Trust Germany to recover quicker than us. It goes to show that our government's handling of this situation was too little too late.

Now after this Germany will be able to weather the coming recession better than the UK.

Our Government should have been on top of this. But we are just playing catch up pure and simple. I hope we do recover quickly though.

The government don’t appear to be trying. They said 100,000 tests a day by the end of April, but the current figure stands at barely 12,000 a day. Germany is way ahead of us and will certainly recover quicker.

As it takes up to two weeks for the symptoms to appear, common sense says that you need to have no new cases for two weeks and don't allow anyone into the country.

I'd rather be last in the race than die half way through it.

Story in The Guardian today that testers are being sent home early due to lack of samples to test. Germany also contacted suppliers well in advance to order stocks. This government moved way to slowly, had plenty of warning. They still can't tell us the truth about PPE and testing. This bodes well for Brexit....

I got ill once in Germany and I can say they have an efficiency that far exceeds anything we have. Admittedly that wasn’t coronavirus related and 10 years ago but I speak regularly to two German friends plus a Brit friend who lives there

Greece has done really well too- early lockdown etc- so only about 100 deaths in total in the whole country. I'm sure the Dyson ventilators will save us though, if they ever arrive. p.s. Germany gave UK some ventilators last week - thanks

There will be absolutely no consequences for the government though, purely because Boris got ill. That will be enough for most of the country to give him, and the rest of em, a free pass.

I was speaking to someone in Austria today and they went into lock down I think 4-6 weeks before the UK because they are neighbours of Italy.

They feel they are coming out of steadily and are quite confident but he did say they mostly followed rules.

Unfortunately we've a % who aren't and it's blatant, needs patrol cars or push bikes going around with heavy on the spot fines to groups ago aren't families and those still holding party's etc

Wouldn't mind if they were the ones to get ill but it won't be.

Capacity for testing is now up to 38000 a day. There's multiple testing centres available now for NHS staff to get tested....but hardly anyone turning up. The one at sixways in Worcester looked like a ghost town yesterday. Staff waiting to do tests standing around.

Maybe they need to be testing staff IN the hospitals but as they need to test symptomatic NHS staff they will be self-isolating so not in work.

Either way I still dont think they will get from 38000 to 100000 a day in two weeks!

Germany's success lies in their extensive testing. From the outset they have tried to identify each and every case. Hence they have a fair number of cases but a low mortality rate.

Only 50 tests done in Birmingham yesterday less today it's raining, open to care workers now but can't be bothered but let's blame the government for not testing.

Germany and South Korea were way way ahead of our government full stop.

South Korea implementent testing and tracking very early on including using it to ensure people coming into the country were GPS tracked to ensure they isolated for 14 days.

Some interesting reading -

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/apr/11/south-korea-beating-coronavirus-citizens-state-testing

Look at the way the dealt with an early rule breaker. They had app you had to download before coming back through the airport which ensured they could track your GPS location. A brit decided this didn't apply to him and ended up spreading the virus as he was positive before be arrested.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/brit-who-played-golf-after-21784821.amp

Other governments have handled things very differently to us.

They also took action when death rates were much lower than they were when the uk took action.

So the government let a plane full of people come into the country to work the fruit and veg fields because the uk subjects are to lazy to do the work.

Social distancing is only one part of the toolbox used, testing and contact tracing identified those that were asymptomatic and stopped them infecting others. In Wuhan, even though everyone under lockdown, there was daily checking of symptoms and temperature. At the first sign of symptoms people were removed to quarantine and further monitoring.

Think overall they have better health care and equipment. With their hospitals from what I've read they're run by appointed doctors and not pencil pushers like ours. With doctors running the entire hospital it cuts the time of treatment down considerably.

How other countries record deaths could lead to huge differences in death rates assigned to corvid19.

I'm not sure why people think the virus can be stopped, we can slow it down but spread it will, I really hope that Germany have done the impossible and stopped it but fear just as we are seeing in China numbers will rise again. Once 80 % plus of the citizens of most countries have had the virus we will see how many extra have died compared to normal.numbers in each country.

Testing and isolation I imagine, they will keeo a very watchful eye and have a phased reopening of the economy. I think the first step will be the reopening more shops.

