Will face masks become compulsory in a public place?

The WHO (bunch of muppets admittedly ! ) are now pushing for countries to make it compulsory for people to wear face masks after restrictions begin to get lifted. Spain is handing out millions and other countries have even made it compulsory. It appears that wearing some type of mask (surgical, folded cloth etc) may not give you much extra protection, however it does appear that it's harder to transmit the disease if you wear one. Thoughts?

It looks like it could become the norm until after vaccine (big if) . Thoughts?

As I understand it (and no expert, just an interested observer like most of us), masks help prevent anyone with an infection (known or unknown) passing it on to others, so there is some sense it people wearing them as restrictions are lifted, in case anyone has the virus but doesn't know.

But a mask won't stop you getting infected if you have the virus on your hands and later touch your face - hence the importance of hand washing, always!

Some professional bod was talking about it on R4 earlier. Obviously not just them but Gave the example of hairdressers as a profession which comes into contact with others when wearing face masks will be the norm for years to come.

They also talked of the phone app where if someone gets tested + everyone they've come into contact with gets a message. Working well in Singapore apparently.

As a regular user of breathing apparatus and face masks in my job i think most people do not understand how they work.

Unless its an adjustable tight fit it will not seal airtight to the face. So if you have a beard for example its very hard to get an airtight seal.

Regular use of one mask will result in that mask gradually blocking up with the result that as your breathing your sucking in and expelling round the untight edges.

Masks will not stop eye contact with the virus, even a visor will not stop it getting round the edges.

Masks and visors cut down the the exposure risk but do not completely prevent it.

You could always lug around a three stage filter air fed system powered by a compressor but going to need a long extension lead.

I agree. Also when you are wearing a facemask it helps you to remember to not unmindfully put your fingers near your nose or mouth. Just the fact that you are wearing it may make a difference in that way.

You said this before but they are not talking about fully sealed breathing aperatus.

Its about reducing the the risk of spreading or contracting the virus.

Washing hands, distancing, and covering you airways won't stop the virus but it will slow it down.

And these are the cheapest and easiest way to do it.

You are partly correct. A surgical type mask will help to stop the spread by wearing it. And it's what I think any exit plan will need.

But a FFP3 mask will(if fitted correctly) stop you inhaling it...but you also need eye protection too.

the WHO position has always been that the recommendation is you don't to wear a mask is you are fit and healthy... which is technically correct...

the problem is because you can carry his asymptomatically without testing you have no true way to confirm whether you have it, have had it, or never had it at all....

Sorry I was looking for the information. This source is dated jan 24th direct from WHO. Even following human to human transmittion they didnt seem to think restriction of travel was required.

https://www.who.int/news-room/articles-detail/updated-who-advice-for-international-traffic-in-relation-to-the-outbreak-of-the-novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-24-jan

Theres one dated 14 days earlier where they also said similar yet there was not much human to human transmission then. Within 14 days there was but they didnt seem to think restriction of travel was required.

Governments are telling people to wear masks not because they work but people feel safer, and move about more. It's keeps folk happy so it works. It's like they told people to eat carrots so they could see better in the black out, truth was we could grow plenty of carrots but it worked.

If everyone is not breathing viruses out or touching your mouth as you cough or sneeze... Then no need for eye or hand protection in public assuming everyone's mouth covered... As for asia already wearing masks. Not everyone wears masks and all the time in public places. Usually people wear it for commuting or working in public sectors like bus driver or in supermarket and mainly because of air pollution. It's a clustered community contamination so if you're infected, who ever you live or work with in the same building is more likely to be infected. Conmon sense and understanding how virus spreads is better than scare mongering

A respirator that is good for NBC purposes.

For anyone with underlying conditions (especially people who are now shielded) I would recommend the FFP2 of FFP3 mask as the reduce the risk of being infected.

But they are quite expensive to buy now as a quick look on ebay is showing them at over a £100 for a box of 10.

The surgical face masks which will help stopping the spread from you when wearing it... and the most likely one to be put forward on a exit plan are around a £1 each on ebay.

But both of these masks were only 10% of the price pre COVID-19.

Like when they said there's no evidence of human to human transmission in January and no need for travel bans, yeah great advice. I'm all for face masks, the real reason we haven't done this is because the government is shit scared the NHS will run out, not because they don't work.

If I am coughing, sneezing and slavering like a bloodhound, I will not be going outside.

If I’m not coughing and sneezing I see no need to wear one.

what about allergies or those that have asthma?

You may also not know you have it. So what would it hurt to wear one.

What would a person with allergies or asthma normally do? - they wouldn’t randomly cough, sneeze and splatter slaver everywhere without doing something considerate to protect those around them ?

If I have it and I’m not showing symptoms then I’m not coughing, sneezing and spewing slaver everywhere . Im also washing my hands and not touching my face .

Consett

I work for a company that produces mask-respirators...not mentioning names as I don’t want questions about the companies logistics.

Their are different types of Masks,

FFp3 respirators/mask stops the user from getting infected, however they need to be fit tested for size, to ensure the seal fits correctly.

A surgical masks-the ones that loop around your ears etc are to stop a person from spreading the disease, the material needs to woven thinly to ensure no vapor escapes etc, this is why under pants and these Chinese masks don’t work. The same as these 1 man band companies springing up, they need to made in a certain way... your wasting your money as I assume people are wearing to protect themselves, which they can’t function that way.

However if you have a facial hair of any length you need a hooded head piece as you can’t get a seal over facial hair. These are expensive. The above two will not work.

How are they going to make people have a fit test, this is time consuming and expensive and their is not enough people with the correct training to offer this? It’s done with certain test equipment with consumables called bitter/sweat these cost money.

However the other problem again is people with Facial hair, they need to have hooded mask, unless they make people shave every day, which people won’t, you need hooded equipment.

There’s to many logistics to make this mandatory, it’s not as cut and dry as people think.

"As a regular user of breathing apparatus and face masks in my job i think most people do not understand how they work.

You could always lug around a three stage filter air fed system powered by a compressor but going to need a long extension lead."

A diving helmet might work

"Couldn't find anything about this in the media.

Do you have any links? It was on Sky news it is stupid, there are not enough face masks of the right quality available, also a security risk and very unhealthy

The virus is unhealthy and things that stop the spread of it is good "

They need to be washed all the time and also people can get careless thinking masks keep them safe

North West

We will all be using face masks in the midterm until a vaccine is found.

Sadly we have to change our mindset from:

I need to do everything I can to avoid getting infected and fuck everyone else....

To

I might be infected and I need to do everything I can to stop myself infecting others.

When we think about protecting other people instead of ourselves, the wearing of masks becomes an obvious move.
