control the virus.

Follow step 1. above and it will get R down and control the virus.

3. Save Lives

Do number 1, resulting in 2 means less people will get the virus which means less people will die.

Stay home.

Protect the NHS.

Save lives.

This is a simple mantra whose purpose was to encourage suppression of transmission of the virus as not to overload NHS capacity. In the process saving lives.

You can read the mantra as a sentence or take the elements individually, and understand them. It was clear what was required.

It's apparent a new mantra was needed as we enter a new phase but the mantra fails IMO.

Stay alert (to me that suggests meercat style, not something you can sleep, breathe, eat and shit out). It cannot exist without clarification.

Control the virus (errrm is that like you putting a silver Cross in front of a vampire and shouting stay back?).

Save lies (phew an easy one but how do you do that - as a meercat with a silver cross?).

Masked and Distant

Each in turn then.

1. Stay alert

Are you aware of the following.

There there is a worldwide pandemic?

Governments have put control measures in place?

People are dying from it?

Social distancing?

Hand cleanliness?

Working from home if you can?

Not visiting others?

You are allowed to travel to excercise?

If you are aware of all the above, and they are in your thoughts when you are doing things, then you are alert.

No meerkat style standing outside you house required, or selling of insurance

Stay alert = stay compliant. Continue to follow the rules of hand hygiene, 2m social distancing, work from home.

Control the virus = suppress transmission (or keep transmission low). This highlights easing of restrictions but the above rules stay as they are - then you can explain what the new steps involve and why.

Again the Save lives

The point I'm making is that you need a damn manual for stay alert. As a mantra it sucks.

Catchy, memorable, simplistic, not needing a manual to clarify, unambiguous.

First mantra - success.

Second mantra - fail.

it doesn’t matter what the government pick or what someone else suggests, if you want to pick it apart it to criticise it will always be possible,

if you apply some common sense and have any knowledge of the virus (if you use any medium the mantra is shared on it would be hard not to), that is also possible

people have chosen which side they want to be on

I saw a porn site which had climbed on the COVID-19 bandwagon and had a slogan that read

"Stay Safe - Stay at home and wank"

It's really sad when a porn site slogan doesn't just make more sense, is less open to interpretation but is also easier to get behind than advice from the government

Coming out of lockdown is a lot harder than going in as it has to be done in much smaller steps. As said above if you want to pull a message apart you will regardless of what it is. Some common sense and taking responsibility would not go amiss.

That is not what the vast majority of people I saw in my local park doing , ‘where possible’ to them was completely the opposite, however the park was empty 2 weeks ago. Can you explain ‘where possible ‘ why this might be the case?

because people have choices available to them and unfortunately many of them are selfish , if people choose to ignore the meaning or misinterpret something because it suits their agenda and they choose to head off outside and hang about a park because they would rather do that than continue to be home, it doesn’t suggest the meaning of “where possible” has changed or is not clear

You have to stop and think well I do .

How easy we just follow all the rules, no matter how often they change them. No discussion no questions asked just a bunch of people who meet up don't keep minutes then tell 70 million people how to live. The world's gone mad, take away your rights and freedom and we just say ok whatever you say. What's your name again and who are you, oh it doesn't matter we believe you. Makes you think.

i dont think it would have mattered who was in power ... there will always be people that dont want to be home and they will always find a way to justify it to themselves

there would also always be the people (from both sides) that want to bash it for politics

its literally a no win scenario

you put out a slogan and it will be too vague

you publish a 50 page document and it will be too much detail for people to sift through to, or still have gaps to others, wont make sense to a 3rd group because despite it being incredibly clear, only some elements suited them and what they were hoping to happen wasn't included

for the most part when i read “i don't understand” and then look at the context and the rest of the comment round about those words, it actually either means “i dont agree”, or “it wasn't what i hoped for/expected”, or “my personal opinion is in conflict”

whats that saying about pleasing the people?

Really? the meaning of ‘stay at home’ was very clear and the vast majority of people did as requested, why have those very same people now decided to go to the park in groups, drinking and socialising with friends? What has changed ?

people make common sense decisions to protect themselves and their families every day without their being an explicit government instruction or law in place ... for example ...

you lock your door to protect yourself from intruders

we dont always cross the road at a crossing when there is a green man showing but we most likely instead look both ways and wait til it is safe

you keep harmful objects out of reach/ access of the kids , bleach has a hard to open cap, but how many of you also keep it in a cabinet with a child lock

advice is 3 meals a day but you don’t starve your kids at bedtime if they already had their 3 and tell you they are hungry again

general advice is to take 10000 steps a day but someone with a broken leg will probably sit that one out

why has ability to make any decision for ourselves gone out the window with this virus , the reason we are not getting a one size fits all instruction is because one size does not fit all and we need to apply the rules to our own situation

This bit! Remember all the buggers going to the pub right up until the last night they closed? They were saying I'll stop going when boris shuts them.

