It is easier to factually report on "number of patients that died of X communicable disease".

Someone could go into hospital for a knee operation, in for a week.... gets COVID, symptoms clear up.... patient released.... now should that patient be included in number of cases, got covid and recovered..... as this patient was admitted with that.

death certificates are easier.

The treatment..... don't get sick.... don't be overweight.... don't smoke .. don't have an immune system that doesn't want to throw nukes at your own body..... at the moment you personally can treat yourself better than any wonder drug....

Stay well

I'm thinking OP is wanting treatment specifically for the virus itself rather than the disease caused by the virus

My understanding is that they're working out treatments. As this is new, they're having to guess, with mixed results. But it is getting better, it sounds like. Things are being figured out.

But those in a bad way with this thing are in a very, very bad way.

Palliative care does not give proactive care. It just treats the symptoms. In ICU there's a chance that treatment results in recovery. In palliative care the prognosis is death.

There is not treatment as there is no cure. They just try to help to support the body as it fights the disease.

Most win some lose.

Sounds a bit brutal but as things stand at the moment that's all there is.

Is a little bit surprising that there's no mention of the recoveries. There surely must be some data.

According to worldometers.info we're one of 8 countries/overseas territories not to publish data on recoveries.

Yes I noted this a while back. Most countries give a % of recovery but the uk don't. Working with the figures I've found via various sites the uk recovery rate seems a hell of a lot lower than other countries. Maybe that's the reason it isn't in black and white for all to see.

Could also be that it might be difficult to determine the number of recovered especially since it's possible to be reinfected. At this current moment anyway don't think it's been denied yet.

I suppose that might be true in a sense given the protests elsewhere but they are few and far between from what I've read on the net. Excluding the US and that's because POTUS is encouraging them protest which seems highly illogical to me.

Additionally we saw that with a bit of good weather people were disregarding social distancing measures anyway. I don't think the number of recovered would influence the populace greatly if at all.

They were asked this at a briefing a couple of days back. The reply was that they dont know the recovery rate as they don't know how many have been infected due to low testing...or something along that line...

They stopped giving recovery numbers weeks ago. Probably because the numbers were too low.

Many people survive, but they are discharged from hospital

before they recover completely

and in many cases they still have the virus, so can't be officially counted as "recovered". Once they are out of hospital the govern simply don't keep track of them, they didn't even count deaths out of hospitals until few days ago.

The only figure I can find is 135 but that was from 22nd March.

They also mentioned difficulties capturing numbers due to the lag time, resources being focused elsewhere & inability to document non hospitalised patients.

Central

Figures would be available but you'd need to hunt them down. It's been a tough task getting the death rates sourced for all parts of the health service every day - and only this week have they added care home deaths.

Hospital admissions and treatments are only going to a minority of those infected, so the hospital deaths are from a minority of the population who caught the bug.

Until we've suspended large volumes of testing for long enough, we'll remain somewhat ignorant of how many people are more accurately getting infected.

Once we have widespread accurate testing that can indicate who has been inflected and has antibodies to the virus, and the scale of operation and resources to process, we'll be better able to calculate how much of the population has been exposed. The earlier test types had poorer accuracy levels than are needed. I think they may be planning a trial of 1000 people to be tested, to gauge the effectiveness, before much larger trials that would result in sufficient statistical power to estimate the prevalence in 66 million people.

"That's looking after the dying !!!!.

It's treating the knock on effects of the virus.

The virus does not kill you, the virus causes side effects that kill you and them side effects have treatments that the success depends on the serverity you have, underlying health conditions and exposure time before treatment.

My understanding is that the virus promotes, in some, an extreme overreaction of the immune system, and it's that that leads to death in most cases. But I'm not sure the distinction is desperately meaningful for our purposes as lay people. It's very relevant, probably, for finding treatment.
