Apparently, Mr Johnson has stayed today that there may never be a vaccine for this virus or it will be a long time in coming and therefore restrictions will be in force for the long haul.

We could be heading for a dictatorship style government if we are not careful, imagine no vaccine for over the next five years, then no general election could take place and he stays in power......

So what's your alternative suggestions for managing a virus we still don't have any preemptive response for? Herd immunity will help, but that will take time unless you want the hospital's overflowing.

all loved up

They could do an election remotely to be fair.

My week this week is mostly helping old and special needs people to learn to access remote services.

We always knew a vaccine was unlikely but put simply. People will not stay away from others indefinitely.

The government are going to have to make a very difficult choice between lockdown and getting the country running again economically (which is a choice I do not envy) but lockdown cannot continue for eternity otherwise the country will enter social disobediance and chaos

And what is different anywhere else in the world if no vaccine is found? Restrictions will be in globally for years so get used to it just like the whole world will have to until a vaccine is hopefully found and widely distributed. Worry about the tragic loss of life around the globe rather than fears of a 'dictatorship' ! We aren't N.Korea just yet so maybe cherish your freedom

This government had since Januray to deal with this but as per usual don't. Also they can't keep the lockdown going as more and more people are seeing there civil liberality being eroded away. What we need is commen sense which sadly our government are severely lacking of.

He is right, it could take 10 years to develop a vaccine and even then it is not sure it wont work, this new reality of life could last that long too which is kind of a lockdown but with more freedom, we might never come back to how it was, those with underlying conditions will be more at risk, the best someone can do is to work on their immune system.

As I mentioned many weeks ago now passive immunization is one option if successful in transferring the antibodies. Which is what they are doing tests for now with plasma from those who've recovered from covid 19.

Other route which has been researched for years already is identifying those with predisposition to sepsis and similar conditions.

Identifying those with highest risk would mean quicker treatment to prevent the need for critical care. The person will know if they have symptoms to seek care sooner than later knowing they are of higher risk.

Time is what will save more people as it stands people who have this predisposition have waited till it's already severe before calling an ambulance or making their way to a hospital. By then it can be too late.

Reaction and proactive response to those who need the care will mean this virus won't have as devastating impact.

Government should be investing in other ways than relying on a vaccine that they still haven't been able to do for sars.

Medical records of sepsis cases can be traced and their families informed. Ones who haven't been recorded as having sepsis or have yet to suffer with it will still be at risk. But using the knowledge of tracing family lines can help identify those at risk and to aid the research already going on DNA samples sent for further study.

"Johnson isn't particularly known for reliability or truth. I have more faith in some vaccine developments coming to fruition. "

Edinburgh university being uks foremost sepsis research facility. That already has mass DNA libraries already and using the covid 19 specimens could help identify further markers in the genomes.

I'd suspect even collaboration with Italy also. Genetic predisposition research has proven fruitful for the likes of breast cancer, diabetes and familial hypercholesterolemia (genetic condition causing high cholesterol which reduces life expectancy by 20-30 years) as well as other genetic conditions.

How many of you heard of FH?

So it gives light to the fact with more data highlighting those predisposed can then pinpoint in the genetic code quicker who does and does not have this risk and providing treatment sooner rather than later. Vaccine or not knowing who is at risk and why is better than guessing and the wait and see approach.

There has never been a vaccine doing for this type of virus. Life has always been risky...just ask a barebacker. Lol. In the end, whenever we come out of hiding, it will be a risk. I still think it's mad they are saying go to work before you see your family. Never mind seeking an exit from loneliness. It will be scary for a while..as scary as history

Approximately 38 million people globally living with HIV, 17 million are women, 1.7 million are children.

Reason men are more susceptible via actions used during sex. Anal sex causes microtears in the tissue and viral transference occurs via entering the micro tears or blood entering through tissue under the glands with foreskin or urethra.

Women arent as susceptible as the vagina is a self cleansing organ the ph and secretions help preventing infection but microtears can occur vaginally. Women practicing anal is also a large impact on infection.

