I think it’s temporary - materialistic values continue even during lockdown - online sales will show that. Decluttering is just a distraction and probably time to do it most wouldn’t normally have.

In the short term, no. I think over the next few months as businesses work out new ways of pushing their wares, consumer spending will go up.

A harsh recession/depression may have a more fundamental impact.

Over the longer term, I think a combination of this and the impetus that was already there from a desire for sustainability may well drive down materialism.

No I don't think we're heading for a less materialistic world. We're heading for a period of time where it might not be possible for people to satisfy their materialism though. Lots of businesses will go under, the goods they previously supplied won't be available but more importantly the people they once employed won't be working so won't be able to buy stuff anyway.

I doubt I'll be less materialistic than I am now. I like books and clothes too much.

Materialistic tendencies will still exist, just not the means to act on them. Make no mistake, economic ruin and depression is coming to large segments of society. Worse still, are the unnecessary austerity measures that will hit us all because the same system of inequality will persist.

I have never seen so many Hermes drivers in my street. And the poor postman is more miserable than usual with the huge amount of parcels.

Consumerism has adapted. People will always want stuff they don’t really need.

I think atm it's fine but when things get really tight then the materialism will surface with a passion. Only so long ppl will substitute a rainbow on their profile pic for a new lingerie set, hair style and makeup innit.....

I hope we are.

That old world was getting awful cluttered with junk, meaninless posessions and greed.

Now, peopme are being kinder and more considerate of each other.

Hopefully that continues.