But it wont be as it was, thats only to be expected

It’s a bit of a contradiction though isn’t it? You have symptoms and feel ill but you have to drive a long way (in some cases) for a test when you don’t feel well. Odd.

The other thing is that not everyone wants to be tested to get thrown back on the frontline.

And zero travel, it was British and Americans visitors that reintroduced it to Singapore. They had stopped flights from China but that wasn't enough. Business travel is over for now and so is leisure travel.

Proximity tracking seems to the idea for who where and when to test.

Germans in general follow government advice as well. You won’t get wankers standing on a bridge inches apart from eachother like we had last night. When they got told to stay home. 95% of them will have done. I spent a year living in Cologne.

In Germany they are finding any and every reason why someone may have died of something other than COVID rather than record it as a COVID death. Numbers are inevitably going to change once we can look back at the figures. There is no consistency across the world.

Victoria, London

I think it's down to mindset and attitude.

The German's are very bianary in their thinking, which is why they can't understand the British dithering for 3 years over Brexit. To them, ok you want to leave, then fooking do it, not half in, half out, and in the meantime sort your bill out.

The British are soft, complainting, spoilt idiots. Not prepared to work. Off the top of my head, we're possibly the only European country that doesn't have national service, one aircraft carrier that leaks, not enough navy to defend a small fishing fleet, no energy security, no food security, no data security. We expect the NHS to be free at the point of use, but not prepared to pay tax for it. We're possibly the lowest tax in Europe. As a nation, we've not taken the situation seriously, outraged we can't go out, yet there are countries around the world with real curbs on their freedom.

We live in a country where you can basically say what you want, go where you want, lots of cultural tolerance. Not like say south africa with prison like bars at the windows, razor wire, internal gates in case you get killed in your bed.

We can all quibble and critise the government, but this has been going on for years, it just highlights how vulnerable we are to disease, war, invasion etc.

We're not asked to fight, just sit on our sofa and guzzle food and alcohol. Bit boring but it's not going to hurt you.

Beyond the shadows.

I think they are far more efficient then us and many other countries. I think they didn’t procrastinate and had their tests ready to go by early to mid January, while many other countries were waiting on the science to decide if it was more or less deadlier than the flue or dismissing it as a hoax. They opted for a testing strategy from the get go rather than the heard immunity one so didn’t get caught up in the scramble for reagents later on.

"Germany's success lies in their extensive testing. From the outset they have tried to identify each and every case. Hence they have a fair number of cases but a low mortality rate.

How do you know this?

They have tested more?

What did they say at the beginning?test, test and test"

Not true

Test me

I dont have it today

Now what ???.

Do I stay indoors until no one else has it in the world

Are all we negatives segregated and where?

I suggest we ate being mislead with what testing does for us

Now if we have a fool proof antibody test that's different

But erm that relies upon infection not preventing

I'll re iterate its relatively simple to shut up shop and dramatically reduce cases

Then what because trust me testing unless done to everyone daily will not prevent a new wave x

It is very simple but loads seem to think it will simply go away. I really hope I'm wrong but similar numbers will die in Germany but maybe over an extended time.

The truth will only be clear after it's over and we see the difference in yearly deaths round the world country by country

"Trust Germany to recover quicker than us. It goes to show that our government's handling of this situation was too little too late.

Now after this Germany will be able to weather the coming recession better than the UK.

Our Government should have been on top of this. But we are just playing catch up pure and simple. I hope we do recover quickly though.

Didn't both countries go in to lockdown within 24 hours of each other? "

They mass tested and contact traced. Like Korea did.

Their secret to what exactly

A low number of infections and deaths

Early strict lockdown excellent medical care for infected less people in society with desperate health issues (that last one is a total guess feel free to ignore )

However unless the are aware of EVERY case in the country now then any easement in distancing lock down or hygiene will lead to the infectious mixing with the non infected

And as I say

I'm tested today and clear

I go into a shop

I'm infected how many more do I infect before I'm tested again ?

How do I name all in the shop who picked up the can of beans I did ?

I'm saying what I think will happen after

Not disagreeing Germany locked down better

Different countries are exploring different implementations of proximity testing using mobile phones. Simply put, your phone shows that you were in close proximity to someone that tested positive. Congratulations, you just won some self isolating and a test.

