I feel you. I was in the queue for the supermarket and the person in front was walking a bit slow because they had a trolley. No problem. But the fucking whamen behind me seemed determined to walk at her own pace up into my ass. I gave her a death stare that seemed to solve it.

How about asking her to wait/give you space, politely? Just because we are having to live in this madness, it doesn't mean being rude is justifiable. Being on lockdown and not being able to see your loved ones or your friends is hard enough without others being rude. We are all in it together, why not try and make it a little bit easier on everyone?

Agreed, i think the problem is though, everyones anxiety levels are through the roof resulting in people over reacting ... both the person rushing round the shop trying to get out quicker not thinking about who they are bashing into and the person being bashed who flips

There will be the odd *hole just being their usual mannerless self, but most probably just need to take a breather calm down and think about how else they could approach the situation ... stressing about it all sure isnt making us any healthier

I also never understand why people post about it in forums. People aren't going to applaud poor behaviour, and the woman in question isn't going to see it.

That was my initial thought...I’ve see a fair few older confused people in the supermarkets not sure on what they are supposed to be doing with the queuing, social distancing etc. Maybe it would have been better to tell them politely first and then if they were just being ignorant and rude give it them both barrels!

That's ridiculous behaviour and you deserved a slap for speaking to someone like that who was just trying to go about her day.

The rules here in Germany are working well and it's all just common sense. People walk past each other in supermarket aisles etc but maintain distance mostly.

She didnt come into your space coughing or spitting at you, take a breath and be a little more tolerant.

Good god OP get a grip and a sense of normality about it all!!

Think about the poor people who work in retail to serve us all at this current hard time, I myself work in retail but we aren’t essential so are currently closed but I worry about our customers that we see on a daily basis and hope that they’re ok, so an older person stretched across you to pick up something that was essential to them, you don’t know that if she hadn’t got that item and taken it home to her potentially abusive partner what might have happened to her? Let’s not be selfish here and ‘be kind, stay home and stay safe’ where we can eh? Let’s not just think about ourselves but of others who quite frankly are struggling with it all, that older lady that you talk about might have been in the wrong but let’s face it there’s more to life right now than ripping someone’s head off when they might have bigger things to worry about?

I told a elderly lady I would break her legs last week ooooooo shoot me down!!

She had been rude to Tesco staff more than once, she hadn’t followed signs in store and moaned she had to walk every isle and only wanted 2 items. She then walked to the front of the que to pay and when staff directed her to the back she ended up moving behind me, she then moved her trolly so it hit the back of my legs. When I turned around almost expecting a sorry (stupidly) she moved forward and the trolly hit me again the wheel catching the back of my ankle. She then began to moan at me about walking up the isles and said I won’t be coming to Tesco if this carries on

So accidentally my mouth and brain hit a bump as I said ‘it’s ok love you won’t be able to walk up and down the isles again, because if you hit me with your trolly again I will break your fucking legs’

The guy on the till snorted laughing and the checkout manager had to walk away for laughing.

My point is......not all old people care or think how they affect others when out, we are scared so I totally get the OPs reaction

Hope you are proud of yourself!! Shouting 'F off' at an old woman, who maybe confused, scared and not fully understanding the situation. Maybe use this time to work on dealing with situations a little more assertively rather than full on aggression. One day you may pick on the wrong person and it will end very badly for you.

This horrible virus is having an effect on everyone of us , we can all get wrapped up in feelings and emotions of what is happening to US. Never forget that each and every one of us has a "story" and nobody knows if they are good or bad . My mum has later stage dementia and after I see her I sometimes act uncharacteristically, not intentionally but because my mind is somewhere else at that moment.

Everyone please be considerate at this awful time because you don't know how the next person is coping , some people are really struggling and it's not just about you .

We are all in this together,

Stay safe and look after each other.

While I do think it's an overreaction and could have been dealt with better, I too am becoming increasingly frustrated with people not even trying to follow social distancing in the supermarket despite the 101 signs. As a healthcare worker I'm trying so hard to stay 2m away from people, mostly for their own safety yet people seem to make it impossible. Most people aren't obeying the one way systems at all. There was even a couple on my last supermarket trip that I crossed in every single aisle going the wrong way! If they're going down every aisle anyway why not follow the signs!? I can understand more the frustration having to walk down an aisle you don't need in order to go back up an aisle you do but is an extra minute really so much to help keep people safe? At work we've been taking it in turns to do a joint lunch run and even when it's been my turn to do that and I'm in the shop in my disposable scrubs I've still had people almost pressed up against me at times. It's endlessly frustrating. I saw a picture lately of a man who had attached pool noodles to a hat to help keep people 2m away. I'm considering making one myself!