So yes indeed more men are affected by HIV but women aren't too far behind over 19 million men, 17 million women. So really is it only a priority for gay men?

Doesn't take an IQ to see this just an open mind. HIV isnt the "gay disease"

Just small minded people think that being hetero keeps you safe.

People are living in fear waiting for a cure when there is none. Part of me thinks our way if living has become too clean and risk averse and the germs are just fighting back. Humanity has survived all sorts of atrocity and anguish throughout the centuries but they have always fucked and fought, lived and died their way out of it. We have to emerge sometime..but when? Certainly not til a mythical vaccine is available

That’s what I’m hoping for as well.

It may not die completely, but it could get to a stage where the infections are so low they it doesn’t pose the level of risk we have at the moment.

Absolutely true. We are constantly hearing that if it saves just one life then let's have this safety protocol or camera or whatever ..then a virus arrives and hell breaks loose .. there's obviously a risk with the virus but the response is to hid at home and let the world end.

Vaccine will be produced by an Organization called ID2020 sponsored by Rockefeller and Gates Foundation.

Vaccine will come with a biometric chip.

i dont particulary like bill gates as he has a bit of a god complex but f u think we are all gona be chipped ya need to give your head a wobble.simples if you think your gona be tracked where ever you go then dont have a vaccine IF they come up with one.myself i will have one if they cine up with one jst will wait a year or two first my reason id rather wait and see if it has side effects and what they might be before i make up my mind about it but if u think we all gina be chipped you need to stay out of the sun or at least wear a hat

"Apparently, Mr Johnson has stayed today that there may never be a vaccine for this virus or it will be a long time in coming and therefore restrictions will be in force for the long haul.

"

Right in the beginning of this crisis, the scientific/medical professional community discussed this whole issue and the emphasis was always on finding a treatment first.

So with every death and every success a picture is built up with what works as a treatment and not.

For some reason the tin hat brigade spurred on by the media went after the vaccine when in fact it may be many decades before anything comes from a vaccine, remember HIV/AIDS vaccine well that has been ongoing for nearly 40 years. Personally I think it was to give people hope.

So the whole lock down was to allow for some sort of understanding of the virus, how it works and a treatment and boy have we come a long way in 2 months.

At some point the government will relent to ongoing demands to go back to work and in future perhaps the young will ask why? For now though a treatment plan is still the only way forward to get out of this lockdown!

"Successful treatment ie successful antiviral is what we have to hope for. That's what the gay community is still looking for, how many year's have they been waiting?

Gay? Do you mean for HIV?

He cant help himself - he’s from Weston - they don’t believe straight people can get hiv there!

If he does mean HIV then he's wrong. Unless he thinks being gay is a virus There is no HIV vaccine as most people know, and I know gay is not a virus but anyone with an IQ above 5 knows it affects the gay community more.

Some people on here are assholes not sure if born that way or went to night school to perfect it. "

So you're changing your stance from no antiviral to no vaccine now you know you're wrong.

YOU were in the wrong to label a community instead of a virus since that's what's being discussed.

"The 68-69 Hong Kong flu pandemic killed 80,000 in the UK with a significanty smaller population than we have now. That virus is still around today"

The flu vaccinations are included for Hong Kong flu - h3n2

Indeed it's still prevalent

Quadrivalent vaccine contains vaccines for h1n1 - swine flu, h3n2 - Hong Kong flu categorised as flu type A and contains 2 type B flu one being described as wild type.

Can find out all the different types of influenza viruses from the influenza research database.

Can even see where the sources of samples the virus came from and which strains the vaccines are based on.

The Colorado influenza type b vaccine was done from samples taken from a man aged 95 flu season 2016/2017 with dates and lineage of the sample with sequencing dates for the genetic identification of the virus.

Isn't it amazing what you can learn

Absolutely

Just like the fact that smallpox hasn't been eradicated - simply cos there are two live samples in two labs apparently .

I do think those samples are being kept if, although presumably not expected, an outbreak occurs.

