The point is even though Edinburgh scientists have announced this test break through as it stands none will see the light of day in the UK as other countries are buying them all up.

Part of the reason is this test needs lab based results and the uk wants the on the spot result kits but it's those which have been way to unreliable.

Roche antibody approved by FDA. Expect the same here in the next 2 week. Game changer. France found Covid in pneumonia patients from swabs taken in December. Proves how long this has been around and suppressed by Chinese government. Know myself people who have had this virus (full symptoms) on return from December holidays. Trump maybe a loose cannon (is), but something he was saying are proving true. Merkel and EU criticised him for closing US airports, but then they do the same. All been Chinese white wash. If outbound flights from Wuhan had been stopped less people would be dead now ??

So please let's take the national pride and Brexit put of this and deal with the implications????

So logically a test is given

Person A tests positive for antibodies

Let's assume for a moment re infection is either not possible or statistically very unlikely

So person A

Allowed to roam the world

Now if the statistics are to be belived most likely less than 2 million Britons have had this

Thus person B

They test negative and must adhere to lockdown rules so in order that "they wont catch it "

Thus person B is forced to be second class citizens

The fab lynch mob threatening bodily harm if they leave the home because they WILL catch it WILL spread it and WILL KILL others

Person B has two choices

Lose their liberties until the vaccine is not developed

Or go onto the black market and aim for infection

The whole thing is a moral nightmare

I think however I maybe suggesting that IF the antibodies test is reliable AND reinfection is statistically low to non THEN

A controlled program of deliberate infection could be required

Whilst ensuring the absolute most potentially vulnerable are exceptionally well shielded from any exposure

WHY OH WHY OH FUCKING WHY is there petty nonsense regarding which country is best and Brexit is beyond me

Ok so currently we have a slightly controlled RANDOM program of infection

An anti body positive test will give a human their freedom

What do you think some will do ????

I'll say again

A controlled (not random) program of infections MAY be required

Else you most likely will get a program of uncontrolled self infections ???

Actually no not in addition

And hopefully less deaths

So why would we infect 65 plus ?

Second

If you ask for volunteers

Who once infected have a full lockdown no secondary infections occur

They statistically have good chance of recovery

As apossed to the same volunteers

Going into the wide word actively looking to be infected

I also pointed out that the vulnerable section of society need to isolate more thus reducing deaths

Obviously by the stats the vulnerable 65 plus are not sticking to the rules are they

It takes two the spreader and the catcher

Not all of the deaths are innocent in their own infections

I'll reiterate

The above is a scenario based upon a two tier freedom based upon a test result

IF , IF

a positive result gives additional liberties then some will actively try to self infect THIS WILL cause needless death

Lockdown will exist until

A . enough have had it

B a vaccination

I'd suggest if a vaccination is not forthcoming then controlled infection of medically tested for health individuals is superior not ideal or wanted than random infections

Theoretically with social restrictions that's a possible rate of 1 million a month

30 to 40 million to go

12 months in a year

Its suggested any more than that rate and the NHS will be overwhelmed and more deaths

A vaccination may or may not occur?????

even if you are not infectious yourself, is it not possible to carry the infection, for example go to the supermarket and touch something that is carrying the germs, (maybe from somebody who is out doing there are essential shopping and has not yet tested positive or for antibodies), could you then not carry that to somebody else?

Even if so, in the end if it works out that the virus has to spread slowly through us for us to get the care we need at the time we need, (and that care be available) and also so for us all to have developed immunity in time, maybe that is a slow way for it to actually progress in a controlled style manner?

You can infecect other people if you have the virus, even if you don't show symptoms. That is why you should really wear gloves in supermarkets and masks in crowded places. The antigen and antibody test are designed to tell you if you have ever had it without showing symptoms.

Sweden is a very successful model for a country using controlled infection to protect its citizens.

I despair at how miserable and filled with hatred some of you are.

Hatred?

It was just one silly woman who tried to make some kind of Brexit point over and got her facts horribly wrong.

Shd just got corrected by a few on here .

No hatred.

The antibody tests are really good news.

