Westminster Bridge Clapping

Saw a video of a huge crowd of people including police gathered closely together on Westminster Bridge, clapping for the NHS.... while clearly ignoring social distancing measures. Wtf are the police even doing???? They can hassle somebody sitting alone on a bench but Westminster Bridge is a corona free zone apparantly where everyone can gather together

If you stand well back and use a telephoto lens it does give the impression that people are closer.

My guess is thats what you're seeing.

They definitely weren't . The video is on twitter. I'll send you the link if you want, it's shocking. Police were there too.

Our local news showed about 15 police cars parked outside the hospital, blue lights flashing all the officers outside applauding. We thought that anyone who wants to commit a crime just needs to wait until 8pm next Thursday.

They've already had to break social distancing for their front line work.

2 minutes clapping on a bridge or outside a hospital is a small risk in their already potentially risky front line job.

Police or nurses.

Its not a small risk its an increased risk and an avoidable one at that.

I think the NHS will appreciate people obeying the social distancing suggestion more than the clapping.

This whole clapping thing just needs to stop now.

Just looking at the footage from all these hospitals with hundreds of staff all outside all bunched up clapping.

If hospitals are so busy and overflowing with coronavirus cases then whos inside looking after then?

Its only 2 mins outside clapping you say?

Wrong.

Its 10 mins walking from your ward to the entrance.

10 mins all getting into place ready.

10 mins walk back.

I have a nurse friend on facebook who is disgusted with all this.

Some of her colleagues dont even care for patients and moan about them mostly and just want to give them their drugs/meds.

No talking to the patients in a caring manner or giving them a bit of their time.

And yet they are loving all this being put up on pedastals as true heros despite them not giving a s... about their patients.

She also says that most hospitals have never been this quiet and nurses have never had it so easy.

She sees colleagues standing round talking for long periods or doing dance routines for tik tok vids and social media.

She says there is many real true heros who do love their jobs and do take the time to look after their patients properly and genuinely care.

Well these people dont want the applause,or put up on pedastals.

They just want a system where patients get the right care and the right funding.

During world war one England and German soldiers went out on to no man's land and played a football match which was far more dangerous than standing on a bridge or going out side a hospital to clap, some times people faced with huge amounts of fear and danger just need to do some thing to make them selves feel a little bit better even if there is abit of danger.

Apart from the social distancing i thought no uneccesary trips, police and fire going to hospitals to clap is uneccesary and no groups bigger than 2. ? I really do not understand how this is allowed. How can the police then go and tell off say 4 lads sat on park benches after they themselves have all been grouoed together

The last paragraph is interesting as it is totally at odds with a channel 4 news investigation on Wed this week where GP's are not putting covid on death certificates as it in their opinion slows down and complicates things..

Even if her concerns are legitimate, she is probably better off raising those concerns through official channels rather than social media, otherwise she may be accused of bringing her employer in to disrepute. There are far too many armchair experts who get riled up by this sort of thing and I don't think it's necessarily helpful for anyone.

I'm sure she wouldn't thank you for directly quoting her on a Fab public forum either

O o O oo

Having just seen it, it is either camera angles that don't show the distance between people or they were stood closer than the 2 metres. There looked like members of the public stood next to the police and firemen.

For me, the first clap was very poignant, a whole load of neighbours stood quietly clapping on your doorstep. I then saw on the News a few policeman practising social distancing outside the Royal in Liverpool clapping along too, which I thought was lovely, especially as they are on the frontline too. Now it seems to have turned into a party with either like Westminster bridge type gathering or people in streets playing drums, beeping horns etc.

Obviously before anyone tells me off , I am not saying people can't do what they want, I just think the message has been lost as to what the clap is for...for me it is still thinking of the people who are on the front line taking risks rather than how loud or big the gathering has to be

Yeah I've just seen the video too. Everyone stood on that bridge, emergency services included, is a moron.

As for telephoto lenses/optical illusions; It's taken on someone's phone who is stood on the bridge amongst the crowd.

I would prefer people to take to the task of making PPE for all frontline workers than clapping if I’m honest! Might keep a few more people alive!

That’s unfair. Just like the NHS they have had numbers and funding cut. They are doing a great job under difficult circumstances - and they have to deal with so much abuse.

I’ve sat and watched a lot of clips this morning outside hospitals where lots of staff are stood together clapping. The message is being lost I fear.

