Shag, even without this virus for some those challenges are part of their every day lives..

This is another on top of those..

Positive thinking is good..

But if your living in poverty, trying to balance more than one job and raise a family it will only get you so far..

Absolutely this. Words can help but this virus should give us a chance to re-evaluate a lot of things. Lots of people, that prior to this, had had no experience of the benefits system will be a tad wiser. Hopefully we can get away from this idea it's for scroungers, it isn't. It's a safety net for us all in case we hit the skids!

Thanks Shag

Perhaps it's a good prompt for us all to keep our disagreements with others points of view as civil as they can be. This thread as a minimum. It's healthy to debate and we can learn a lot from it - I value the range of opinions here.

Maybe keep the reposting of subsequent disappointment as a goal to just 1 reply each, where it's obvious that each of us is at an opposite end of a spectrum on a topic.

It's a great benefit for us all at present to keep things lightly positive, without invalidation of others. We'll be right and wrong sometimes and can get to learn and discover in our own ways and times.

We're fortunate enough to be ok, as we are older and have work pensions and we're not spending so much anyway, but with that age, comes an elderly father and a disabled, older brother, who I am looking after and trying to keep positive, whilst they are shut in their homes. I am aware of the other end of the spectrum, from the younger members of our family, who we are helping where we can.Everyone of us is affected in some way.

Because it's designed to be an absolute minimum to live on just.. surely if in mid march you had earned to much. That would be for the tax year..or was it over the last few months..when can you reapply?

Side note. We are no further forward then we were in the middle ages..with being servants to lords of the land..more tech etc. Slightly more human rights etc. But we are slaves to money..and by default those that control it..

The above..

When in what is meant to be the 5th/6th richest? Country on the planet a report by the UN is basically binned and becomes a tribal issue where it was debated then we are in a mess..

As for global issues, most don't give a toss even if they are aware..

I think the younger generation will make a huge difference in terms of the environment.

They have already caused a sea change in thinking and hopefully it won't be too late.

We are to selfish as a species..plain and simple..

What we know is.. communism didn't work.. capitalism isn't working.. socialism gets diverted to become nationalism..and that definitely didn't work..tribalism might work again..but we need to give up lots of stuff..and lose what 95%of the world's population..don't think that's gonna happen..

The film interstellar hit the spot with Michael Caines character.. realising we wouldn't work together to save humanity..only ourselves...

Of course, human beings are inherently selfish. Thats a given.

We are animals. We are hard wired to protect our own. Do what we have to do to survive.

When this virus reared its ugly head, everyone was saying " we must pull together" and " we are all in this together"

There are reports of countries holding back food stocks for their own people ( understandably) refusing to export.

Sadly I think the working together thing aint gonna happen

I think that's flaw in socialism.people are inherently selfish.

I think capitalism, certain aspects of it certainly, encourage that individualism. We have seen that here.
