Just wondering how many people when they eventually go back to work are going to wear some sort of face covering.

I'm possibly going back this week, mixing with the public in a workplace that hasn't got hot running water (the boiler broke months ago and they didn't want to spend £6k getting it replaced).

I'll be wearing one but I don't think many where I work will. Will you? And will they be bought ones or homemade ones?

Here we will be wearing masks and we hope most people will wear them as it’s not to stop us catching it butt to help others to stop spreading it and if in public places everyone wears one then that diminishes the risk of Covid-19 spreading.

Here now shops can refuse you entry if you are not wearing a mask homemade or otherwise and thankfully people with no masks wear a scarf over their mouths .

WHO and many others have already proven that wearing a mask slows down saliva droplets and the cloud of smaller droplets if a cough is made behind one.

It doesn't need to be filtered to a viral level to be beneficial. The virus is largely transmitted within droplets, which masks can stop.

Here's a good mask test. If you vape or know someone who does, get them to exhale the vapour through the mask. If you see vapour, you know the mask is pointless. As each "drop" of vapour could harbour millions of viruses.

Also it should also do a risk assessment in repect of covid-19.

If a mask will protect other people from the wearers coughs and sneezes, will it not offer even a little protection for the wearer too?

If someone was to cough or sneeze in front of me (or even directly in my face) I think any protection, however slight, would be better than nothing.

Not the same thing. Coughing or sneezing will contain much more mucus/saliva than vapour from a vape pen does.

I'm wearing washable non medical grade masks now. Saving medical grade for those on the front line.

My understanding from the reading I've done is that it largely protects other people from you when worn correctly, but also may provide imperfect protection from others. In conjunction with maintaining hand hygiene and physical distancing.

I look like a hypochondriac in suburban Manchester, but I'm trying to do my bit.

Its a grey area. I've read that it does, I've read that it doesn't. But I'd rather wear one in case it protects other people from me, in case I've got it but not showing symptoms.

The situations are not comparable - the homemade masks would provide zero protection in a clinical setting but do provide some protection in a civilian social distancing setting. In hospitals staff are working up close with very ill people for long hours and sometimes even get covered in patients' bodily fluids. In public you'll be 2m away from people who have no symptoms. To follow on your vaping experiment, how far can you blow smoke in free air and how far can you blow it through even an open weave fabric? Will it still reach 2m, how much of it will? In this case a barrier doesn't have to be impenetrable to be effective.

It is all about viral load and level of exposure - you don't need a dry suit to do the dishes in.

On all accounts, if you have coronavirus it can prevent you from spreading it. Wearing one to prevent you from catching it is not proven to work. The mask ideally needs to be hermetically sealed, airtight, like with a proper respirator...

It would seem sensible that they have to make practical changes to working practices before they can open again. Things like personal space, staggered hours, washing hands facilities, sanitizers, the availability of suitable PPE, tool talk so everyone is responsible for theirs and everyone elses safety.

Presumably you have a H&S representative.

Shop workers, posties, delivery workers, and many more key workers have been keeping the country running throughout the last 2 months, with little or no ppe. Any ppe and hand sanitiser has been supplied by themselves in the most part because employers haven’t bothered. In many instances there has been very little in the way of social distancing for these workers too.

How many of these workers have you seen wearing face coverings?

to be fair less and less each week. My local postie is one person I made 3 masks for. She was so happy for them as she had said she was struggling to get any more of the paper ones. This morning she left me my post... and a box of cakes to say thanks for the masks

I'll be wearing one but I don't think many where I work will. Will you? And will they be bought ones or homemade ones?

If you are returning to work I would think your company has a duty of care to provide all of it's employees the facilities to wash their hands on a regular basis.

Also it should also do a risk assessment in repect of covid-19.

Yes, definitely, I'm really concerned about our hot water situation

The HSE website states that all employers must provide hot and cold running water. I think that's pretty clear what's required of your employer

Yes, I know that, they probably do to!!!! "

The HSE also has a phone number which you can report things on as well.

I would emagine the HSE is going to be on the ball for covid-19 as well.

Near Carmarthen

Just a badge of subservience and compliance.

The WHO do not recommend them for normal use and indeed on one of their advice pages (which I can't be bothered to find) they point to the increased risks.

Even the government's own website - Public Health England (updated today) says

"....there’s very little evidence of widespread benefit from their use outside of these clinical settings. Facemasks must be worn correctly, changed frequently, removed properly and disposed of safely in order to be effective."

