To be implemented on people entering country at the end of the month.

To little to late

Too late possibly (probably). But might help suppress the R rate and slow / delay a second spike?? Who knows, not me I’m no Scientist.

Serendipity

It made no sense why this isn’t happening. A family member flew from NZ to Australia just before lockdown and had to self isolate there for 14 days. They then flew into Heathrow , no one gave them any advice on self isolating etc at this end. They did do that, but of their own initiative rather than any official advice.

Great idea but it's like closing the door after the horse has bolted.

I am a key worker, Live-in-Carer for people with Dementia and Altzhiemers in the uk but we live in spain.

We are only now starting the first phase of being allowed out to walk around. If it area has any Infections or deaths u do not enter that first phase.

If I was to return to work when flights allow, I would need to self isolate for 2 Weeks, then work with the very vunrable for 2 weeks and then fly home for my 2 weeks off.

Not viable for me, and symptoms may not even show. I could be Asymptomatic and be a carrier. With no testing what the he'll do they expect to achieve.

They are completely arse backwards and way behind the times.

Stay safe peeps x x

"To be implemented on people entering country at the end of the month.

If they bring it in, which we will find out tomorrow, there will be so many exceptions that it will be a waste of time

A person arrives from Spain, Belgium, France or Switzerland to repair equipment in a hospital (yes it happens a lot) wont be expected to quarantine and there will be endless other exemptions, flight staff, ferry staff, lorry drivers need I go on .

.

The irony of this is in some places abroad ( Fuerteventura for one) there have been no new cases for at least two weeks and only 1 active case hospitalized, so flying back to the UK healthy, you have to self isolate for 2 weeks in a place of much greater danger!

The idea is that you have gone through 2 airports and sat on a plane for 4 hours. Are you confident all those people are virus free, hence 14 days quarantine when you get here as the virus will show in those 14days

This is a stupid idea. If it had been done at the start of lockdown then ok

. But now.. why...

Most other places have much more risk to fear a brit flying there.

Will you magically teleport from the plane after you landed to your house?

Or will you have to go through the airport passing others who've come from other destinations... oh yeah don't worry why would you catch something eh?

Even with isolation and people nipping to shop to purchase necessities managing to catch the virus with distancing and limiting how many enter a shop at any time but yeah a mass of people from all over the world you'll be fine why quarantine right?

This 14 day quarantine should have been done in the very beginning and I said so. I got told what do you expect the government to do. Well follow pandemic infection protocol of course.

Just because you aren't sick then doesn't mean you don't pick something up along the way. For starters sitting in a confined space with 100+ other people. Then exiting the plane to contend passing 1000+ other people heck if they have full flights incoming potentional to have to get by 10s of thousands at the busiest UK airports.

Heathrow at peak time air traffic controllers land a plane every 45 seconds! 1300 planes in a day.

Heathrow busiest terminal, terminal 5 has 32 million passengers go through it per year. That's 211k flights a year just for terminal 5!

So yes you were implying how ridiculous it all is forcing isolation after a flight?

Ultimately it's the government, as they take the expert submissions from experts and take their own decisions, guided by their political bent. The government has insisted on secrecy, preventing the public that they serve from being informed of the scientific details and opinion.

If the Government are making all of their decisions by “following the science” then in their eyes, they cannot be responsible for the failures. Wake up scientists, you’re being set up big time!!

From what I understand through reading and listening to government experts.

As the virus was already in the UK (and let's be honest we don't know when it first entered the UK) the number of infected was already on the up. No point in telling international arrivals to isolate for 14 day as the virus is already here. However the UK is in lockdown so new arrivals should be staying home anyway.

The reason for doing it now is the infection rate is on a down curve so trying to stop new cases coming from abroad and setting off new out breaks like what has been seen in China and S Korea when people have arrived home from being abroad.

What you have said above is exactly how the government has got us into the situation of highest death rate in Europe

we still had 15000+ passengers flying in each day and if two or 3 contagious on flight, good change the majority of people on flight would catch, then free to roam everywhere in UK

adding to the already infected UK and death toll continuing to increase

airport arrivals should have went into 14 day isolation at least 3 months ago

I don’t understand why it wasn’t done much much earlier, countries like UAE, Rwanda, NZ, Nigeria all put this in place in March to prevent it arriving en masse. We let in Hundreds of thousands of Chinese,, Spanish and Italians that had COVID-19 in the last 2 months, unchecked straight onto London transport systems.

Death rate is not the highest.

The rate is measured to how many deaths to ratio of population.

In Europe the UK is currently 6th I believe.