No one really has complained since they shut.

Now take masks for instance...most people that have half an ounce of common sense know they stop the spread of the infection if we all wear a face covering

of some sort. If the government said confined spaces need a mask..most would comply.

What we need is clear messages putting out there to begin with.

i could add where possible into every single one of those examples, it wouldn’t change the common sense approach or the point i was getting at , I’m not sure why people are so pedantically hung upon it

this must be one of the only times on this forum i have seen people trying their hardest to make it seem like they are less intelligent than they actually are ... its normally pretending to know and understand everything

"people make common sense decisions to protect themselves and their families every day without their being an explicit government instruction or law in place ... for example ...

you lock your door to protect yourself from intruders

we dont always cross the road at a crossing when there is a green man showing but we most likely instead look both ways and wait til it is safe

you keep harmful objects out of reach/ access of the kids , bleach has a hard to open cap, but how many of you also keep it in a cabinet with a child lock

advice is 3 meals a day but you don’t starve your kids at bedtime if they already had their 3 and tell you they are hungry again

general advice is to take 10000 steps a day but someone with a broken leg will probably sit that one out

why has ability to make any decision for ourselves gone out the window with this virus , the reason we are not getting a one size fits all instruction is because one size does not fit all and we need to apply the rules to our own situation

Of course, and it is paramount we follow the governments advice ‘where possible’ . Don’t use public transport ‘where possible’ hasn’t worked out very well either

i could add where possible into every single one of those examples, it wouldn’t change the common sense approach or the point i was getting at , I’m not sure why people are so pedantically hung upon it

this must be one of the only times on this forum i have seen people trying their hardest to make it seem like they are less intelligent than they actually are ... its normally pretending to know and understand everything "

I have my own understanding of what ‘where possible ‘ means, you have yours, and millions of people have theirs. That is the problem, there should be only one meaning when it comes to a government message, are all those people in the park selfish and stupid? Are all those people cramming into public transport going to work selfish and stupid?

then you need to consult a dictionary rather than the government because it only has one meaning , the subjective part comes only when considering your personal scenario , not the meaning of where possible

majority of the people in the park are being selfish and stupid yeah (it would be possible for them to stay home more often they just managed it for weeks or it would be possible for them to meet that one family member in another outside location that isnt a hotspot for everyone to congregate in)

the majority using transport to commute have no other option (ie it is not possible to avoid)

Masked and Distant

Where possible has to be included, it's not vague. It's only vague if people make it vague.

Work from home - where possible. Pretty straight forward to me. Unless a brick layer is going to send each brick and mortar by post he cant work from home. An office admin clerk with internet access and a computer can work from home.

I don't do either of those jobs so I'm really confused. Should I go to work or stay home?

Still trying to find what shoes the government says I can wear.

Life is too difficult without instructions.

"Each in turn then.

The point I'm making is that you need a damn manual for stay alert. As a mantra it sucks.

What mantra would you suggest?"

Stay compliant.

Suppress transmission.

Save lives.

What mantra would you suggest?

it doesn’t matter what the government pick or what someone else suggests, if you want to pick it apart it to criticise it will always be possible,

if you apply some common sense and have any knowledge of the virus (if you use any medium the mantra is shared on it would be hard not to), that is also possible

people have chosen which side they want to be on "

Sides?

How daft. I'm hardly making it political by saying good first mantra, poor second mantra.

Your missing some very key words that the government are using when describing there mantra , ‘where possible’ . Would you agree that ‘where possible’ is vague and open to misinterpretation?

where possible ...

if it is possible do it

if it is not possible dont do it

what is unclear about that ? is the countries grasp on our own language really that poor ?

That is not what the vast majority of people I saw in my local park doing , ‘where possible’ to them was completely the opposite, however the park was empty 2 weeks ago. Can you explain ‘where possible ‘ why this might be the case?

because people have choices available to them and unfortunately many of them are selfish , if people choose to ignore the meaning or misinterpret something because it suits their agenda and they choose to head off outside and hang about a park because they would rather do that than continue to be home, it doesn’t suggest the meaning of “where possible” has changed or is not clear

Really? the meaning of ‘stay at home’ was very clear and the vast majority of people did as requested, why have those very same people now decided to go to the park in groups, drinking and socialising with friends? What has changed ? "

The mantra and explication of isn't clear to many people.