Personally I have no wish to put a non sterile, potentially contaminated bit of cloth next to my nice warm wet facial orifices.

How many of these workers have you seen wearing face coverings? to be fair less and less each week. My local postie is one person I made 3 masks for. She was so happy for them as she had said she was struggling to get any more of the paper ones. This morning she left me my post... and a box of cakes to say thanks for the masks "

I have to wear a mask at work. I use the 3 ply surgical mask at all times in work then a visor and ppe for certain tasks.

I leave work. I then use a 3ply fabric mask that has a pocket to put a filter in, but only use this when I'm in a shop and can't guarantee 2m distance. I have 3 of these masks, wash, wear and spare.

I hand wash and use gel.

I will point out though that what a lot of people are forgetting is, remove the mask by the ear strap. Wash it ASAP or put in a bag till you can. And wash your hands after taking off the mask. I've watched people get in their cars, take off the mask touching the whole thing, then touching their face and steering wheel etc. That's when face coverings aren't effective.

And I'm taking notice of WHO and current guidelines within the care sector.

My employer got one box of face masks in March and promptly locked them away. Then when the big moral panic about lack of PPE in the NHS flared up they got more and said wearing them at work was compulsory. And whilst they're not locked away it's only one per shift.

That’s definitely the right way to go about it - PP3 is only necessary in medical situations so to be honest a silk scarf will probably be more use than the paper nuisance masks, and they are a good investment for when we can all get back to tying each other to the bed

Other than saving lives, you mean?

A cloth mask might only filter out a small percentage of any incoming lungful of virus air, but there are suggestions initial viral dose can be the difference between a few low days and being dead.

A cloth mask is far more about preventing spread - It massively reduces the amount of virus an infected person launches into other's airspace. And given you can be infected without symptoms, surely it makes sense we all wear the damned things.

Oh, and

"Shop workers, posties, delivery workers, and many more key workers have been keeping the country running throughout the last 2 months, with little or no ppe. Any ppe and hand sanitiser has been supplied by themselves in the most part because employers haven’t bothered. In many instances there has been very little in the way of social distancing for these workers too.

How many of these workers have you seen wearing face coverings?

It's increasing. I've bought my own masks.

I think employers and the government should step up, but at the same time, I'm doing what I can do as an individual to contribute. I find that interesting as 4 weeks ago I saw loads of staff wearing masks or screens.. this week it's been less.. a lot less.

Same with people actually wearing face coverings or gloves. A few weeks ago people were wearing them alot. This weekend especially.. in 2 shops I saw a handful at most.

It is interesting. I suppose different trends in different areas.

I'm keeping up to date with virology and public health people talking about this, and I'm personally satisfied that wearing a mask is the right thing for me to do at the moment. maybe its the fact that we have had a handful of deaths and none in the actual area. In fact 4 of our local small areas havent even had any. And the 5 deaths in the next town up are in a care home. "

We’ve not fared so well here. The ONS tracker shows that in my local council ward, which is an area of about 1 square mile, there have been 7 deaths to covid. This is the same as the rest of the entire town added together! I suspect that with the relaxing of the lockdown it will mean a free for all for the numpties who have not been following the rules properly anyway.......I wonder if we can maybe set up a vigilante team to go into their houses as they sleep and staple gun masks to their faces

I suspect that with the relaxing of the lockdown it will mean a free for all for the numpties who have not been following the rules properly anyway.......I wonder if we can maybe set up a vigilante team to go into their houses as they sleep and staple gun masks to their faces "

Is there a care home in that square mile ?

"Here's a good mask test. If you vape or know someone who does, get them to exhale the vapour through the mask. If you see vapour, you know the mask is pointless. As each "drop" of vapour could harbour millions of viruses. "

You do know that the exhalation from a vape is heated therefore rises. Coronavirus is spread in droplets which funnily enough drop! This is why farts linger and bad breath doesn’t!

"Just wondering how many people when they eventually go back to work are going to wear some sort of face covering.

Your workplace may have thought it was okay to skimp on things like replacing the boiler before, but they cannot now.

No one should return if don't provide reasonable precautions, like the ability to properly wash hands.

They have a legal duty of care to their employees. Any dereliction of this would leave them open to a suit or a criminal offence.

Only return when they have taken all the reasonable steps to protect you.

Central

I'd like to hope that it could stop someone infected from passing it on, potentially causing a death down the line.