One of the mums at my kids school works in the pharmacy I go to and when I was picking up a prescription last week she stood right by me and tucked the tag into my dress and patted me on the back (which was bare because I have a low backed dress on)

It happened so fast it literally didn’t realise what was happening right away.

I still don’t understand why she felt it was okay to do that? Maybe because she knew me? But then again she knows me well enough to know my child type one diabetic and vulnerable

Very weird.

But how many times do people need to be told

I agree in this case swearing was appropriate. WHY DO PEOPLE BE SO SELFISH SOCIAL DIISTANCE NO EXCUSE

So the woman rude by not following social distance she should banned from shop.

Only excuse if the old lady had dementia

I take my elderly mother shopping, she often wanders off looking for items, it’s just an age thing some are suffering from memory loss and tend to forget what’s going on.

I can only imagine it was not intentional,

Shout and abusing an elderly person is just not right.

Was said lady coughing and sneezing all over the place.

I think you could have handled this situation a little bit more diplomatically.

It’s difficult at the best of times to observe the social distancing guidelines in supermarkets.

Totally! My Nan is in a care home, the stuff I’ve seen in there makes a pub brawl look tame!

I was verbally abused by an elderly lady walking ahead of me to the end of a queue! I’d slowed my pace down, walked behind her at a good distance but she turned on me in the most awful way when we got to the end, thinking i was going to jump the queue. Vile lady and attitude! But I still didn’t yell in her face as that would have made me look a c%#t in front of everyone else and why would I want to do that?

Bloody hell. Some people need to get a grip. It’s a virus. Just because someone is close to you doesn’t mean it’s going to leap across like a flea looking for a new host. It also doesn’t have legs to walk around your skin.

Keep washing your hands and not touching your face.

Working in a supermarket at the moment is very stressful for all the team .Yes we are constantly getting people who just don't get it and we have to be abruptly polite and directional .. 100s of times daily. Ive had people swear at me and generally be rude as i have asked them to follow the lay out . Wait for numbers to drop of customers to a safe level etc

When they pay we ask for card ..

And get a gob full when they refuse and want to pay cash.

Each time i support my team .

The elderly and unwell people we understand .

But the arrogant and selfish and dam right rude get told to behave..

And im seriously considering arriving on next shift as Mistress Tina complete with crop and whip ! Lol

The other week I queued over 40 minutes to get into Tescos then another 10 minutes to go up one of the one way aisles "all marked out in 2 meter boxes on the floor" because an old lady was taking her time to choose something while in the marked out box in front of me which was no issue at all, only for another person to come up the aisle once I managed to move forward, not queue in the box behind and just walk past me virtually brushing shoulders to get just in front of me.

I didn't swear at her but I let her know I'd waited 10 minutes to get to where I was and the lines on the floor are for social distancing and she'd just come tramming up without a care for anyone else.

It did piss me off but you can make your feelings known without verbally abusing people.

Back the fuck up ? Has this taken the place of 'excuse me' or 'can we keep social distance please?'

Like a few people i've witnessed you seem to think that social distancing gives you the right to use show your fear through verbal abuse to others.

I have nooooo idea why but I laughed so much at the honesty of this statement.

I think we need to respect that elderly people MAY be slower in thought and movement but other than that I prefer the company of people who don't treat the elderly like lost children.

I see it every day and im beginning to have it done to me.

In thought i'm ruder than the O.P. to people who patronise age. In deed I keep my self respect and soldier on ......

I'm still laughing.

That moment when you post something on a FAB forum and then immediately realise:

1) it was irrelevant and nobody cares

2) you’ve acted in a manner that goes against everything we teach our children

3) your behaviour was totally regrettable

4) you’re not man enough to apologise for it

I Hope you feel proud of yourself, for probably shattering that ladies confidence, at a time when what she needed was someone to literally out their arm around her. Have a think about what that means.

Had a similar experience but the other way round sort of?

Happily following the arrows making my way up and down the isles, gets to the garden sprays and stops to look for some ant stuff that is pet and wild life friendly they had none, so i went to move on, A lady had appeared in front of me already closer than 2 metres, i took one step forward still in a world of ant sprays and all i heard was a shriek of 2 METERS! I did calmly say you have stood in front of me and i need to go around you. You could of gone back and down the other isle or say excuse me, she replied? I could see she was a bit of a cat lady ( nothing wrong with that the mrs is a bit of a cat lady) so i just walked off and mumbled, why JHC there may of been a F in there too, all i heard in reply was Don't swear ! i didn't think i had?

Could have held up your hand and in a stern voice not shouting asking her to stop and respect social distance and wait for you to finish getting what you want then thank her for being understanding and patience.

"

This is why I won’t let my Dad go shopping as I’d be worried that this would happen to him , he just wouldn’t “get” the social distancing aspect.