What did people think "stay alert" meant before the explanation was given? Be on your guard, be watchful comes to my mind. These aren't pertinent to the crisis. Be mindful is or cautious or compliant (as in continuing to follow precautions/rules).

you dont understand it ?

or you understand it perfectly but believe it is a cop out?

you cant stick with “stay at home” while encouraging some sectors back to work and telling people you are started to phase opening schools, it would be entirely contradictory

Don’t use public transport ‘where possible’ hasn’t worked out very well either

i could add where possible into every single one of those examples, it wouldn’t change the common sense approach or the point i was getting at , I’m not sure why people are so pedantically hung upon it

this must be one of the only times on this forum i have seen people trying their hardest to make it seem like they are less intelligent than they actually are ... its normally pretending to know and understand everything

Well put indeed

I often wonder if it was one of the other parties in power saying exactly the same thing if those complaining would suddenly understand

And you wouldn't understand then eh

I would understand no matter what party or individual set out the advice.

I don't look at it with a political view just look at the advice and implement it.

If jerremy was in power I would not loose the ability to understand and take responsible actions

i live in scotland and didn’t vote for bojo or sturgeon and haven’t lost the ability to read an comprehend either

That’s because you don’t have to try and follow his Mantra, Scotland wisely stayed with the original

And yet she can still understand the advice given. She does not understand because Scotland has not changed, she understands because she has the ability to read advice and apply it to her circumstances.

I may be making assumptions on her behalf and if I'm incorrect on my assumptions I will of course apologise to her"

got it in 1

just because it doesn't apply to me , doesnt mean i cant take it in and understand it

actually if anything im supposed to listen to 2 conflicting sources and decipher which is more applicable to me (the uk updates are not entirely based on england for example furlough updates are uk wide)

To be honest I wouldn't care if the mantra was

Beanz

Meanz

Heinz

I think the government has a responsibility to the vulnerable, those whose cognition is poor, those who are anxious (and other groups). Anxiety raises the hormone cortisol, cortisol impedes cognition. So those of you with the attitude of "well I can comprehend so fuck you jack" or "take personal responsibility", STOP! Think of those less fortunate than yourselves.

you realise your alternative choice of words are also open to interpretation so just because you think they are better for these less fortunate folk you are apparently looking out for, it doesn't mean they actually are

if that really is your issue then why not suggest a help line is opened where people can ask for specific clarification personal to their situation ... all anyone wants to do is find problems and bitch and moan, nobody seems interested in solutions

I'm not suggesting my words are better, I'm simply showing I've given it some thought and stating why I've given it that thought. It's given me the ability to clarify some of the issues I've heard about so can do so if I come across people having problems comprehending. As for bitching and moaning, ha! Some people just don't know how to debate

The government would do well to remember the words of Douglas Adams

“A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.”

Because as George Carlin said

“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

You won't think this applies to you of course because

"When you're dead, you don't know that you're dead. It's difficult only for the others. It's the same when you are stupid."

‘the subjective part comes only when considering your personal scenario ‘ Is exactly what everyone is currently doing . Let’s be absolutely honest, the government no longer wants to take responsibility for people’s actions so the words ‘where possible ‘ have been used as a cop out and a way of preventing any blame being directed towards them . They could stuck with the original ‘mantra’ just like the rest of the UK have

I'd say that everyone has a different idea about what is possible and what isn't. It all depends on your values and priorities.

Your truth is your truth, and no one can change that but it's important to remember that you are just one person among billions, quite insignificant really, as we all are.

agreed “is something possible”is subjective, ive already said that further up ... everyones situation is different and that is a question

do something “where possible” is the step that applies to the result of that question and it has only one meaning

Not really, by the very definition if something isn’t impossible it’s possible. It comes down to what you’re prepared to trade off in order to be able to do it. That will change depending on the person.

"We have the new mantra which has been explained and been in existence for nearly week but is it clear? Could you explain it to someone else? "

Yes it's clear, for months people have been shouting about having a grown up conversation, but when the government treats us like adults they are told it is too complicated and needs explaining.

Up in Scotland the first Minister treats the population like infants and no one complains, the same happens in Wales.

What are the government to make of that, perhaps forget about treating the population as adult treat them like infants and do what you want!