I have a question about this testing malarky. It's voluntary isn't it ? What if it's not a very nice procedure, a little bit invasive. Only NHS, care workers and hospital patients are encouraged to have them but if what the paper says is true there is ample capacity out there.

What if........ The lockdown is more successful than was hoped, The Nightingale Hospital currently has 19 patients. My question is If the pandemic is turning into a bit of a damp squib for the time being, surely this is the reason there is so little testing going on. There is no great need for it ???

IS the virus actually being squeezed too much by the lockdown ?

So indeed you say yourself current data means we do not know its air born transmission patterns

Thus an algorithm for an app based upon little or sketchy data ??

Second I'm an advocate of masks

However fully aware of the potential problems letting the general public lose with them they may end up being an equal causation as prevention

Complacency being potentially number one issue

Different countries are exploring different implementations of proximity testing using mobile phones. Simply put, your phone shows that you were in close proximity to someone that tested positive. Congratulations, you just won some self isolating and a test.

Ok we need to study the theory behind 6 degrees of separation

Cos trust me again

I'm infected this time

I go into Asda I pass 60 people in half hour

Then I go to work I meet 100 people

Each person I met within 2 days has met 60 others and that 60 another 60

Thus I go into hospital day 5

My phone record shows my 100

60 for every hundred 30 for every 60

Fuck that's a lot

Bear in mind your suggestion is that this is instead of lock down that I can travel to London

Or we stay on effective lock down

The mobile idea sounds lovely till the practicable maths is regarded

The 60 people you pass in an hour are not going to be infected by you, not unless you spoke to them all for 10+ minutes from an unsafe distance. But the person that sat behind you on the bus might.

Europe is still working what triggers ( ie how long do you have to be in the company of a positive ) they are going use to cause further steps to be taken.

Lets add in masks to the equation for the sake of argument, some of famous German civic responsibility.

You may not get to travel to london initially, and expect further disruption, thats a given.

We do not know

I'm infected they share the same air there was a air blower I coughed and touched things I cannot see how our app cannot include them

If it does not it WILL miss the ones I infected

I can go to London now

And you're suggesting this app and testing will give us greater freedoms?

Truth is we will Germany will the world will need to endure lockdown until vaccination or people become so intolerant they say fuck it let them die

I'm advocating strong liberty restrictions for about 18 months with vulnerable people isolated strongly

"

You're right. we don't know for sure but the thinking is to get the R value below 1 and keep it there. To do that will need rapid information and testing ability. Thats what taiwan did. Remember where I mentioned a mask and civic responsibility? You cover your mouth when you cough. Germany is no stranger to the precautionary principle: you assume its dangerous until you know otherwise, the UK operates in reverse of this. Its doable to daily disinfect public surfaces or use technology. Many asian countries are replacing things like lift buttons with light sensitive holograms. And yes the vaccine is the silver bullet but that could be years away. This is only the start of it.

"it helps when you have a former scientist at the top of your government and they listened to all the scientific advice they got and prepared for it... Who knew!!!!!

they say "testing, testing, testing!!!"... what the germans did is test everyone, especially the young, so they caught a lot of the people who would have been asymptomatic and got those people to isolate!

There was 14 people tested here yesterday, 13 positives."

and that is the other thing... the government put such a restriction on who can and cant get tested that they had to basically expand it today!!!

if your policy is basically "no symptoms, no test!" they you are never going to catch those that are asymptomatic, and those are the very people who are more likely to be spreading this!!!!

for example... look at the german press conference yesterday that merkle took and look at the way she describe what was happening and why people should stay in and follow the instructions...

she did it in such a simple way everyone could understand......

"I have a question about this testing malarky.

IS the virus actually being squeezed too much by the lockdown ?"

I agree with the sentiments that Germany caught it early and tested tested tested, but who is coming forward for testing. Are they made to do it ? We are told there is ample capacity in the UK. So why are we all not rushing to get a test done. Because in reality there is no point because I am in lockdown the chances of me having it are pretty slim. Having said that Mrs N does work in Grocery retail so I do have a chance of getting it but the social distancing does seem to be working.

Take HIV for example. Why isn't HIV testing mandatory ? Surely if everyone in the country, all 70 Million of us was tested in 1 great big go then surely it could be eradicated. Well that's an easy one isn't it. Why get tested for HIV if you've only got 1 partner. hey but some people lie about that don't they. There's not need to test everyone is there ? or is there ?