"During world war one England and German soldiers went out on to no man's land and played a football match which was far more dangerous than standing on a bridge or going out side a hospital to clap, some times people faced with huge amounts of fear and danger just need to do some thing to make them selves feel a little bit better even if there is abit of danger. "

The false equivalence of what you just said...Yeah it's called clapping on your doorstep like the majority of the british population is doing. It's not one rule for us, another for those on the bridge. You can boost morale etc by clapping on your doorstep. It's nothing less than stupid gathering together in huge groups on a bridge to clap for the NHS by violating the one thing that is helping the NHS cope. The police were complicit too. Following ur logic, should I meet the lads every week to make myself feel better even though there's some danger?? No.

"Apart from the social distancing i thought no uneccesary trips, police and fire going to hospitals to clap is uneccesary and no groups bigger than 2. ? I really do not understand how this is allowed. How can the police then go and tell off say 4 lads sat on park benches after they themselves have all been grouoed together because it for those few mins is important for public morale and mental well being. There was a lady on here last week asking the forums if it was ok for her sister to bring her niece over as it was the ladys birthday and they would be other end of the garden (10 meters away) and sit for 5 mins with slice of cake and wish her happy birthdays.

Everyone told her no, its not worth the risk and its risking others health.

Watching all these videos of gatherings on bridges or outside hospitals where social distancing is definitely not being applied makes a mockery of every single clip ive seen on social media where a guy is alone in the ocean getting arrested, woman sat on bench at park arrested, and a hundred other similar type of situation where people are social distancing but still getting in trouble.

Maybe this lady should have just waited till 8pm on a thursday to see her sister and niece to say happy birthday as it seems for a few mins on thursdays at 8pm the coronavirus takes a short break and everyones safe and dont need to stick to the rules.

The point of social distancing is not that it's okay for you to be out and about doing whatever you please as long as you're at a 2m+ distance. The point of it is that you're not out and about at all unless you're going to and from work, shopping for essentials (i.e. food, toiletries, prescription medications), exercising, or anything else that could be constituted as essential travel.

Going to visit your niece or sitting on a park bench do not fall under these categories and are not essential travel, so people are right to point that out. Just because a small minority of clapping seals on Westminster bridge don't understand that doesn't make it okay

"

In which case you might think with such concerns that a person could blow the whistle?

Even use her phone to record such things?

Or does her social conscious only go as far as moaning to a friend?

Here is her latest post she shared

"Uneventful shift again. Did speak to the bed manager in the smoke shed about the temporary mortuary’s asking if they were getting used got a sarcastic eye roll and an answer of no lol.

My friend who I worked with last night also works on palliative care in the community and confirmed community patients were having covid noted on their death certificates and had not been tested but showed symptoms ?? these are people who are already dying of terminal illnesses ??"

"

Interesting because temporary mortuary facilities are only being introduced once mortuaries are close to capacity and any additional body storage facilities have been exhausted.

"Saw a video of a huge crowd of people including police gathered closely together on Westminster Bridge, clapping for the NHS.... while clearly ignoring social distancing measures. Wtf are the police even doing???? They can hassle somebody sitting alone on a bench but Westminster Bridge is a corona free zone apparantly where everyone can gather together

“She says” a lot doesn’t “she” ?

Shes very passionate about her job and very vocal on her social media about whats going on.

Is that a problem?"

I think your subsequent post quoting a status doesn't show someone who is passionate about their job and if the quote is genuine she has a reckless disregard for the NHS' social media policies.

One thing I have seen all day on the news and online is criticism of the Police for standing close together. Whilst I understand fully that this is a breach of the current guidance people surely must understand that there are some occupations where it is physically impossible to be two metres apart.

I could be wrong but I think the public on the bridge were the result of a Facebook event.

The police have been meeting up for these sort of photo ops since the first Thursday night, I'd like to think it was an unfortunate coincidence. If it wasnt then it's an absolute disgrace.

The organisation of the amount of police , ambulance, fireman , police boats and a helicopter is just as bad as the public travelling there, standing close together, then travelling home again. Then all the NHS staff who stand outside the hospitals close together. I know all of them are not going to be able to always be a safe distance when working together but they could set an example for outside. Although looking at the public who are taking no notice anyway, there hardly seems any point

As I said on my first post, I think the sentiment has been lost and especially with this show.

All of them would face disciplinary action for gross misconduct in a public office.

She was on the bridge with them... I shit you not

The police keep talking about needed more staff. Crime statistics are at an all time low.

With all the extra officers and low crime...they should pulling old cases and solving crimes.

And if they don't want more of their existing workforce to be off self isolating... They shouldnt line up next to public with a sardine packed guard of honour

Those people were a disgrace. People need to stay indoors. There’s more cases of Covid19 in the UK than China and there’s people that think I won’t get the virus so I’m grand.

I honestly think that things will get worse for the NHS the way things are going because people are too stubborn to stay indoors.

We all want things to get back to normal but the minority need to cop on.
