I was there in late March this year. They were coping admirably with the pandemic. All wearing masks. Sanitizing hands before paying in shops. Temperature taken before I could go in hotel. Some villages and towns refused me entry as I was a foreigner. A market asked me to leave. They shut down all the museums, temples and theatres the day I left. My son lives in Hanoi. He says lockdown is starting to be lifted. They have done amazingly well. 97 million people and no deaths

Given that Thailands figures are only 54 I would tend to believe the no death rate. Testing was better in Vietnam, but there is also the factor that Europe and the east coast of the usa got a far deadlier strain then most of asia

I think the figures speak for themselves, they tested more than any other country, the next closest to them was taiwan with 147.6 tests per confirmed case. Vietnam was also one of the first countries to recognise and respond to SARS as a new infectious disease with very high mortality rate.

Vietnam reacted quickly to Covid-19 and they had 3 key tactics: temperature screening and testing, targeted lockdowns and constant communication.

An Aussie professor said that even though you could question the governments openness it would be difficult to hide a large number of cases due to the internet and also the number of expats living there

I spoke with a friend in Nha Trang today and they are not aware of any cases or deaths

So it does seem they managed it well

When I flew home from Vietnam on 28 March there were British people on my plane who had been kept at Hanoi airport for 48 hours and not let into the country at all. Just sent straight back to Britain

The flight attendants were all wearing full Hazmat suits. At Heathrow we all got off the plane and got on the underground and trains with no checks at all. Such a different way of dealing with the pandemic.

It wasn't testing in Vietnam that protected people. It was locking down uninfected towns and preventing outsiders coming in. Their schools all shut in January.

As soon as the first two cases popped up they went into even more widespread tests and contract tracing than Kim Jong Un's neighbours, throwing lockdowns into the mix to boot which SK actually didn't have to do much of, just the one city upon early infections and that was only due to Patient 31 being far too sociable.

As well as this their population density is lower than SK which gives a huge advantage (in fact Vietnam's is one of those in density closest to the UK, which means a direct comparison is easier to make for how we "should" have handled it.)

I have friends in Thailand too. Tbh I have friends in many countries as I do alot of back packing and they are horrified when i tell them how uk dealing with Covid-19. I'm ashamed to tell them the stories of people having house parties etc

Indeed, in fact it's so impossible that right up till the peak of the virus here the government of the UK thought they might as well not bother even putting new arrivals in quarantine, blocking flights to the same degree or imposing any other real checks in any arrival whatsoever.

With this strategy yes, I'd agree it's absolutely impossible.

Oh and here's one advantage we DID have, aside from more notice. With the exception of Northern Ireland, aside from air and ferry travel we have ONE potential road or railway line into the UK to keep an eye on and that's the Channel Tunnel. Close that and that's the incoming virus from those two sources boxed off.

I'd wager there's a multitude of other countries who'd love THAT advantage from the start...

Another great example of Vietnam's control of the situation is when a man tested positive. He had been to gym one morning between 6.30 am and 8am so the authorities contacted everyone else who had been at the gym at the same time to tell them to isolate and take a test.

Ok just heard back from my friend who I met at Oxford University last year. He has returned to Vietnam pre covid and writes this, please bear in mind, English is his second language:

"The situation is well handled here. The government put preemptive measures in place long before the outbreak. It’s true there is no death. The government is really transparent and documents every case on national tv. I think vietnam succeeds because the gov acts decisively and the collective mentality makes everyone follow the orders without people complaining or defying. The west hasn't faced any epidemic in the last 100 years. Compared to the east which has gone through many in the past 20 years."

Thought I share a Vietnamese person point of view of the situation.

Oh and I've also been lucky enough to spend time in Vietnam. One of the most beautiful countries on the planet. Wonderful people too. Glad their coping well.

Vietnam is a lovely country and the people are wonderful.

However, it is a totalitarian communist state.

The latest Amnesty and Human Rights Watch reports make interesting reading.

The HRW report begins ‘Vietnam has done little to improve its appalling human rights record in 2019’

There is no free press, the tv is state controlled and the internet is strictly controlled and censored.

I notice in the (presumed email) message from the chap in Vietnam how many times they praised the government - probably because they are being monitored.

It may be they achieved this astounding covid result, but if they did it is because they are a repressive controlling state.

Whether our response has been well or badly managed, I’m glad I have the freedom and right to openly criticise.
