"Couldn't find anything about this in the media. Do you have any links?" Some professional bod was talking about it on R4 earlier. Obviously not just them but Gave the example of hairdressers as a profession which comes into contact with others when wearing face masks will be the norm for years to come. They also talked of the phone app where if someone gets tested + everyone they've come into contact with gets a message. Working well in Singapore apparently.

"As I understand it (and no expert, just an interested observer like most of us), masks help prevent anyone with an infection (known or unknown) passing it on to others, so there is some sense it people wearing them as restrictions are lifted, in case anyone has the virus but doesn't know. But a mask won't stop you getting infected if you have the virus on your hands and later touch your face - hence the importance of hand washing, always! " I agree. Also when you are wearing a facemask it helps you to remember to not unmindfully put your fingers near your nose or mouth. Just the fact that you are wearing it may make a difference in that way.

"As a regular user of breathing apparatus and face masks in my job i think most people do not understand how they work. Unless its an adjustable tight fit it will not seal airtight to the face. So if you have a beard for example its very hard to get an airtight seal. Regular use of one mask will result in that mask gradually blocking up with the result that as your breathing your sucking in and expelling round the untight edges. Masks will not stop eye contact with the virus, even a visor will not stop it getting round the edges. Masks and visors cut down the the exposure risk but do not completely prevent it. You could always lug around a three stage filter air fed system powered by a compressor but going to need a long extension lead." You said this before but they are not talking about fully sealed breathing aperatus. Its about reducing the the risk of spreading or contracting the virus. Washing hands, distancing, and covering you airways won't stop the virus but it will slow it down. And these are the cheapest and easiest way to do it.

A surgical type mask will help to stop the spread by wearing it. And it's what I think any exit plan will need. But a FFP3 mask will(if fitted correctly) stop you inhaling it...but you also need eye protection too.

"I don't think they will become compulsory and one of the reasons is because I don't think there's enough of them for people to get hold of and the NHS needs to take priority." You can get hold of the surgical masks quite easily...that's the one they are talking about to stop transmission

"The WHO (bunch of muppets admittedly ! ) are now pushing for countries to make it compulsory for people to wear face masks after restrictions begin to get lifted. Spain is handing out millions and other countries have even made it compulsory. It appears that wearing some type of mask (surgical, folded cloth etc) may not give you much extra protection, however it does appear that it's harder to transmit the disease if you wear one. Thoughts? It looks like it could become the norm until after vaccine (big if) . Thoughts? " Why are they a bunch of muppets at the WHO? Face masks are to protect others from you.

Even following human to human transmittion they didnt seem to think restriction of travel was required. https://www.who.int/news-room/articles-detail/updated-who-advice-for-international-traffic-in-relation-to-the-outbreak-of-the-novel-coronavirus-2019-ncov-24-jan Theres one dated 14 days earlier where they also said similar yet there was not much human to human transmission then. Within 14 days there was but they didnt seem to think restriction of travel was required.

"Masks should be worn by everyone is to protect everyone. People need to do their research more and listen to expert advice instead of getting caught up on what type of mask to wear etc if uk are right that wearing masks is unhelpful, then the rest of the world must be doing it wrong... " Wearing a mask make you feel safer, or a full face mask is needed good luck buy enough of them for everyone.

What I'm gathering here is that a respirator is the best protection, as they cover your whole face? A respirator that is good for NBC purposes.

" For anyone with underlying conditions (especially people who are now shielded) I would recommend the FFP2 of FFP3 mask as the reduce the risk of being infected. But they are quite expensive to buy now as a quick look on ebay is showing them at over a £100 for a box of 10. The surgical face masks which will help stopping the spread from you when wearing it... and the most likely one to be put forward on a exit plan are around a £1 each on ebay. But both of these masks were only 10% of the price pre COVID-19.

Like when they said there's no evidence of human to human transmission in January and no need for travel bans, yeah great advice. I'm all for face masks, the real reason we haven't done this is because the government is shit scared the NHS will run out, not because they don't work.
