Central London last night

Sevenoaks

I am still working (key worker status), mainly from home but I do go out and have reported on closed dogging sites on other forums. Being noisy I have diverted on route to see the status of variuos car parks.

Last night I was in Central London, parking near Covent Garden and had to walk into Soho. Very grim.

I could not help but notice and vast increase in people sleeping rough, many coughing. Little or no cardboard for shelter. Pretty much every shop and business was closed and boarded up. It was 8 to 10 at night. Rubbish everywhere (quite a bit of s.h.i.t (human?)). Some of the homeless didn't look like the usual ones but more like new homeless since c19. Spoke to one who asked if I had any food. No but offered her money. She wanted food rather than money because there was no where to spend money. She said she had been a cleaner but her hostel had closed. I did not see any support, just police, homeless and a few people like me darting from one place to another (it was 8 to 10 at night). Stopped twice by police but showed them my pass, explained and they left me alone.

I think the deaths from C19 among the homeless will be the next big thing revealed by the press shortly

Just read the morning paper, big article on the new homeless, this is it people, this is how close you are to homelessness if you dont have people to turn to, and are living paycheck to paycheck.

Been talking to a friend who is a cleaner at the hotel they put the homeless in, she feels sick every day as she cleans the rooms they don't give a shit about being given a room. Now starting to put them back on the streets some are ok so they can stay, you can't help people who don't want help.

Can the charities and the outreach teams still go out to help?

I know that a piece on rough sleepers in Manchester on the beeb had some saying they would rather stay out than go into the temporary accommodation so it's always going to be an issue with this virus if some won't..

You do realise most of the people will have serious issues, thats how a lot of them ended up in the situation in the first place. Most will have serious mental health problems, and just have never had the help they needed.

This..

I know that some areas have their community mental health teams mostly working in housecor from home so wondered if this was the case with charities etc..

Have heard from a friend that a lot of the more vulnerable homeless are scared to stay in hotels with some more aggressive predatory homeless, always been a problem that a small number of homeless pray on the others exploiting them and stealing from them, guess that happens at every rung of society eh...

Check out the rocketing homeless figures after the bill for lockdown comes in. The financial impact of this will make credit crunch 2008 look like a day at the beach

We don’t know how other countries are reporting their deaths yet. Time will tell.

Dubai & Nottingham

Very sad. I was in Victoria just before lockdown, I was rushing for a train someone asked if I can help them I said no and walked on, just assumed another drug addict. My conscience got the better of me I went back , he said he needed a drink for him and his friend for the night , I took him into Boots, all he wanted was some bottled water. They had been working and lost jobs and accom at the same time and we’re sleeping rough and going to an agency first thing each morning to see if there was any work. Not everyone homeless is a drug addict, alcoholic or has mental health issues.

Re deaths outside hospitals, what don't you get about the difficulties getting the numbers of deaths in the community? In hospitals it's all computerised so they'll have software to collect the numbers on a daily basis.

There is probably a high percentage of homeless who have mental health issues, let's not judge eh?

This government is a total shambles playing on British people’s Dunkirk Spirit to hide the total lack of investment in the NHS and other services that matter due to 12 years of Austerity by consecutive Tory govts who spent more time bailing there banker friends and leaving all the working people to pay for the Banks collapsing through Greed ??

Their lives may be hell, but it's a known hell they've adapted to. The unknown is probably very frightening to them.

Every thread turns into this on here.

Pretty serious thread tbh. The amount of homeless will increase massively, universal credit is not good safety net, and a lot of people are lodgers, lodgers have very little rights, usually can be evicted very quickly, within a week, with no court order or anything, and the amount of lodgers in london is huge.

OP has not been back , but he did say these seem new homeless. So maybe these have slipped through the earlier drive to find them accommodation. Just a thought and it is sad.

It is..

As someone above said there are people who have lost their accommodation as, well as their jobs mostly in the hospitality sector and just been dumped on the streets..

The companies who have done so are a disgrace..