Oh god if only the world knew about every single pathogen they have in the vaults would scare the world. Every specimen taken is stored including the vaccine for it. Every year they switch out vaccine strains to one's they think are relevant and taking samples from people and using that single sample to create a new vaccine. They even have long gone specimens of every pathogen discovered. Especially with the ice caps melting dormant pathogens are now resurfacing.

They house some of the most lethal pathogens known to man because it's a safety net if an outbreak occurs they have references and even already produced vaccines and treatment waiting.

The database has the whos recommendations for flu vaccines going back to 1974. With each strain and where the strain sample was found and the vaccine to go with it.

Spanish flu practically killed itself out, those who gained immunity were left with devastating loss in the communities.

If it wasn't for the movement of troops the death toll of the virus would have been much smaller and contained.

Thankfully their ability to travel was quite restricted compared to now. If Spanish flu occur now I'd calculate the numbers would drastically kill most of the global population just by ease of transport alone. Very few people surviving that era have immunity to Spanish flu because they were never exposed. The flu was fast and highly contagious limiting spread it wasn't a smart virus it incapacitated it's victims quickly preventing any travel which would have been lengthy to any destination by that time they would have died. Troop movement was the sole reason it took 2 years to die out and the spread of it.

Logical? What about all the viruses that haven't died out, like meningitis, encephalitis as examples.

As for Spanish flu, I've just read it died out due to people having died from it or survived it and became immune.

Current h1n1 strain isn't the same strain. Viruses mutate producing different strains of the same virus. Just as there's several covid19 strains now. Which is why database of samples is crucial in keeping up with strains.

They produce vaccines on what they have currently showing the most prevalent. Spanish flu died out its mutations has not. Vaccine for a current h1n1 viral outbreak more than likely wouldn't have any success if you could go back in time and vaccinate everyone. This is the problem they have with vaccination for covid19 the mutations. Same virus different mutations changes everything = new strain same virus.

The 1918 influenza pandemic: Lessons for 2009 and the future

A very long academic read. Interestingly it has been hypothesised that the h1n1 Spanish flu originated in birds whereas the h1n1 in swine. The flu epidemics of the 50s and 60s are thought to come from the spanish flu.

Making a vaccine mandatory when one doesn't exist is a moot point.

Aaaaaaand, nothing in that quote suggests mandating a vaccine. It more likely implies a huge uptake.

E.g. using h1n1 to date number of pure strains catalogued - 43080.

Not every strain discovered has a vaccine and not every strain needed a new vaccine created as a previous vaccine worked for the strain found.

So some vaccines may work, some need new vaccines, some there wasn't a vaccine available to prevent it because the strain was isolated but incase one is needed the strain sample is stored.

With covid19 knowing most of the coronaviruses don't have any potential for a vaccine due to mutations between the different coronaviruses and of the individual viruses and the rapid mutation of covid19 and the ability to produce strong antibodies makes it impossible, will have to see what future strains of covid19 show to aid a vaccine.

Canine coronavirus has a vaccine but that virus is completely different even though it is a coronavirus. It's as different as all the influenza types and strains are different to each other as this virus is different to all other coronaviruses.

If there is no vaccine then they will eventually have to accept that only the vulnerable need to isolate. The young and healthy can get back to life as normal since catching it is very unlikely to be a problem.

Thank you acknowledgement is much appreciated

2015 flu vaccine contained vaccines for 3 strains of h3n2. It was a 5 strain vaccine that year.

This year's is as I stated above

Influenza A sample taken Brisbane 2018 h1n1

A taken Kansas 2017 h3n2

B taken Colorado 2017

B taken phuket 2013 wild type. This one usually get every year.

Unless other strains show up in the coming months this is what multi vaccine goes in production for this coming flu season. Based on the who's recommendations.

Most people don't know much about the flu jab they get every year.

They just get it because they are told to.

Most don't even realise summer flu is the same viruses that come around in winter it's just not transmitted easily in summer. Basing their knowledge of what's currently spreading albeit minimally they can predict the majority for winter.

