81,611 tests completed yesterday, a rise of over 20,000 I think.

Tomorrow we find out if we reached 100,000, will it be reached?

If it reaches 99,999 will people complain, and shout about a government failure?

Also wonder if the tone of the media will change if they hit the target?

Testing actually jumped around 30,000 since the previous day only 18,000 away from hitting the 100,000 mark. Yet the BBC states "still a long way away from the target".

I was watching the BBC news before todays press briefing.

The news reader said to the Westminster reporter, only 51k tests yesterday they are going to have to pull a rabbit out of a hat to reach 100k. Next was the briefing and 81K tests carried out. News reader never mentioned 81K however to me it was like yeah a couple of ears, head and half of the bunny is out of that hat mate.!

The media only ever want bad news and they try to manipulate everything like ppe shortages , death rates , lock down, lifting lock down anything for a story as long as it's spreading doom and gloom.

Then they have the odd happy story and manipulate the person or people to boost their ratings.

Never trust a journalist.

Would much rather have a test that says you have had it than if you have got it now, if you show negative at the time of testing you might just catch it 5 mins later so seems quite pointless in a lot of cases and you just feel some people will just be asking for the kit so they have had one and not because they were showing symptoms

Still if people complain they fall short on the target for testing it’s a rest on the PPE bashing, well until something else comes along.

Well add 3 to today’s numbers as I’ve been tested as have two others in my household.

The army are spot on it was all very easy and relaxed.

I have however lost it!! I’m one for very much following rules and have stuck to guidelines to the letter.

This lead to my outrage last night/today with a local town councillor and his wife, who posted on a platform they had both been tested having booked tests online. My issue neither are key workers and neither showed symptoms, this makes a mockery of the system especially when appointments on the gov website in my area are so limited. We have a higher than average number of old folks homes here I asked them both ‘why are they more important than front line workers and myself by getting tested. This leaves no appointments for us. They didn’t like the comment and banned me from the page.

My point was the two places they took being tested used resources which could have tested two members of staff in a care home.

Surely care staff working with the elderly or a nurse who’s front line is far more important. Am I wrong???.

I am going to write a letter of complaint to the council as he called me an idiot and also stupid which I’m far from......I just think others needs are much greater

Yes. An antibody test looks for antigens in your body. Your body cleverly produces antigens once you've had the virus

If they have managed to get to even 90,000 today that will have been a decent effort no doubt.

However that does not excuse the length of time it took to get to this point nor the fiasco over PPE and their dithering in early part of this crisis which has played a part in where we are at current time.

They should just buy PPE from other countries. We are the only country in the world with covid. The other countries don't need PPE for themselves.

Or just get all the furloughed businesses here making it. All the car companies/ restaurants/ scouts groups/ vacuum makers who have offered to make PPE. It can be knocked up easily by anyone and doesn't need to meet specifications that prove it will protect front line staff.

Ethel can knit some masks and Bertie can make scrubs from shower curtains now B&Q is open again.

Stupid government for not taking up the offers.

The government do not order equipment for the NHS they supply the money. The NHS managers are the procurement sources. Have a look at NHS supply chain covid19, they said they had stockpiles of PPE but obviously did not take into account the 4 week pipeline ordering as that’s how long it takes a container to come from China, in early February they said they were checking all products that comes from China to make sure they continue to flow if not they would source from different countries, a little late considering all other countries were placing huge orders, this is a worldwide virus so of course there was going to be a shortage somewhere...he who hesitates. Maybe if we hadn’t stopped ordering from UK company’s and put most of our eggs in China’s basket we would have faired better but it’s not the governments fault the PPE ran short so can we play another tune.

I have approached to council via twi**** they are making excuses and stating everyone should follow guidelines on who can be tested and should book an appointment. Like I just pointed out he did not book and turned up which I think is dishonest and a way of creating a loophole for his own gain.

The government has changed the way it is counting the number of Covid-19 tests carried out, in order to hit 100,000 tests per day, the Health Service Journal reports.

Department of Health and Social Care is now including tests that have been delivered to people’s homes in its figures.

Because they haven't been tested? In order for them to be tested they have to checked in a laboratory. At best people have taken samples. A sample is not a test.

If this was the original definition of the test then by all means proceed. But the fact they had to change it in order to meet a self imposed target. Doesn't sound alarm bells for you?

Where is the complaint about the testing at home?

My complaint is about the change in the definition of said "test" so they can boost their own figures to meet their own self imposed target.

I have no issue with people being tested at home whatsoever especially since not everyone will be able to make to drive through testing sites.

The minute any target is introduced perverse behaviour is created. That’s why there are stories of people going for tests when they don’t qualify or need to and it wouldn’t surprise me if some were refusing to be tested who needed to in order that they don’t contribute to any figures. Targets also tend to lead to creative accounting, at which the Civil Service are long standing experts.

What Matt Hancock should have said is ‘we’ll do as many as we can’ but in reality this would never have been accepted. Now we’ve reached 100k, whether by hook or by crook, how about we just let them get on with it?

I bet you Handcock (or Handjob if you prefer) will tell us he had met his target of 100 000 tests. It helps when you do the counting yourself. It’s a bit like unions telling us that 2 million people attended a demonstration. It always depends on who does the counting...

