It doesn't have to be "essential" work though

You are allowed to travel to/from/for work if you cannot work from home

If you are employed somewhere that is not deemed essential but is still operating you are still expected to attend work if you cannot carry out your role from home

He told them that he was going to work and the policeman replied..

"and I'm supposed to believe that"

They didn't fine him but they told him to go back home and stay in.

That doesn't make sense, I understand you can still work as long as you are social distancing

You can still go to work if your work is classed as essential and you can’t work from home.

I’m in that category so still travelling to work every day on public transport. I wish the buses were like this all the time, on time and only one or two people on them

What is essential work?

Various jobs are essential. I’m not saying on here what I do

It doesn't have to be "essential" work though

You are allowed to travel to/from/for work if you cannot work from home

If you are employed somewhere that is not deemed essential but is still operating you are still expected to attend work if you cannot carry out your role from home "

100%

Why is it that lots of people on the fab forums and social media seem to think you can only travel to work if it's an essential job that is 100% WRONG.

Anyone can travel to any type of job as long as the work can't be done from home!

I work for a council and I've been moved into an essential role atm but all of the departments are still working, those who can work from home are and those who can't have been issued with a letter to show police.

If your self employed draft a letter on letter headed paper stating the nature of your work, why you can't do it all from home. My mate has done this and has been pulled by police twice and each time showed his letter and was able to go on his way.

I'm afraid to go to work incase I get pulled over and messed around.

I was hoping the laws would relax a bit after 3 weeks.

What do you mean 'messed around '?

I heard police are stopping cars and handing out fines

But you are working, why would they fine you?

I do a lot of traveling with work and I havent always got paper work to prove where I'm going on the day.

So I'm guessing without that for proof they may send me back home.

If you can’t work from home then you have to go ‘out’ to go to work. So if you are going to work how can you be fined?

I think without proof they can. My friend was travelling to work when he was stopped by police and they asked him where he was going?

He told them that he was going to work and the policeman replied..

a village near Haywards Heath in East Sussex

I think in 3 weeks time the number and type of shops you can visit will be widened but with the same social distancing measures in place ( like diy and garden centres) but not eating out or pubs or clubs.

And that sounds reasonable

It's people making incorrect assumptions and then posting here and on social media their own interpretations as fact that's caused countless confusion, unnecessary pitch fork mobs, stress and even led to some folk not going to work when then should have and blaming employers incorrectly.

Please read the below link to familiarize yourself with what is and isn't allowed during the UK lockdown.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-52312560

For example it's ok to drive to a destination to go for a walk as long as the length of the walk is significantly longer than the car journey. On the BBC news yesterday they explained this as you can take a 30 minute drive out to the country to then enjoy a 2 hour walk with a sit down stop to eat lunch half way and on completion of the walk drive 30 mins home.