However we have the highest numbers of deaths. But as been explained numerous times, different countries are counting in different ways. Plus it is far to early to compare countries against each other.

At the end of the day, people will decide if they quarantine or not. Yes you can pick it up in any public place, but having been through 2airports and sat on a plane in close contact, with many others, I would think the risk is higher.

Actually every sane country in the world has had similar quarantine measures in place from the outset. Israel did it right in beginning.

Canada requires arrivals to state where they will be staying for their quarantine and have proof thereof. Those without prearranged quarantine arrangements are taken to detention centres. Breaking quarantine can land you a fine of up to $433 000.

Yes it's inconvenient and less than ideal. But so is dying.

Yes it's inconvenient and less than ideal. But so is dying."

And all i am saying is treating people entering your country like prisoners for 2 weeks is a sure fire way to stop them coming at all , so all the people bleating on about the economy surely realise that the long term sustainability of something like that doesn't work either

"Maybe bus them to the Nightingale hospitals we aren't using ?"

All these cruise ships that aren't being used would make ideal floating isolation areas with limited opportunity for occupants to come and go.

In this way another problem would be solved. The travel companies could make some money instead of getting bailouts.

The people coming to Britain aren't all tourists. The majority are British citizens returning home after struggling to get flights out of locked down countries.

I wouldn't think tourists should be coming in at all at the moment, why would anyone want to get on a plane, unless absolutely necessary? So if they live here, they just need to isolate for 2weeks, unless they're key workers.

"At the end of the day, people will decide if they quarantine or not. Yes you can pick it up in any public place, but having been through 2airports and sat on a plane in close contact, with many others, I would think the risk is higher.

Absolutely but imagine how many people would be in hotels after 13 days of it starting. Astronomical and ridiculous suggestion.

Yep get your point, so what is the answer?"

There isn't a workable method

People coming to visit or work in the UK must obey be the same restrictions as everyone else, everyone poses the same risk ALWAYS

France have said their quarantine won't apply to British or EU citizens

Boris may bring I'm something because of Media hype but there will be so many exceptions that the only thing it will achieve is stop Brits travelling abroad

I think all he can do is what people want and try to limit the damage.

I feel sorry for him having to legislate for the lowest level of intelligence knowing full well that the majority of people are capable of understanding risk and risk assessment

I think we've been turned into a country of morons by the press

It's a world wide pandemic, there are no winners or losers just unfortunate dead people. Every country is at a different stage with a different long term strategy

It's not over by a long shot and unfortunately you can't blame it all on the goverment but it's a good way to waiver ones own guilt.

'Johnson says it will "soon be the time... to impose quarantine on people coming into this country by air"'

Two friends of ours fly back to UK tomorrow from Fuerteventura (via Madrid for 24 hours), they will step out at Heathrow and go home un-quarantined. Three airports, including one of the worst affected cities in Europe.

Que? As Manuel would have said!

The difference was they were flying into the covid hot spot before. It would have made more sense for those coming in to isolate from us, rather us isolate from them!

Now it's hopefully the other way round and the quarantine will hopefully be useful.

I had it in December. Pretty sure of that. But I don't get why shutting the doors in 3 weeks makes sense now.

It is just going to kill off tourism and where will they put people ?

Won’t apply to people coming in from ROI or from France.... and not one person so far can give a rational reason why

ROI boarders with NI, and people work and live cross borders. France is connected by the channel tunnel. So you can't check all the transport in and out and imagine slowing down movement of vital goods like food and medicine.

People should be checked and told to stay out of public for 14 days. With this being enforced and fined.

"Remember super-spreader Steve, one of the very first to fly in, and pass to so many. Airports should have been locked down then.

Now the government is trying to pass blame to the experts who advised the government.

Both Experts and Government are responsible for so many death's "

Sorry, just plain wrong.

We made the same mistake at the start of the AIDS pandemic around the search for patient zero - although even that was a fucking typo - google the story of Gaetan Dugas. With a pandemic with a long latency period, you will almost certainly have it in your country before you know it, irrespective of how individual cases are handled. Cases like 'super spreader steve' are all too easily turned into an attempt by stupid people to ascribe supernatural agency to individuals rather than accepting that each individual's R rate will differ, with outliers at both ends of the spectrum.

It will be very difficult to manage a 14 day quarantine, for example may my nephew works for an airline, he won't be quarantined and he will still be mixing with his family who he lives with.

He is also likely to be doing multiple flights a day.

Perhaps we should ban passenger flights to reduce risk as flying is usually a "want" not a "need" ?