2018 had high cases of flu fatalities blamed ineffective vaccine. What it was was wrong strains vaccinated against. They got it wrong with their predictions. Then top that off end of summer the flu season started early before any vaccinations were given or even produced.

So a bad mortality rate for 2017/2018 winter and then rapid spread of flu before the 2018/2019 vaccinations.

I was one who caught it 7 weeks I was sick. Can tell you now I'd rather catch the flu after having the vaccine than before it. I've had flu several times in my life I thought they were bad with the vaccine now I shall be getting the vaccine every year without fail now. It doesn't stop you getting the virus it preps your body to survive the virus.

People still die with vaccines it isn't a magic cure. Any vaccinated against virus can overwhelm the body, vaccine just tries to prepare you for it.

It's a head start in a race thats all if you trip and fall that virus catches up and can overtake you. The best analogy I can give to explain a vaccine simply.

Ok you don't believe me.

Listen to our most trusted and qualified vaccine expert, Bill Gates, "But for the world at large, normalcy only returns when we've largely vaccinated the entire global population."

That's an exact quote, look it up if you don't believe me.

ah bill gates said did he.a private individual who dosent run any countrys and last time i checked didnt rule the world.oh it must be true i didnt realise he could tell us all what to do and he must be obeyed.who knew eh"

He's not been voted in, it's more self appointed with no medical qualifications.

Money talks as they say.

Even IF there was a viable vaccine, what about when the virus mutates, or becomes less effective to virus as vaccines can do?

It would be yearly.

But that is if there was ever one .

Interestingly (or not!) there is still no vaccine against SARS despite the mass panic in many countries when that epidemic hit

In fact there are still no antivirals approved for treating cases either

But SARS seems to have largely disappeared

"The 68-69 Hong Kong flu pandemic killed 80,000 in the UK with a significanty smaller population than we have now. That virus is still around today

And I must say you are a learned lady.

Thank you for your informative posts.

The best analogy I can give to explain a vaccine simply."

These are great and truly informative posts which as we all know is a rare thing on fab!

I too have been having the flu jab for the last five years and it has improved my quality of life enormously so all I can say to the flat earther anti vaccine posts are you are wrong headed fools

Wakefield

There is currently no vaccine available that will prevent HIV infection yet research has been going on since the 1980s and the hope is on may be developed by 2030.

Vaccines are not the only way to treat infections the earliest treatments will likely be antiviral drugs used to treat other conditions. It is possible that blood plasma from people who have recovered from COVID-19 could be effective. Immune suppressants could help in some cases as could many other treatments.

Thank you, vaccines save so many people's lives. Without the vaccines millions of people's lives would be lost.

The first successful influenza vaccine was created about 1944, influenza was identified in 1933. Military were the first given the vaccine in 1945 and the public 1946. Before this they used live attenuated vaccines then inactivated vaccines even if they weren't as successful it was a building block to success.

No one wanted a repeat of Spanish flu but they didn't know what they were looking at at the time. It took them till the 1930s to know what they were looking at. Science in all its glory and we have modern science but somethings will take time for technology to be more advanced in order to solve the problems.

It took nearly 20 years for a successful vaccine against a flu virus. They didn't give up and now able to make thousands of different vaccines to treat the strains of flu.

It's entirely possible a breakthrough will provide the answer to covid19 vaccine it could happen this year or next, it may take 20 years, 50 years or even never to find one. Only time will tell. May have the right technology one day to crack the coronavirus code.

I will add I could have been one of these antivaxers, my child had the mmr, was perfectly normal babbling baby before having it. Had the mmr and suffered badly, fever that wouldn't subside for days even with calpol and other meds. My child never babbled after that, at a year and a half still no babbling. Started speech therapy, they checked to see if my child was deaf, hearing was perfectly fine. My child has issues like me with infections. I believe the mmr triggered an immune overreaction and it's entirely possible all those other children were the same. If I'd have known it would happen would I have let my child have the mmr, yes I would have and my child had every single immunization since. If the doctors would have listened when I told them the fever wouldn't come down if I'd have known id have been straight down a and e and refused to move till my child was out of danger.

