France first

Looks like France are adopting a France first policy when it comes to looking after their citizens during the pandemic.

Despite being urged by the EU not to block exports of drugs and medicines they have ignored this and have imposed a block on distributors exporting from France. This includes antibiotics, painkillers, sedatives and muscle relaxants, as well as several drugs being tested as possible treatments for COVID-19, including remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and ritonavir.

The curbs also apply to insulin, which is vital to millions of people with diabetes across Europe.

This is a block on exports to all countries outside of France

Every Government puts its own citizens first or tries too, you don’t get re-elected otherwise! Problem is during normal times these same governments fail to support domestic supply chains so we end up reliant on international supply chains that can be cut off overnight in a crisis!

The uk restricted exports on remdesivir, hydroxychloroquine, lopinavir and ritonavir. (anti virals) back in March?

Parallel exports , and only 3 drugs

The french export block appears to be on a much wider range including drugs which are not in short supply

The narrative isn’t about U.K. We have left the Eu.

Eu advised members not to block exports, so they could help each other/ move drugs to members that needed etc.

Despite further requests from Eu not to block, France has blocked exports . The short supply reference was pertinent as France are ok for stock on a wide range of drugs, so why block them as well, thereby preventing them being exported to other Eu members who may be running low or may need help.

France appear to be making a stand on their own contrary to the other Eu members and against the request of the Eu

Parallel exports:

Yeah medicines intended for the distribution in the uk which are then redirected to the Eu?

So i don't understand your point?

I.e the uk banned this first. Those

anti viral drugs are sars mers and ebola and maleria treatments. Everything China was using to treat the virus at the start of the outbreak

Expect further bans from the uk to come in as more and more drug supplies run low.

Lots of people need drug for other pre existing medical conditions outside of the virus.

And if you are wondering why the uk has so many medicines stock piled compared to the eu...Brexit.

Drug supplies where not only allows to hoard medicine prior to this there was a strategic plans in place to increase stock piles.

Yeah the government saw supply chains being fucked when the inevitable no deal or at least crap deal gets passed

But no genius in government thought... oh you China and India where these drugs are manufactured. Shit is hitting the fan there maybe we should order some along with basic ppe like face masks and gloves.

The Eu is putting in a bulk order in for these things and asking us to join in... What I shame the government left there out office email reply on.

Fuck nuggets all of them.

Well you could take in the eu procurement scheme.

You could factor in Germany's generous donation of the ventilators.

Without a doubt there has been lots of cooperation behind the scenes.

Giving 1 specific example is not a reason to damm the whole system.

So it seems that EU serves its purpose?

Who will tell EU countries to not stop exports to UK? No one.

At least if they try to stop exports to other EU countries measures can be taken and the situation can be fixed. If you are alone you have 0 chances of success in these situations.

France have said “non” to repeated requests to lift the block - so I guess the situation for the other Eu countries isn’t fixed . And France may be facing legal action ...

I don't think there is any EU country in immediate trouble at the moment regarding shortage of anything.

Many other EU countries the blocked exports lifted their bans after EU intervention. Also France is one of the worst hit countries at the moment.

We had a marvelous deal, not in Schengen, our own currency and nothing happened in the EU without our say so. The government's response to this virus is a preamble to the complete shambles we are gonna face going forward. Whatever happens, the diehards are so entrenched they will never admit they are wrong.

Italy and Spain have struggled as they were the first European countries to get hit by the virus. Belgium, France, Germany are all coping better than the UK due to an early and more stringent lockdown and considerably more testing .

Germany locked down the 22nd March. The day before the UK did. Germany have done better because they already had the testing facilities and the population actually do as they are asked.

Belgium, France, Germany are all coping better than the UK due to an early and more stringent lockdown and considerably more testing . you are only right about Germany which i never mentioned but france and belgium have higher death rates per million people in fact for a small population it is very much higher in belgium ."

Unfortunately we haven’t reached our peak, if we are judging success or failure purely on the number of deaths then we will have to wait 12 months before we can make a comparison

That is very true i was just dispelling the myth that other eu countries are doing better than the uk because they are in the eu.I totally agree with you and was listening to a guy on the radio who seemed to think that herd immunity will be the only way out of this and whatever countries do they will all have a similar outcome in the end.Its ok stopping it now in some countries but if enough people have not had it they will get hit hard again when the world reopens with a second wave.Think he has a programme on chanel four on sunday which should be interesting.

The only two ways out of this are drugs effective in treating the virus or herd immunity, the only way to achieve herd immunity is through an effective vaccine. There is no evidence yet to say that people who have had Covid 19 build up an effective immunity to it.

France has always went against the grain of the EU even thou they are a founding member. I think the EU will ether collapse in on its self or get much smaller after this is all said and done with Italy most likily to have its own brexit like vote. When it started it was a good idea but like with most things it gets ruined by a few people and also the EU have had some barmy ideas like the having the concept of all members forming a United States of Europe and having a European Army which wouldn't work as each army has there own ideals and way of doing things.

"When we've developed the vaccine do we reserve the first 65m doses for UK citizens or share it with the world to treat the more vulnerable cases. ?? "

Assuming we develop a vaccine then presumably the details will be shared with the world so everyone can manufacture it. What's your point?

Its just similiar to nato isnt it?

And just because an idea was floated doesn't mean its necessarily going to happen.

No one else will leave EU. Italy will receive billions of euro from EU. It would be crazy to leave. Especially after the brexit disaster.

I’ve no idea where this Brexiter fantasy of other countries leaving the EU comes from, support is at an all time high in most countries since they have seen the utter shambles we have made of Brexit.

Exactly, Germany have pledged extra billions to help the EU, they will be in a far stronger position after this pandemic than the UK.

The EU is using new and existing tools to make available the resources needed for a quick, strong and coordinated response to the coronavirus pandemic. The total sum that has been mobilized so far is €3.4trilion.

Plus one package over €1trilion.

Meanwhile here the test scheme crashes after a few hours and it emerges that a privately run testing centre incorrect results have been given out.

If it wasnt so serious..it would be almost comical how ineptly this has been handled

Did it crash or simply the amount of availability taken?

Not sure where your source for those figures are.As for the latest bailout its been agreed by the leaders but the shit will hit the fan once the commission has decided if its a loan or a grant which we should know by 6th may.

Probably because the whole country tried to log on at once, and i am sure in your line of work nobody who was ever completing a new task ever made a mistake ... why do people seem to think we should be experts at dealing with something we have never experienced before first time round ... there isnt a project in the world that launches without snagging and teethng issues that need to be ed out let alone something rushed through this quickly

I was specifically talking about the technology here hut the analogy is the same if you lay it a ross the whole pandemic

You realise a dry run is no better than a test simulation which again all projects go through before launch and still have those same launch issues i mentioned

The truth is you can predict/ plan/ prepare as much as you like but unless we have a crystal ball i don’t know about, none of it will ever have the nuances or the hindsight learning of the real thing and trying something and correcting and refining based on outcome or feedback is not failure, its a natural lifecycle, the same cycle the bloody virus went through to mutate to humans in the first place

What shit? It's just a tiny brexiters dream. Nothing like this will happen.

Italy's exit from the EU is unlikely for legal and financial reasons.

Conducting a referendum requires constitutional amendment. Changing the constitution requires a majority of both parliamentary chambers, which is unlikely to be achieved. So goodbay Italexit

"It's just similiar to NATO isn't it?"

Speaking of NATO; 2% of GDP on defence is going to be a real stretch from now on - especially for Spain and Italy.

If the UK still wants to do it, it'll be 2% of a significantly smaller GDP, for years to come.