I think the issue stems from the wording more than anything else. If he'd simply said we'd have the CAPACITY for 100K tests per day this milestone round his neck have been avoided. He could've layed the blame for not PROCESSING 100K tests per day elsewhere and not on the governments doorstep.

Have we not been letting them get on with it? I was unaware that scrutiny has caused inaction within the government.

"Do you know if they are counting the 'sent outs' as tested or the 'sent backs' as tested....... hmmmmmmmmm there is a point to be made ......

Find out someone...... is it the 'sent out's or the 'sent back's that get tested"

From the article that was posted:

"The Department of Health and Social Care is now including tests that have been posted or delivered to people’s homes in its figures. This means tests which are sent to people are counted before the recipient has provided and returned their sample to a laboratory.

HSJ understands that up to 50,000 of the tests that will be reported as having taken place on 30 April will actually represent the mailing or the agreeing to mail a home testing kit."

So if this information is correct then the new figures are counting any tests that have been sent out to homes, regardless of whether or not they have been returned, and around 50,000 of the reported number fall into this category.

I'd count that as not having been tested yet for quite a large proportion of the tests reported as "performed". So, yes, it's figure massaging to "fulfill" a promise.

On the other hand I'm not too worried about a day here and there on the practical front. The outcome is more or less the same unless either lots of people who were sent tests don't return them or there's actually a bottleneck at the labs which means that all those tests that are about to be returned can't be processed in a timely fashion.

The count now includes actual tests done, plus tests that were sent out on other days and someone said they'd do it and other tests not received too.

Plus a test a mate of someone known to a friend of the counter that he'd be reminded to do once hangover was cleared and he found his glasses.

He confirms there were 122,347 tests across the UK in the 24 hours up to 09:00 BST (08:00 GMT) on 1 May. However, this figure includes tests which have been posted to recipients, but not yet carried out.

Outstanding work by the government. But as we have seen some people can’t just say well done.

Add to the fact the Uk (backed by funding from the Uk government) are leading the world on finding a vaccine.

Well done to the Tory party.

O o O oo

I wonder if those tests that are included in the count but have not actually been tested yet will be added again when they are finally tested.

I always thought the count was from 5 o'clock to 5 o'clock for some reason, but now it seems to be 9 o'clock in the morning

However, they have got to nearly 80,000 tests so his goal nearly made it, lets hope they can keep it up now it is all set up

Any ramp up in testing is brilliant, but manipulating figures is just dishonest. If it includes tests that are just sent and not returned, it's just really dishonest. George Orwell must be spinning in his grave...

I'd of had more respect for them if they had said 'we were close and had a bloody good go, but we will get there in the next few days' rather than change the goal posts to make the target.

How the f did I walk through Heathrow without anyone asking me any questions or testing me. No advise to stay indoors for 2 weeks.

Nothing. Not a word.

Why are the airports not locked down. Seems pretty dumb to me, and they are confused to why hundreds are still dying every day.

Pathetic. Clap for doris. I hope he does have clap. Tw@t.

If they had said 80k tests I think most would have been ok with that

Regarding the ones sent out, I'm confused. Are they saying they do not get them back to their labs so it's the only way they can count them? Are home tests processed differently so they cannot keep tabs of them? Or is it just a swizz

"Wrong that he did...unless in one of the groups allowed and showing symptoms.

He would have had to book though as if you haven't you are turned away. So maybe he lied when applying/booking online..."

He did not book a test via the gov page, he turned up at the testing area. He also doesn’t fit into any of the categories the government have stated either. Here lies my issue he’s been dishonest who knows what lies he spun as when I asked the army lads testing they said keyworkers are priority. He is not a key worker.

From what I can see Public Health England have always provided daily testing figures for the previous 24hours up to 9am.

The sent out tests are only counted when they leave as this is the only point to count it accurately (when it’s returned it’s impossible to identify it as having been a sent out test)

This makes sense if they are counting tests performed (not to be mistaken with tests at labs being analysed and result obtained)

Can anybody help with this? I've seen an email that was sent to Tory party members regarding testing. The email had a link that took the person to the booking site. It's alleged these numbers were included in the 'tests completed'. Anybody know of it's true?

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not. I came from a different country. If I was infected, I could easily go down the shops and infect everyone. Most other countries won't let you in of you're not a citizen. Maybe this is exacerbating the situation. Surely the government should close the airports.

Notice the wording 'HSJ understands that up to 50,000 of the tests', 'understands', 'up to', meaning it's not verified information and up to could be anything from 0 to 50k.

They have gone from feck all to at least 80k tests a day in a month, can't some of you acknowledge that while there have been mistakes, we don't have to keep bringing them up, we could focus on the positives and try to support each other and our government in doing a job that nobody ever expected they would have to do. Please remember, none of them have ever dealt with a situation like this from a position of power, they are learning as they go, try having abit of empathy for what others are going through. They are also worried about family and friends.

Failing that, can we have a positive covid forum and a negative one? Then we can float around on clouds in our positive one and the negative people can wallow in their own private swamp of despair.

It’s amusing all that happens is everyone dismisses any ‘evidence’ against their beliefs. And all the ‘evidence’ is newspaper articles, that’s not evidence. I want to hear it from the person the press got it from. The press is a business and controversy creates cash.
