Key worker?

I'm a little confused. I've just read an item on the BBC News site about a Natalie Orton-Rose who was "disgusted" that, after getting an appointment for a test at Nottingham, she was turned away because they had run out of tests.

My confusion? Well it says that Ms Orton-Rose is a property mamager at Poundstretcher and is, therefore, a key worker!

Tell me it's not just me!

I'm classed as a key worker but come in contact with very little people not going to try and get a test when there's other people that need it more than me

I'm a key worker and the text I got from my employers yesterday said testing was only available for those showing symptoms and to be honest it seems fucking ridiculous that if I had symptoms I should travel a 40 mile round trip to be tested. The cynic in me thought the government would benefit from an increased number of positive tests as percentage wise it will make the death rate look better

I don’t understand why she needed to be tested unless she is symptomatic or a member of her family is.

The test have run out because people are going for tests who don’t actually need them.

This is now where some who are front line will be missed and pass away.

It should be fazed testing nhs, care staff, those who are front line to the virus then anyone else in key work jobs.

I was astounded yesterday calling in my local spar on my way home from work the staff have facial ppe consisting of a mask and clear face mask. Yet myself who works with vulnerable children has no ppe what so ever, I understand shop workers come into contact with hundreds each day however they now have plastic screens, when I doing personal care have nothing.

My understanding and procedures received from my company following government advice only those who have symptoms or live in a house with those who have symptoms should register to be tested.

Southern England

Pound stretcher is open as they sell medicines, food and cleaning products, same a home bargins and b&m. So they are key workers, a property manager at p.s still has a role to play even tho she is not in the so called shop front.

I'm not. As I'm just a non professional carer and volunteer.. picking up patients and taking medication to people etc and sitting chatting to those that dont really understand this lockdown as they dont have the capacity.. oh and being the voice on the end of a call line for those not coping well

I’m classed as an essential worker according to the list of those who can get tested if showing symptoms.

There are effects caused by the pandemic that mean people need the services my work provides,

Anybody that's working is a "key" or "essential" worker otherwise .. well .. they wouldn't be working.

It doesn't automatically translate to "special" as some would like to think.

But they are kind of special as they are paying taxes for the rest to stay at home

That's not quite true. Anybody can go to work if they can't work from home and their business is not on the list of businesses that must close.

There is a list of key workers who are defined as people working in particular industries such as healthcare, postal, communications, finance, etc.

The government has said the run on tests is due to key workers asking for a test, test are for people showing signs of the virus not just because they are key workers. When that sinks in there be plenty more tests available.

Didn't that list just refer to retail businesses and others that are public facing such as gyms? Any business can still trade at the moment and anybody can still go to work, but if possible they should work from home.

Exactly, yet so so many people seem to struggle to grasp that concept and are constantly moaning that they are working when they ‘shouldn’t be’

Not necessarily, a number of people are still working but from home , not because their role is key or essential just because their company is able to facilitate home working

I imagine this person in the op’s post is home working, i think the tests should be prioritised first to people having to leave their home for work who are coming into close contact with others , but as was said on other threads that relies on the people who are technically key but realistically not as urgent up the list of requirements to be honest and less selfish

I work in finance but not a customer facing role and working entirely from home so no way i would count myself (or any of my coworkers even if they had symptoms) as a key working eligible for this first round of testing in front of people in much higher need

Aparrantly I should be working as one of those "COGS" in the machine

However I've currently decided not to add the risk

Central

As many people are asymptomatic, we need to be testing large multiples of what we are doing. We're abysmal compared to Germany.
