all loved up

I help a few locals. I'm also a Mrs responder and have been helping those they send me to do so. And I already volunteered to cover support lines for a few charities anyway. And they are busier than ever

I'm continuing my voluntary work with a group of vulnerable people. This brings new challenges. It's hard, and we're taking on more than we should.

It's good to hear about how ordinary people are supporting those who need help. Perhaps an unexpected outcome from this ongoing tragedy will be a greater appreciation of the problems and needs of parts of society that are often overlooked, undervalued or just plain scapegoated by those with greater privilege.

I really hope so. I struggle to imagine the awful things going on behind closed doors for all sorts of groups at the moment. I feel so powerless, and it's tempting to just turn away. But that's my privilege in action.

I keep hearing some - generally more privileged - people saying "we're all in it together" and "the virus doesn't care who you are". Then almost using this as an excuse for not needing to do anything to help. "But we clap for the health service on a Thursday night" they say, "we show our appreciation". While complaining that they can't get a manicure at the moment, and it's so inconvenient that Cap-Ferrat had to be cancelled, and it's a shame that Pierre's in the village has had to close because it's such a darling bistro and very exclusive...

It is very, very jarring to see. The ultimate virtue signalling.

And yet I'm not sure how much more I personally can do. I feel massively guilty.