People just forget I think, I’ve had it happen to me. I did say something but without the expletives. Some can’t even follow the arrows on the floor of the supermarket.

"How about asking her to wait/give you space, politely? Just because we are having to live in this madness, it doesn't mean being rude is justifiable. Being on lockdown and not being able to see your loved ones or your friends is hard enough without others being rude. We are all in it together, why not try and make it a little bit easier on everyone? "

"That moment when you post something on a FAB forum and then immediately realise:

1) it was irrelevant and nobody cares

2) you’ve acted in a manner that goes against everything we teach our children

3) your behaviour was totally regrettable

4) you’re not man enough to apologise for it

I Hope you feel proud of yourself, for probably shattering that ladies confidence, at a time when what she needed was someone to literally out their arm around her. Have a think about what that means.

Have a great life and try to do something or say something positive for someone today. "

4) you’re not man enough to apologise for it

You may want to take that back, they did apologise see above.

Thanks for highlighting this to me and great for him, but I actually meant apologise to the lady, not to the forum. Nevertheless consider it withdrawn.

And I probably should I have said “human enough”, rather than “man enough”, so as not to genderise.

I think if they’re showing contrition on here, they’re more than likely to apologise to the lady affected by their rudeness as well.

Agree totally with your other points though, about their initial reaction

Don't beat yourself up op, things happen.

Complete opposite last week tho. An NHS worker was rushing to get her lunch from Asda last week and came very close to me because I couldn't decide what I wanted, I actually said sorry as it was me holding her up. Noticed everyone let her go to the front of the self scan queue too. Difficult times but we need to carry on.

Fair play to you, OP.

These are tough times and we are all doing our best - sometimes we all fall a little short (just ask my children!).

Good day to you and stay safe - keep calm and carry on, as they say

So you are the male half of the couple are you ??

This makes it even more cowardly , any man that abuses a woman verbally or otherwise needs to have a long hard look at himself . Despicable bully comes to mind .

I think the OP realised they were out of line once they had time to reflect on it.

Being both classed as elderly and of late disabled I hopefully understand both sides here? Going back to before this current situation I remember deliberately avoiding the shops pre Xmas due to manic shoppers. The problem is if I get knocked over I'm incapable of getting up unassisted. And for some reason just before Xmas ladies become manic and I was worried about being knocked over by the panzer divisions of overloaded trolleys being driven around like they were invading Poland with no thought for others.

You've no idea how disconcerting this can be until you've been in this situation....

I'm so glad atm that my daughter is doing my shopping for me.

I'd go down and stay there under current circumstances?

I have read it all thoroughly and yes the guy apologised simply because he got hammered by the majority of posters on here . And quite rightly so .Maybe you didnt read the original post properly.

Bullying or verbally abusing a woman for whatever reason is totally unacceptable and I also agree that the lady in question should have been more considerate but nobody knows her "story" ( read my earlier post)

"Was in a big supermarket late tonight

Only about 12 people in there so empty

As I was picking up something a old women came hurting towards me to get something from where I was. Think the whole shop heard me shout f*** off you stupid woman the nearest shop assistant glared at her and the women glared at me daggers gggrrr Take a step back.

Why did you need to share this?

Yes, I guess you felt disturbed, and scared, and angry.

What made you imagine we needed to know about it?"

I don't think the OP was bragging about it as there's nothing to brag about in telling someone to "Fuck off."

I think it more the case that they were having a rant, in time-honoured fashion.

The original misdemeanor is all the more remarkable due to it being an old biddy carrying it out; aside from her being theoretically more at risk than the OP from the COVID the stereotype of old people taking all the time in the world to do things such as shop exists for a reason; it is normally the younger adults amongst us who see a grocery shop as "get in, shop rapid, get out and enjoy our precious free time".

It is possible that she may have been suffering from dementia or at the very least confused by this crazy world of today. It is also possible that she was just an uncaring thoughtless meff.

But whilst that doubt exists I'd certainly refrain from telling her to fuck off as it achieves nothing; if she's confused she won't know what she's being told to fuck off for, if she's just a meff then she's likely to pay it little heed.

What I would be inclined to do is use my trolley as a barrier if possible to repel any impulsive sorts steaming towards me; they can't walk through it! And alert the shop assistants of course, though it seems the OP actually did that.

Anyone abusing anyone verbally is wrong, regardless of gender.

Patent nonsense indeed. Sometimes it would be acceptable to verbally abuse someone. If the old lady had covid19 and the op got infected. Would that make you happy? I’m sure the people condemning op”s behaviour would welcome someone invading their personal space in the current situation. Old woman or not. Surely she could of waited a few seconds or asked if they could let her grab something?