"Trust Germany to recover quicker than us. It goes to show that our government's handling of this situation was too little too late.

Now after this Germany will be able to weather the coming recession better than the UK.

Our Government should have been on top of this. But we are just playing catch up pure and simple. I hope we do recover quickly though. Do you believe there numbers if so how, they didn't do anything we are not doing. There boarders are still open and there lockdown was only 4 weeks, no PPE shortage loads of ventilators come on sounds to good to be true. "

There is no reason why not to believe them. I have big time problem believing the uk government though...

Let's face it , the government clearly failed . There is absolutely no reason or whatsoever to hide it. Numbers talking now...high death rate, no ppe, no clear comms from the government, no respect to the lockdown or social distancing etc ...historical fail. Money dont save lives.....

1. There is not ample capacity, they are still only testing people with symptoms which does virtually nothing to stop the spread since they've probably already infected 2.5 people when they take the test

2. Lockdown has a time limit on it so this is the best time to test everyone and quarantine people

3. Your HIV comparison doesn't work unless other countries do the same.

100,000 was an aspirational target, they will get nowhere close to it but it will be due to circumstances outside their control. Made for some good press for a few days though."

Equally you could respect the rights of others in a modern democracy to have a different opinion and be able to voice it..

They can voice it, but doing so shows their own hypocrisy. If you want 60% taxes and socialism, then sweden doesn't need a visa and you're free to live there. The reason they don't is that they want all the freebies without the tax burden. Why go through all the effort of making the UK like sweden when it's an easy jet ticket away.

actually the state pension is 175.60 per week.... which equates to just under £9150 per year....

obvious pensions are paid individually so a couple is getting twice that....

plus remember there are other pensions privately that may go on top of that....

the old state pension was made up of 2 bits... the basic and the additional...

the basic bit in todays money is now worth 135 pound... but the rest of it is made up of additional (which what what you have done during your lifetime) so a lot of people have ended up with either much larger pensions than the 175.6 new pension... or the basic 135 but the additional pension cont have gone to boost private pensions.... or a combo of both!

for the lowest pensions out there there is a minimum living level... which is this year set at 174... so for example if someone was getting less that than and had no savings for example, then the rest is made up of "pension credit".....

Various countries have there own ways to close down borders and isolation. Why the fuck do we “need” to go out into the parks beaches etc etc for exercise when anyone can actually exercise in isolation ..garden stairs living room etc etc etc. We should of been in total lockdown not allowed out for exercise. ..who’s to say that people could of been out “exercising “ for many hours ...

Because a percentage of the population are not as fortunate as we are in having a garden to do that?

If your in a high rise with one set of stairs which in the older blocks is the norm you can't be exercising on them when others might be using them as the lift had one person or a family in..

Flats etc will be similar although newer may have more than one protected stairway..

Suicide attempts, deterioration of mental health and domestic abuse have increased in this lockdown..

To fully take away the ability to exercise as per the guidelines will only see those spike even further..

Not an easy call by the government to get exactly spot on as opposed to limiting contact..

I cannot comment on statement 1 & 3.

COVID-19 however is a notifiable disease.

It will appear in the statistics whether the patient died with or because of the disease.

We also test post hum. This applies to patients in hospitals as well as in the community.

"Theyve bot tested as many people as you might think.

They are also reporting deaths differently

They are kings of propaganda and will always stretch the truth.

So total lockdown.

No hospitals or care homes open so the occupants all die from lack of care.

No food in the shops no food being produced do shortages for months and months, all the animals will die all crops will fail or produce far smaller yields

No electricity or water or sewage treatment, no fire brigade or ambulance services etc etc. Sorry but it's just not possible

You can exercise in isolation outdoors, also there's nothing to say you can't exercise outdoor for hours so I'm sure many do. I do.

"Unlike the rest of Europe and Asia we didn't lockdown fully.

Or to rephrase that, many people didn't obey the government instruction in UK and in other countries they did ?

UK compliance is pretty good and certainly not worse than Italy. I have absolutely no idea where this idea comes from the uk is some sort of free for all. "

That's not the impression I get from these forums or Facebook, but I put the question mark there deliberately.

