New York has started burying covid-19 victims in mass graves.

I feel for the families and friends loved ones,I'm sure this isn't what they wanted for them.

Like war time isn't it.

Directly from the Mayor's office:

For decades, Hart Island has been used to lay to rest decedents who have not been claimed by family members. We will continue using the island in that fashion during this crisis and it is likely that people who have passed away from COVID who fit this description will be buried on the Island in the coming days

No they would have been buried there. That is the point. The bodies are being buried there if they haven't been claimed within 2 weeks.

Yes they did in the article. Usually prisoners dig the graves but because of the numbers they have had to bring in a private company. Usually 24 bodies a week are buried there but the article hints at 125 a week.

Its misleading lazy journalism intended to draw links between 2 separate facts. Harts Island has been a city funded cemetery for nigh 160 years and mass graves are nothing new there. Bluntly put, its where they bury the bodies that are unclaimed. Americans will generally refer to these burial grounds as the potters field.

I'm not alarmed. The article didn't say a number they are doing now but said normally they did 1 X 24 bodies mass grave per week pre the virus. Now having to do 5 mass burials a week. Hence I hinted at 5 times that amount (I know 5 X 24 = 120 btw).

I was just saying to my sister earlier how sad so many being given a pauper's burial as no family to claim them.

BBC news has changed the headline at least three times during the day about this. Starting with the alarmist New York buries dead in mass graves, to a slightly more measured article (although still scary) about 24 unclaimed bodies being buried a day, rather than 25 a week. Very scary, but the initial headlines were very inappropriate in my opinion

A regular thing or not, 25 a day or a week. Still depressing when their deaths could have been avoided. Maybe 1 of the 25 could have had alot to live for and contribute at least.

Too easily dismissed as a statistic in some circles.