Took my child to the age of 4 to talk even then was less than 10 words. Age 6 diagnosed autistic with ADHD. Do I blame the vaccine? No I don't. Did the vaccine trigger it? Yes. Whose to blame? The doctors who kept telling me to just keep giving calpol. If they could have treated at the time the damage wouldn't have been so severe, could have been a child like every other.

Before people wonder why I'd give my child vaccines even if I'd known the outcome, a living child is better outcome than a dead child.

So these antivaxers need to realise these vaccines protect their children from deadly diseases.

Measles death rate is 15% (measles pneumonia 28%)

Mumps death rate varies 1 to 5% and 25% of mumps cases suffer aseptic meningitis.

Rubella mortality is more unborn fetuses and causing birth defects. So even though mortality rates isn't prime reason for rubella vaccine the long term effects that inflict suffering and affect quality of life are. 20% of rubella infections in pregnant women the foetus dies.

Anyone who doesn't think a vaccine is worth the risk hasn't understood the risks the viruses have. What could be worse than dead?

Boris is dealing with the cards he’s been given, they took advise from specialist science which has backfired, but!!!

Let’s not forget how many people in this country flaunted the lockdown over the first two weeks, attitudes towards this pandemic was in young and healthy, I am not worried, I’m still going to play football with my mates...

That attitude didn’t help, yes we’ve made mistakes, yes we weren’t as prepared as we would have liked.

Inoculation against Trump is brewing will see next election if it's successful, all this toxic stupidity he spouts is an immunization in itself. People waking up to how profoundly inept he is. That's if he doesn't kill them off with stupidity, bleach IV, Borax inhalers anyone? Gotta disinfect out that covid19 trump says so.

I agree, all this Boris Bashing is boring, it doesn't matter who is PM they would get the same negative treatment on here. Every country has made mistakes because we are all learning how to live/deal with covid-19, people are dying whether countries are in or out of lockdown but the theatre news is unfortunately addictive

Actually what lawyers do is spot bullshit and make a good job of exposing lies for what they are. In short Boris's worst nightmare.

There's an old addage that a good lawyer doesn't ask a question that he or she doesn't already know the answer to. Boris is now caught between the two horrible choices of admitting to the awful truth or telling what will now be made into an obvious lie.

Boris is less like a PM and more like a guilty criminal on the stand.

Lawyer Starmer does not cum up with solutions. He was screaming for the exit strategy so once it was revealed he could say oh that is wrong and know he was not responsible"

I'll be having some fun with you on the forum

Hindsight is irrelevant. The government sent a fuckload of infections back to care homes and now they have killed about 20,000 as a direct result. It's not Keir Starmer's job to prevent genocide. It is his job to demand answers when the PM's incompetence/indifference (choose your own) turns into mass slaughter.

Go on, defend him. I dare you. But do it with facts, not "he's doing his best".

"Apparently, Mr Johnson has stayed today that there may never be a vaccine for this virus or it will be a long time in coming and therefore restrictions will be in force for the long haul.

We could be heading for a dictatorship style government if we are not careful, imagine no vaccine for over the next five years, then no general election could take place and he stays in power......

Better Boris than hindsight SIR K Starmer, a lawyer who has wonderful hindsight, why did he not raise questions about care home deaths in March, oh he did not have hindsight. Lawyers love confrontation and don't solve problems, with thei wonderful legal training they can argue for a guilty person to be innocent

Are you for real? The government sends a shitload of infected elderly back to care homes to wipe out their friends and you think it's the fault of somebody else because he didn't think to stop them?

I'm going to rob my post office tomorrow but you're getting arrested, not me because you should have seen it coming.

Actually people were getting sent to the mrs carehome from the nhs who had never stayed there before.

3 from the nhs wiped out another 18 in the home so 21 In total. And _etasub would blame Starmer for that, not Johnson or the minister responsible Hancock.