Regardless where they were researched.

Yes there is hatred, political point scoring and negativity, the forum is filled with it these days. It's very sad. "

It's ironic that the only one trying to point score was her and she got it horribly wrong lol.

"Vaccine Vaccine Vaccine is all you hear about, the NHS have been giving out the flu vaccine for year's but not cured the flu yet. So a vaccine is a none starter and they know it, just trying to keep your sprites up while the virus passes through the population. "

They can’t cure the flu... each seasonal flu virus is different from the year before.

The vaccines come fro the previous years flu strain with a guesstimate on how much the virus has mutated.

Everyone would need to get the vaccine for it to be a cure..... unfortunately no Dr or scientist can see the future viruses and create a vaccine for it x

What?

I know for sure that antibodies tests were developed, approved for use and have been used in the rest of the world since April. Some companies involved are Abbott (USA), DiaSorin (Italy), Roche (Switzerland).

But there are many others.

This tests are not used exclusively in the countries where they have been developed. Why UK is not using them is a mystery. But I guess that it's easier to say that other countries are evil and don't want to help us.

Like many I fear a vaccine or cure is a long way off but let's hope we are wrong on that

So you think anyone that voted brexit should not get a vaccine/ cure if its not developed in the UK.

Does that mean if a vaccine/ cure is developed in the UK then anyone that voted remain does not get it?

It's very dangerous to use tests that are not accurate and/ or the supplier won't declare the accuracy

I already wrote the "accuracy" and it's pretty good. These tests, including the Edinburgh one, are all roughly equivalent relatively to sensivity and specificity (or accuracy) once you look at the confidence intervals (I didn't find these value for all of them but it's very unlikely that any of this companies did enough tests to have a small interval). These are not "finger prick" tests.

It is not like the 99.8% claimed by Edinburgh researchers was assessed by anyone else.

Anyway all these tests aren't the magic fingerprick tests that can't possibly work. These are lab tests developed by the same companies that make the PCR tests that everyone already uses and a lot of other stuff.

The fact that I don't know the results of any independent test doesn't prove much except the fact that I don't know everything.

But I wouldn't imagine Germany or Italy using unreliable tests.

Anyway the figures that they usually give are from tests done by the company/researchers themselves. Nothing wrong about this. They may or may not require other tests before approval, no idea.

IF the virus is as contagious as claimed then millions have been infected, there is a slaughterhouse in Tipperary that was tested due to a few claiming they had symptoms, on the day of the test 30% were confirmed with it, there was no estimate of how many had recovered or were not yet having enough infection to test positive, in big cities with mass transport and lots of pubs clubs etc I would be surprised to see 50% have had it. This test is a game changer

They can only say how long immunity is from the first person who recovered from it if you catch my drift.

As its brand new they cant say let's say for arguments sake that you have have 2 years immunity until 2 years after the first person recovered.

"Antibody tests were already developed and are already being widely used across Europe. UK at its best as usual.

Really? So if you are correct, shouldn't we be asking ourselves why our EU friends are not offering it to us.

You seem to be sat on your arse blaming our own government rather than others?

Or maybe they still have the wrong email address?

All I can find on this is that Roche have had their antibody test approved by the FDA in America. That doesn't mean we won't get it.

You can find news about Germany and Italy conducting antibodies tests since 20th of April. There are probably other countries doing similar things that don't show up in English news.

Our government have said there are many tests out there but they are not reliable enough. A bad test is worse than no test at all. Their words. "

Well, this is not true. There are many bad tests around. But in the last month we got many new and working tests.

We don't know how long in duration or how full and effective any immunity may be. We're banking on some immunity being acquired. It just may only be of a very short duration. Worse still, only a tiny fraction of the population may have it.

"You can infecect other people if you have the virus, even if you don't show symptoms. That is why you should really wear gloves in supermarkets and masks in crowded places. The antigen and antibody test are designed to tell you if you have ever had it without showing symptoms.

Sweden is a very successful model for a country using controlled infection to protect its citizens."