Germany closed it's airports and ports straightaway.

Those who had just arrived were quarantined and tested.

Negative people were again quarantined for 14 days to make sure and sent on their way.

Positive people were treated and then quarantined again to make sure. Then sent on their way.

Effective measures taken at the right time helped Germany to recover. The UK were slow off the mark.

A town near you

Is it possible that the Germans are more obedient and disciplined especially when it comes to social distancing and lockdown rules.

Judging by the articles I've been reading and seen shared on social media many Brits are ignoring the advice given, attending parties and BBQ etc and mouthing off at the cops when approached

Well the death toll isn't going down for obvious reasons, but the daily death toll peaked April 10th at 980 and has been lower since.

No, they did 1.72m tests, we did 0.38m tests. That's the real difference.

Surprisingly no, at least from what I understand based on talking to some German friends. So one person in their 30s told me they had no symptoms and wouldn't be tested unless they did. A much older person told me that they had no symptoms but did get tested because they had an underlying health condition that made them an immunocompromised group. So it seems there was prioritisation of the testing in Germany. But I wouldn't hold them up as a gold standard model anyway, they still have 4,403 deaths which is hardly brilliant. Just one of the best results in Europe. Which is a bit like being a fast snail.

No, the problem is that testing people with symptoms does virtually nothing to reduce the spread since they've probably infected 2.5 people already. In Singapore they set themselves the target that within 2 hours of a positive test, they would trace everyone that person has contact with and bring them in for testing too. Vietnam were doing something similar. 11 deaths between them...

Indeed a shining example in Vietnam of how to do it if your country has 1 party state and highly disciplined population. Ho Chi Minh would be proud of their achievement. Would you be prepared to be put in a quarantine camp ???. It's their solution ??? I reckon over a million Brits were abroad on March 1st. I wonder how many Vietnamese were abroad on March 1st.

There are many examples of small countries doing it this way so it cannot be knocked. Portugal somehow has escaped the worst ravages so far but that's not due to locking down at all. So far Sweden too.

I'm not saying our way is great either. The thing is though we had completely different set of circumstances.

I wonder how many Germans were skiing in Bulgaria or Italy in early March. Did they perhaps stop at home and go to their own resorts in the Barvarian Alps. Who knows eh ???

Vietnam and South Korea are not small countries. Taiwan and South Korea are democracies. The UK actually has a number of advantages that could have been used to our advantage. We're an island for one. We have one of the lowest proportion of people living in high rise buildings, in europe. Oh and we're rich unlike Vietnam. There's no excuse for the situation we're in.

All along we have had a dilly dally attitude towards it, at first we were recommended to not go and socialise instead of it being enforced.

We have had a economy v health problem through out and as a result we will have the impact of it felt for longer.

The way we are going we will still be having problems with the virus while other countries are well and truly over it. I'm not sure what or how we could have done thing different

south korea had 15.35 million visitors in 2018, heathrow had 81 million passengers so halve that and its 40 million inbound just on its own.

Also remember the WHO said stopping international travel wasnt needed and when Trump stopped flights he was condemned by the eu

Trump denied the virus existed.

Its very easy to stop the virus, everyone and I mean everyone stays in their own house for six weeks,no exception for a single human being.

The trouble is the death toll would be for higher than the virus would kill on its own, thus we will have to learn to live with it

1. That's not true

2. A bad day for them is 300 deaths. For us it's 900 and they have the larger population.

Population density, family size and accommodation type all make a difference to how the virus spreads.

Re: the bullshit about trump and flights, he didn't stop flights from china, he stopped chinese nationals, americans could still travel from china and did so. His european flight ban initially excluded the UK and Ireland. The method and announcement of the ban caused the stock market to fall because it included trade and cargo. Horse and stable door is the relevant expression.

On Feb 24 WHO was saying that every warning light was flashing red and national governments had to act immediately and without hesitation.

"The government don’t appear to be trying. They said 100,000 tests a day by the end of April, but the current figure stands at barely 12,000 a day. Germany is way ahead of us and will certainly recover quicker. "

They also lie about the numbers , they count hundreds requested not delivered or mail mal-administered and if managed to be taken counted twice.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Matt Hancock even counts individual swabs