As previously hindsight is wonderful.

Lawyer Starmer does not cum up with solutions. He was screaming for the exit strategy so once it was revealed he could say oh that is wrong and know he was not responsible"

Are you saying that no poor decision can be criticised because any such criticism is hindsight?

No safe labours seats after the last election. In case you don't understand the conservatives won the last election, Boris was the leader and is now pm. No, you're on the racist right (don't get shitty everyone else, I'm just responding to this one's name calling)

You clearly can't say why you vote the way you do. If you prefer to support a man who has been sacked several times for lying, has an unknown number of children with an unknown number of women, has form for racist, misogynistic, homophobic language, has overseen 50k+ deaths, lied to parliament today. If you support him that's your choice, but it's my choice to judge you accordingly.

There's plenty of evidence to support my views. I'm asking you to back up your own views but it appears that you can't.

There is also a theory that the plethora of vaccines they gave the troops caused Spanish Flu. WW1 ended much quicker than anticipated so they had loads leftover and decided to "immunise" the general population. Also, people suffered huge emotional and physical stress due to the war, this showed itself as disease in the following years.

The above wasn't proved. What was proved at the time by experiments was that by putting sick people with healthy ones, they couldn't make the healthy ones sick. I.e. they never understood how Spanish Flu infected people as they couldn't induce the infection.

"Do you have examples of those contrasting cities? Will see if I can find any theories"

https://www.capitalfm.com/news/tv-film/netflix/coronavirus-explained-tv-show-documentary/

"The extent of lockdown’s effectiveness was proven during the 1918 flu.

St Louis in the US shut its schools and public places quickly to cope with the outbreak while Philadelphia did not and allowed a parade involving thousands to go ahead.

St Louis managed to “flatten their curve” and saw a lower number of deaths over a longer period while Philadelphia saw a spike of deaths in hundreds of thousands of people.

When St Louis lifted their restrictions, the death rate jumped again and lockdown was immediately implemented again."

Watch Coronavirus Explained on Netflix. They show the curves.

https://api.nationalgeographic.com/distribution/public/amp/history/2020/03/how-cities-flattened-curve-1918-spanish-flu-pandemic-coronavirus

What is also damning about these curves is that the handling of pandemics is not "unprecedented" and politicians did not need a crystal ball to know what course of action to take. They just needed to spend 5 minutes on Google.

First thing - very large military population in Philly. 2nd they blamed a large parade for spreading it but hospitals were full 3 days after parade. Incredibly fast infection rate???

Also, seems like St Louis got hit harder by 3rd wave.

Don't know the social, environmental and economic differences between the cities especially at that time. Any Covid examples of city to city differences?

Interestingly, it appears San Francisco proved face masks we're a waste of time by relying on them and paying the price.

And yet plenty have warned it was coming. The govt ran a simulation in 2016 which highlights exactly the issues we've had. There can be no excuse for the lack of stockpiled PPE, they had fair warning.

What I find interesting is that St Louis flattened the curve. Relaxed quarantine only to have a spike. They reintroduced the quarantine which once again flattened the curve.

So unless those people went out and got the soldier vaccine during the relaxation of quarantine period it indicates that it was contagious. Also 50 to 100 million people died from this pandemic meaning that just about everyone got it. I imagine that this might be a good reason why they could not replicate transmission. Any one who could have got it already had it. But don't know enough about it.

I do know that soldiers on both sides suffered from the pandemic so unless they had a common vaccine provider it doesn't really make much sense. Sounds more like an anti vac excuse to me.

Actually there was a documentary on Netflix called "Pandemic" that claimed that a pandemic like this was not a case of "if" but "when". So this is not a case of hindsight.

This is a case of experts in their fields of epidemiologists being ignored because budget cuts were more important. Politicians took a gamble with the world's health and it cost us. There are no excuses.

President Trump shut down a pandemic early warning system in September last year because it cost $200 million dollars a year to maintain. I consider that the worst and most expensive poor decision in human history thus far.