No please!!!! Don't wear gloves. All you do is spread it everywhere! Everything you touch it spreads to. Your hands have pores etc. Just wash your hands. For the gloves to work, you need to change them every time you touch one thing or walk past one person.

"We still don't know if or how long you're immune for after you've had it so the antibody tests won't actually achieve much until more is known about the immunity to the virus

No one has been proved as having COVID-19 twice!

This test is a game changer!

They have found cases. But then with any virus there are always some that get it more than once. "

Those cases have been proven to be false positives. The test is detecting the dead coronavirus lingering in the body.

As far as I know we always get immunity to a virus ONCE our immune system has beaten it(we dont beat aids so dont become immune) even with chicken pox we carry the virus and can develop shingles but not chicken pox again and we dont spread either to other people once our system has stopped it, you only pass covid on when you have it even if asymptomatic once your immune system has cleared it transmission stops.

Covid is likely to mutate as flu and colds do lots of reports that it has several times BUT normally the illness will be less .

"So please let's take the national pride and Brexit put of this and deal with the implications????

For fucks sake this needs joined up international thinking "

brexit got brught into it by someone whos obviously a remainer whio thinks brexit voters shouldnt get the test as its developed in switzerland.compleatly missibg the point the swiss aint in the e.u. and people say only leavers spout bollox lol

The infection rate in a hospital may be a bit skewed

A recent German sample showed a 15 % infection rate, a fatality rate of 0.37 %. It also showed 1 in 5 of those infected showed no noticeable disease symptoms

"I mentioned Brexit because the original post was "Britain at its best again", not recognising the international effort. "

To be fair this is exactly what stood out to me in the OP. It was worded less as a celebration of there being a test available and more as a 'isn't Britain great' post.

As has been pointed out, developing a test neither makes Britain great nor unique. You can guarantee that it isn't some genetic aptitude unique to British people that led to this work - yet it appears the OP is suggesting this is the case. Scientists all around the world share their findings and knowledge. Very little is done in science now that doesn't rely on a great deal of collaborative work around the globe. Science is in fact one of the least political areas of human endeavor (just take a look at the number of countries involved in the LHC for example), mostly because scientists are intelligent enough to not get fooled by the idiocy that is nationalism and jingoism.

The other thing that should be pointed out is the only source for the claims made about the test is the company selling the test. The article in the standard reads like a sales brochure.

Regardless of the silly talk of brexit and it consequences. This test is going to take ages to get any meaningful results. Blood is going to taken from the person with all the drain on resources on the NHS in regard to manpower, ppe, testing capacity and time. The cost for the testing equipment that will be purchased from Roche. This will not come cheap. As for time I am not sure how many people a skilled nurse can draw blood from in a day but will not be on the hundreds more likely between 100 and 200 a day.

The only people that are going to benefit from this test is Roche, not the world's population for sure. We need a pee on a stick type test and I am not sure that will ever come about.

"We have just got over 12% of the world's Covid19 deaths yet we don't have 1% of the population. "

As has been said multiple times covid death and infection rates are not just a factor of population.

Other factors include

Age demographics

Vulnerablity demographics

Population density

So a country that does not support its elderly, allows vulnerable citizens to die before their time and has a spread out population will do very well.

I voted to remain if it makes any difference but I see no reason to keep bringing everyone's issues back to a vote held 4 years ago.

Maybe it was abit of flag waving but why shouldn't people try to celebrate our achievements? I'm fairly sure other countries would do the same. Yes, it's a global achievement too and all countries deserve recognition but I understand what the OP was trying to do.

Honestly? I'd love to read something positive from the doomsayers, the ones that slag the government off all the time but never actually think that it's that government paying their wages right now, without which half of them would be unemployed.

Would not put hope on vaccination. The more sensible idea is the antibody injection, especially in older or at risk people. Rather than your body creating antibodies which is what happens with a vaccine, the antibodies are injected directly into you.Lot more expensive to produce though, and interestingly they give you TWO types just incase one is ineffective. Think the fact they give you two different strains indicates that maybe the virus can mutate, showing how hard it will be to produce an effective vaccine.
