Just as a 'throw it out question ',does anyone think that this will be a 'wakeup call' for countries to be prepared for any future virus outbreaks?

Central

It will probably lead to some greater levels of preparedness in some countries. I'm uncertain whether the UK will be amongst them, as the conservative governments from 2010 were repeatedly given the information on how unprepared we were but did nothing about it. We should evaluate people on their behaviour, not what they may so. Unless being more prepared involves several government senior ministers getting very wealthy from it, expect more of the same.

1 part is having the resources, including health and care workers and adequately funded services and the 2nd is the process part, with fully prepared plans but also a government that will take intelligent, appropriate decisions quickly. I'm not so optimistic about much of that here in the UK

no, nothing wrong with the other 3 countrys,

was just saying that it now makes sence to bring allot of things back in house , bring the british kite mark back and start to look after the UK again rather than import everything and rely on outhers.

Not if the Nightingale hospitals are an indicator....

For those of us working in ICUs, we knew that taking up to 500 pts, let alone the 2000 first mooted, that it was NEVER going to happen. Not because of the ability to build extra capacity but because they were NEVER going to find the staff to manage those pts.

As it turns out, the hospital had 19 pts as of last week.... and if any hospital had to refer a pt into the hospital, we were emailed that we had to send a team of staff with the pt to care for them.. why would you do that?.. you’d just create extra capacity in your own hospital and reorg your own staff.

The PPE issue has, I think, been slightly exaggerated... I’m not saying that there haven’t been some shortages or supply issues, but personally we’ve always had enough PPE.

Now that this issue has been raised though, it would be really shortsighted for the NHS not to have its own manufacturing arm for PPE and dialysis kit

Haha as if we will go back to made in England, everyone wants cheap and that isn't going to happen if it's made in England.

This is why south Korea were so prepared for covid-19, they put in an emergency action plan after SARS. We always put in plans after the event reading the chief medical officer disasters that have been dealt with is interesting material.

It’s inevitable that lessons will be learnt. We need to stop believe we are invincible and start planning for worst case - when I see ‘we’ I actually mean ‘them’, the government, hospitals, care homes, businesses. Contingency plans.

I thought the same, sadly some people think there is only one country in the UK.

I agree because sadly I don't think this will be the last time a pandemic hits us. So let's hope we will be better prepared for the next one.

With the increase of globalisation the chances of pandemics has risen dramatically. Whether the world will learn from this is hard to say, will governments spend millions on a what if scenario for the next pandemic maybe initially but then budget cuts will see money and resources diverted to what they see as higher priority at the time..also what form will the next pandemic take ? A virus ? A bacteria ? Or another form ?? We dont know and in reality cant prepare for every possible future scenario..

Interesting that one of labours ideas was for the nhs to manufacture a lot of its requirements (generic drugs to begin with) and I wonder if some of the more rampant brexiteers are perhaps in step with that now? The trouble is that so many of our care home and nhs staff came from europe and when they started going home there was no one trained available to take up the places that needed filling so badly. Just like fruit pickers etc. Make Britain Great (sorry, England) - what bollocks!

Given that the only region of England that was a net exporter of manufactured goods befoer ethe Brexit clusterfuck was the north east, you appear to be lamentably ignorant of the reality of the British economy. The problem of the English economy is that the north has the factories, the south has the bankers and the investment in quality of life.

Have a nice day.

No, people have short memories, the government's allies in the press will start up with stories about those front line staff that we all rightly applaud not being so great after all. Idiots will believe it because it will be drip fed into their newspapers and facebook timelines and we'll be back to the way we were.

The hard of thinking will still believe that the Conservatives care about them and that the only way for normal people to have more money is to give a shitload of it to the rich, and because they are so kind and generous they will look after us.

People will blame 'cheap' labour from Europe for them not having a job, rather than the business owner who laid them off so they could make more money, and the world will go back to spinning the way the rich people want it too.

The reason we have this shit show, and it's cousin Brexit, and it's older sibling the 2008 financial crash, is because thinking is hard, and admitting that you were fooled is even harder, so people will carry on pretending that they have never been fooled and keep swallowing the narratives that help them do that.

Dominic Cummings is even on YouTube telling people that Conservatives don't care!! The evidence is there..

It isn't if you choose not to see it, plus he means they don't care about those other people, not me.

"It’s inevitable that lessons will be learnt."

It really, really isn't inevitable. Not in the UK, the USA and China, to name but three.

If history teaches us anything it's that humanity is capable of repeating a mistake - no matter how catastrophic it is.

Maybe the way forward would be if international scientists had a base in a neutral country e.g Switzerland, in order to pool their skills, instead of working separately in their own country.

Up here in my board we have never had more than 6 cases in ICU at a time. No more than 50 other cases.

Assessment centres with very low attendance rates.

But all staff on standby, maybe working 1day in 5!

Singapore and a few other countries learned lessons from SARS and were really well prepared for this pandemic. The EU will put measures in. God knows what Trump will do.

As soon as this is over the UK will resume the race to the bottom as per Brexit. There will be no money left for anything as left-wing as looking after the health and wellbeing of the citizens.
