For the people with diesel cars, make sure you take it for a good 30+ mins drive once a week if you are only using it for short journeys just to go to the local shops because the diesel particulate filter can't regenerate itself unless it reaches around 600c,and it costs a lot of money to replace them if they get completely blocked

Top tip that

I recently switched to a diesel and had a vague recollection about having to do something but couldn't remember what it was...

Can you leave it running my commute is only 20 mins in my Chelsea tractor. I could leave it running on my drive without keys and see if it kicks in?

Yeah I changed back to petrol about 3 years ago. The regens were doing my head in. One time was on way to work but had to make a detour on way to regen. Ended up being 15 miles before it was done

So 15 miles back again

Think you'll find it needs to be at around 2000 revs to get it hot enough. The trips I usually do have kept mine in good order so far, and only using the car now 1x per week for essential shopping, but should still be ok, given the distance to the shop.

Erm don’t think we’re allowed to travel for 30 mins unless going to work so looks like a lot will have an extra bill

Drive it in 2nd or third gear @ 3000 rpm for about 1 mile it forces it to regen itself

I've been worrying about that and the battery. My diesel hasn't moved in a week.

Thanks for the info

I very much doubt if the restrictions are adhered to EGT will be substantial enough to burn off the excess carbon.

Even hard driving may not remove the carbon build up.

If you take your car to a garage they may be able to perform a forced re-gen by disabling the valve solenoid.

Just remember all that carbon is being circulated through your engine and filtered through the engine oil. This will wear the internal components alot quicker so oil changes are a must when reaching the specified hours or miles.

You can blank them but I would doubt it would pass the emmisions test at MOT time.

Ok. Looks like the long way home on the odd day. Cheers.

Dunno what year your car is but I used to own a Mondeo st tdci(2005). It didn't have a dpf but the egr needed regular clean outs. Was a simple enough job to remove and get the soot out of it.

Always wanted one of them in the blue colour. My mate bought one before I did and burst my bubble.

If I could ever find a low milage 306 Diesel Turbo I would have it in a heart beat. My one lasted about 8 years and I put over 200,000 miles on it.

To be honest I only run it in veg oil in warm weather. Which is handy, since the MOT is due in August. The emission limit is 1.5/m, last year it tested at 0.22/m.

Thats pretty good. But if you keep the fuel clean and service regularly you shouldn't have issues.

I like the idea of the DGB units however the size of the tanks required kind of defeat the purpose of having a duel system.

Veg oil is too thick in winter. In spring and autumn I run a 50/50 veg oil diesel mix, in summer I run 100% veg (sunflower) oil. Still a big saving on fuel cost, well it was until the lockdown and the price of fuel dropping...

That's what I had. Performance blue. Still my favourite car I've owned. Broke my heart when it was time to change. The diamond cut wheels were an absolute bitch though

Dead right. It's a fairly recent issue - never used to have any such problems with our vans at work, but in recent years this, and fucking Adblue, have been real pains in the arse.

I thought that the other day - there’s going to fucked DPFs all over the shop as a result of this. Mine is a diesel but I deliberately went for one that’s a year older than the ones with DPFs.

Just took my 2012 diesel Renault out for a quick blast up the motorway, one junction and back before going to the supermarket. The first time in nearly 3 weeks that it had moved due to us being isolated (symptoms of Covid-19). It started first time, no issues apparent at all.....
